Z Into the Deep Issue 211 Newsletter of orthodox Catholics of Gippsland December 2020 Shout For Joy Pope Francis, Angelus Address, Gaudete Sunday 2018 In this third Sunday of Advent the liturgy invites us to joy – listen carefully: to joy. The prophet Zephaniah turns to the small portion of the people of Israel with these words: “Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout; O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughte r of Jerusalem!” (3:14). Shout with joy, exult, rejoice: this is this Sunday’s invitation. … This appeal of the prophet is particularly appropriate in the time in which we prepare for Christmas, because it’s applied to Jesus, the Emmanuel, the God-with-us: His presence is the source of joy. … The words addressed to the Virgin by the Angel Gabriel are as an echo of those of the prophet. What does the Archangel Gabriel say? “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you” (Lk 1:28). “Rejoice,” he says to Our Lady. In a remote village of Galilee, in the heart of a young woman unknown to the world, God ignites the spark of happiness for the whole world. … Saint Paul also exhorts us today not to be anxious, not to despair about anything, but in every circumstance, to let our requests, our needs and our worries made known to God “by prayer and supplication” (Phil 4:6). The awareness that we can always turn to the Lord in our difficulties, and that He never rejects our invocations, is a great reason for joy.

July 31, 2020 Adrienne Sandoval Director New Mexico Oil Conservation Division 1220 South St. Francis Dr. Santa Fe, NM 87505 [email protected] [email protected] Re: Put the Brakes on Proposed “Produced Water” Regulations, Case No. 21821 Dear Director Sandoval: Enclosed, please find the names of thousands of people who join in calling on the New Mexico Oil Conservation Division to pause plans to adopt new rules regarding the oil and gas industry’s “produced water” and to put public health, safety, and environmental protection first. Thank you. Sincerely, Jeremy Nichols Climate and Energy Program Director WildEarth Guardians July 31, 2020 Re: Put New Mexico's Clean Water, Health, and Environment First Dear New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission: The undersigned urge you to put the brakes on your proposal to amend regulations regarding the use of "produced water" in New Mexico. To begin with, the term "produced water" is misleading. You are proposing to regulate the oil and gas industry's toxic liquid waste. This is not water, it is a dangerous substance. The proposed regulations are dangerously vague and unenforceable. The rules claim to protect public health and the environment, yet there are no standards, no criteria, no thresholds for ensuring health, safety, and the environment are actually protected. Given that this fluid is too toxic to treat, it is impossible to understand how its use could ever be safe or healthy. Also concerning is that there is no strict definition of "produced water" that would ensure the oil and gas industry does not inappropriately classify this toxic fluid as safe or even drinkable.

  • Joan Roig I Diggle (1917-1936) Piarist Alumnus Dies As a Martyr
Joan Roig i Diggle (1917-1936) Piarist Alumnus Dies as a Martyr Pope Francis authorized the Congregation of the Causes of Saints to promulgate the Decree of the Martyrdom of the Servant of God, Joan Roig i Diggle, on October 2, 2019. Fathers József Ruppert, Mateusz Pindelski and Andrés Valencia Henao, who have recently served as Postulators General for the Piarist Fathers, have worked on his cause for martyrdom at the request of the Association of the Friends of Joan Roig i Diggle (Associació d’Amics de Joan Roig i Diggle). Joan studied at the Piarist School of Our Lady (Escola Pia Nostra Senyora) in Barcelona, Spain between the ages of 10 and 17 years from 1927 to 1934. He stood out for his respectfulness and dedication in his studies. He was a very close friend of two Piarist Fathers, Francisco Carceller Galindo and Ignasi Casanovas Perramon. Both were killed in 1936 and beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 1995. Joan was born in Barcelona on May 12, 1917. He began his studies with the Christian Brothers. For high school, he entered the school of the Piarist Fathers. His family had serious economic problems. Therefore, they moved to the nearby town of Masnou. He began working to help his family, first in a tissue warehouse and then in a factory in Barcelona. While working, he also continued his studies with the hope of eventually becoming a lawyer. While in Masnou, he actively participated with the Federation of Young Christians of Catalonia. During the war, a priest secretly entrusted the care of the Eucharistic to him.
