Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

Raw patriotism, a fervent belief in a god, will get traction from an ideologue, but most people find it difficult to risk their lives for an abstraction. They can, however, be highly motivated by concrete reality. By seeing say, a central symbol of their civilization going up in flames. If a Judean saw the Temple attacked, a Roman saw the Senate or the Colosseum going up in flames, an Egyptian saw the Great Pyramid leveled, or if a Gaul from Britannia saw Stonehenge destroyed by a bomb, they would grasp that it was a building. But they would also see it as an attempt to destroy their identity, their people, and their way of life. That can be highly motivating, in the short-term. Seeing hundreds or thousands of your own people die? A particularly vicious attack can be a rallying point. “Remember Gazaca!” “Remember Ecbatana!” “Remember the Day of Transition!” But what happens when entire populations are displaced? What happens when the second generation is born, out of their homeland, and no longer remembers Gotaland, Gazaca, or Ecbatana? What happens when the memories of these places are dull, even for the people who once lived there? How do you motivate a population that is weary of war unending? A soldier has to make the abstract concrete.

This collaborative record represents Travis Scott’s first album since 2016 and Quavo’s first “solo” album ever, which is exciting as he’s long been pegged as the breakout Migo. Though it seemed at first like one of those fictions rappers spin on a whim— seriously, where’s Kanye’s Bowie cover album?—it felt scarily real once they shared the spiky sleeve design from Hunter S. Thompson’s favorite pen devil Ralph Steadman. From the start, the album hits you in the face. First comes an Otis Redding sample that exists only to prove that the rappers can afford it (see Jay-Z and Kanye, “Otis”). Then, one of the best opening lines on a rap album since Vince Staples’ Summertime ’06. But as “Modern Slavery” trudges on, it becomes apparent that this isn’t going to be a stadium spectacle but a low- stakes one-off. Scott is rap’s high priest of camp. He’s great at hiding in the staging, and on his records and at his shows he erects gothic constructions around himself to give his music the illusion of importance. But he has nowhere to hide on Huncho Jack. It’s not that he drops clunkers—he doesn’t try hard enough for those. Instead, every bar is depressingly generic. A typical lyric: “Take that bar, no 3G/…X-rated, no PG,” from “Saint Laurent Mask.” The Chicago dirty rapper CupcakKe used almost the same “PG” lyric on “Spoiled Milk Titties” from this year’s Ephorize.
