AIWC General Meetings

The last of the current General Meetings, the new venture introduced! by the AIWC in January finished on a high on May 9th with many seasoned and new members coming together to enjoy each other’s company. During the monthly meetings members have had the opportunity to introduce new activity groups, events, outings, workshops etc. and also to raise any concerns and voice their opinions on the running of the club. Over the months the club has also been honoured to welcome to the meetings a diverse group of speakers on various topics from health and fitness, local media and celebrity, Swiss history and renewable energy.

The! second Friday of each month is now well on its way to becoming the dedicated “Club Morning”.....remember everyone is welcome! It is planned that the meetings will continue in a similar style in the new club year with more focus on what is going on in and around the club and the usual variety interesting speakers. A big “THANK YOU” to the members for their continuing support in this new venture. Look forward to seeing you September! Follow up to May’s General Meeting

For! those who missed our fabulous May General Meeting last Friday, with speaker Prof. Sophia Haussener from EPFL, and by popular demand by those present, we are happy to give you access to Prof. Haussener’s presentation. Now we too can calculate our own personal footprint as well as see the energy consumption of our individual home countries. Thank you again Professor and the General Meeting team for such an interesting presentation and a wonderful general meeting— our best yet. What a way to wrap up the year!

We never meant to have a vineyard! by Alison King

“You must be living your dream!’ A common remark made by fans of TV programmes about people escaping the rat race and transforming their lives.

I was keen to get on with the wine tasting so that I could do something more interesting, and merely smiled.

We weren’t “living our dream” at all . After finding a holiday home in Italy that ticked all the boxes except one, it came with a vineyard, we had become reluctant wine producers. Suddenly we had responsibility for 500 olive trees, 4.5 hectares of vines, and an Italian employee who spoke no English. As well as learning Italian, we were faced with the challenge of selling 20 000 bottles of wine each year. Too much to drink ourselves, not enough for bulk sales, so we launched ourselves into tastings and sales from the property. Hard work, and the impenetrable Italian bureaucracy didn’t help. Providing a toilet with the right height ceiling was only one problem.

Tourists steadily made their way up our long, rocky drive, paid little attention to opening hours and I went onto auto pilot with sales pitch. One group appeared in our bedroom whilst we were enjoying a siesta, some were hoping to seduce girlfriends and requested the use of a bedroom, others would only buy wine that had, and I quote, “ been passed by the rabbi”.

Comedy, drama and frustration on a daily basis, sometimes more of a nightmare than an idyll. In the end we sold, to an escapee from the rat race. Do I miss it ? Yes……occasionally.

Evening Readers’: May Read “An Officer and a Spy”, by Robert Harris Book Review by Rhonda! Langham Don't start this book if you have anything AT ALL on your to-do list. Believe me, you won't get anything done once you start reading it. It's a fast read (2 1/2 days for me), well paced, and a thriller. The tragedy is that many of these events actually happened. Anti-semitism, political ambition, lack of moral convictions, and downright lying led to the inhumane incarceration of A. Dreyfuss. Harris creates a worthy novel surrounding the events which divided France and shook the world. One of the great miscarriages of injustice comes to life under Harris's pen.
