  • Building Cold War Warriors: Socialization of the Final Cold War Generation
BUILDING COLD WAR WARRIORS: SOCIALIZATION OF THE FINAL COLD WAR GENERATION Steven Robert Bellavia A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Andrew M. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

Davitt 2015 2 Chapter 1: Ascending Something that often gets lost when people train young soldiers is that everyone needs something to fight for. Raw patriotism, a fervent belief in a god, will get traction from an ideologue, but most people find it difficult to risk their lives for an abstraction. They can, however, be highly motivated by concrete reality. By seeing say, a central symbol of their civilization going up in flames. If a Judean saw the Temple attacked, a Roman saw the Senate or the Colosseum going up in flames, an Egyptian saw the Great Pyramid leveled, or if a Gaul from Britannia saw Stonehenge destroyed by a bomb, they would grasp that it was a building. But they would also see it as an attempt to destroy their identity, their people, and their way of life. That can be highly motivating, in the short-term. Seeing hundreds or thousands of your own people die? A particularly vicious attack can be a rallying point. “Remember Gazaca!” “Remember Ecbatana!” “Remember the Day of Transition!” But what happens when entire populations are displaced? What happens when the second generation is born, out of their homeland, and no longer remembers Gotaland, Gazaca, or Ecbatana? What happens when the memories of these places are dull, even for the people who once lived there? How do you motivate a population that is weary of war unending? A soldier has to make the abstract concrete.

  • I Hope You're Wrong About Scottsdale
I Hope You’re Wrong About Scottsdale Scarpa 1 I HOPE YOU’RE WRONG ABOUT SCOTTSDALE I’m paid by the minute to tell the future, no matter which way I tell it. That’s the best part about being a phone psychic in the first place— if there’s a consequence to being wrong, it isn’t one easily measured. I answered the ad in the Independence Tribune on a whim last week after the third in a series of faux-Italian restaurants where I had waitressed let me go, citing a dour disposition and habitual lateness. This from the same eatery that advertises, If our service doesn’t meet your standards, lower your standards. The woman at Psychic Source who took my call had a voice like cotton candy; the words melted sweet and hushed in the lilt of her southern drawl. Her laugh was the sound of a cork pulled from a champagne bottle. In this industry, voice is everything. Hers was one you instantly trusted your future with; one from which any prophecy of grandeur felt attainable and any promise of gold seemed imminent. She called herself Eden, a name far too fitting to have been given to her at birth. That there was an interview process seemed antithetical to the psychic powers the job title implied, but it was a cakewalk; a charade that lasted all of five minutes. Do you consider yourself a rather intuitive person? Yes. Would you describe yourself as having premonitory instincts? Yes, very much so. Do you currently have a landline phone in your home? With that, Eden had given me the job and explained the rules and regulations.

The band includes vocalist David Draiman, bassist John Moyer, guitarist/keyboardist Dan Donegan, and drummer Mike Wengren. Former band members are vocalist Erich Awalt and bassist Steve Kmak. The band has released six studio albums, five of which have consecutively debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Disturbed went into hiatus in October 2011, during which the band’s members focused on various side projects, and returned in June 2015, releasing their first album in four years, Immortalized, on August 21, 2015. They also recorded and released one live album, Disturbed: Live at Red Rocks on November 18, 2016, which was recorded on August 18, 2016 at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, located about 10 miles west of Denver, Colorado. Their seventh studio album, Evolution, was released on October 19, 2018. Before David Draiman joined Disturbed, guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist Steve “Fuzz” Kmak were in a band called Brawl with vocalist Erich Awalt. Before changing their name to “Brawl”, however, Donegan mentioned in the band’s DVD, Decade of Disturbed, that the name was originally going to be “Crawl”; they switched it to “Brawl”, due to the name already being used by another band. Awalt left the band shortly after the recording of a demo tape; the other three members advertised for a singer.

Her insightful advice has helped me significantly develop the ideas presented in this thesis and her sincere encouragement over the past two years has helped me significantly develop my own understanding of myself as a student and an academic. Amber Brock’s counsel and friendship has kept me grounded in my ventures, this most recent one included, and I thank her for her invaluable support.
