  • Women Saints in Gaudiya Vaishnavism
Women Saints in Gaudiya Vaishnavism - Jagadananda Das - There are few traditional societies in which women have played a dominant historical role. In this respect, Gaudiya Vaishnavism is no different. The egalitarianism of bhakti movements, which stress the universality of devotion and deny any disqualifications based on birth, sex, or caste, seems to have had limited real effects on the actual social circumstances of any of these classes of people. There are some, including the eminent Bengali historian, Ramakanta Chakravarti, who feel that the status of women was improved in Chaitanya Vaishnavism, mainly due to the singular example of Jahnava Devi. (1) Indeed, it does appear that literacy rates among women (and men) in Vaishnava castes in Bengal were somewhat higher than in other, comparable groups, but this evidence is far from overwhelming. Today, some women may be found playing the role of guru, especially ministering to other women, and there are some Chaitanya Vaishnava women who sing padavali kirtan or give discourses on Vaishnava texts. On the whole, however, despite their dominant numbers at most religious events, the role of women continues to be a supporting one and subordinate to that of men. One question that needs analysis is whether the importance of Radha in the Vaishnava pantheon and the general weight given to the female principle and feminine virtues in the Gaudiya Vaishnava culture has had any influence on the status of women. Many feminist analysts have pointed out that the worship of goddesses has no proven relation to any such amelioration in societies where such worship is conducted.

His Holiness has taught us how to love and engage oneself completely in the service of Sri Gaurasundara. An intimate associate of the Lord, he relentlessly executes his great services, not caring a bit for his advanced age or his difficult physical condition. His exemplary mood and instructions have been instrumental in us sustaining our spiritual lives.Just as the addition of a sugar crystal helps transform sugarcane juice into solid molasses, the causeless mercy of our Guru Maharaja has flooded our desert-like hearts with the ecstatic love of Sri Gaurahari. • Before We Trace the Role of Sri Chaitanya (AD 1486 -1533)
Before we trace the role of Sri Chaitanya (A.D. 1486 -1533) in the Bhakti movement in connection with the spread of neo-Vaishnavism in Bengal, a general history of Bhakti cult is traced first in an all India perspective for proper understanding of the subject. The Indian religious life is characterised by the existence of a number of theistic or ders and the personal approach of the followers of a theistic order to their deity of wor ship, is "distinguished by an intense devotion and a sense of absolute surrender to the god, the technical name for which is Bhakti explained as 'exceptional attachment' paranur aktir isvare"(1l The emergence of Bhakti cult i.e. intense love and adoration for a personal god, is one of the outstanding phenomena in the history of the evolution of religion in an cient India which "produced out of its own resources a number of distinct systems and sects".(2l It is observed by Dr. B.K. Majumdar that "the germ of Bhakti in the sense of a religious doctrine is not even faintly traceable in the Vedic age. The Rigvedic solar deity Vishnu, identified later with Devakiputra Krishna with whose deification Bhagavatism started had at first no important role to play." This view of Dr. Majumdar is objected to by Prof. V. S. Agrawala who believes that the germs of Bhakti are certainly found in the hymns of the Rigveda. He cites some hymns in favour of his opinionYl In connection with the Bhakti cult one is expected to discuss the history of Bhagavatism, the worship of Vasudeva-Krishna later known as Vaishnavism.

Jagannath Misra's wife was Sachi Devi, daughter of the scholar Nilamber Chakravarti. She also was a pious lady. A son was born to Jagannath Misra and Sachi on the night of the full moon, on 4th February, 1486 A.D., at Nabadwip. The newborn child was named Viswambar. He was the tenth child of Jagannath Misra and Sachi Devi. The first eight--all daughters--died soon after their birth. The ninth was Viswarup, a son. He abandoned the world at sixteen when he was being forced to marry and entered a monastery in South India. The women, thinking that Sachi had lost many children, gave the tenth child, Viswambar, the bitter name of Nimai (derived from the name of the Neem tree) as a protection against all evil influences.

  • Charismatic Renewal in Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Part I)
Charismatic Renewal in Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Part I) Charismatic renewal and institutionalization in the history of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and the Gaudiya Math – Jagadananda Das – “History is the biographies of great men.” Thomas Carlyle. If traditional India could be said to subscribe to a theory of history, it would be the “great man theory,” which holds that history moves by the actions of great men upon it. Perhaps the best known of the Bhagavad-gita’s 700 verses is the one in which Krishna promises to appear in the world whenever there is irreligious practice or rampant injustice in human society (Gita 4.7). However different this belief may be from the Shi’a’s belief in the Mahdi or the Jew’s expectation of a Messiah, its influence has been equally pervasive in Hindu society. Not only has it led to messianic hopes for a savior, but also to the conviction that wherever or whenever greatness appears in human society, it is a manifestation of the divine (Gita 10.42). Though such a belief can naturally be exploited for political ends or to buttress the status quo, it has also played a role in the religious sphere as a means of legitimizing change. It thus seems that almost every prominent spiritual leader who makes a mark on Hindu society sooner or later claims to be an avatar, or becomes, as the Indian media disparagingly call them, “a God-man.” This belief is present in almost every branch of Hinduism, whether Vaishnava, Shakta or Shaiva, though its expression may take different forms.
