Karma and Female Birth1 Bhikkhu Anālayo2 Abstract With the present paper I examine the notion that birth as a woman is the result of bad karma based on selected canonical and post-canonical Buddhist texts. Introduction In her study of the position of women in Thai Buddhism, Kabilsingh (31) remarks,“it is frequently said, for example, that ‘women were born from their bad karma’ . many women are convinced that they carry a heavy load of negative karma due to the simple fact of their gender.” As a result of this, according to Kabilsingh (16) “Thai women seem to accept their suppression without complaint.
