Hiatus 2015 Special Events at Bamcinématek Hiatus 2015 Special Events at BAMcinématek The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. JAN 12 at 7pm William Friedkin presents Costa-Gavras’ Z (1969) Friedkin in person! With Jean-Louis Trintignant, Yves Montand, Irene Papas. William Friedkin appears at BAMcinématek to discuss Costa-Gavras’ electrifying conspiracy thriller, which has had a marked influence on his similarly visceral films, including his Oscar-winning The French Connection. Jean-Louis Trintignant stars as a magistrate whose inquiry into the murder of a prominent left-wing politician (Montand) exposes a widespread government cover-up and thrusts him into a political minefield. With its live-wire energy and gritty vision of institutional corruption, Z crackles with staccato, Oscar-winning editing and Mikis Theodorakis’ bristling bouzouki score. JAN 16 at 8pm Jean-Luc Godard’s GOODBYE TO LANGUAGE 3D (2014) Presented on the Steinberg Screen at the BAM Harvey Theater “A teasing and exhilarating film, one that flirts with despair but somehow, I think, comes out on the side of joy.” —Stephanie Zacharek, The Village Voice With Héloise Godet, Kamel Abdeli, Richard Chevallier. The only film to receive a round of applause mid-screening at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival (where it won the Jury Prize), Jean-Luc Godard’s brilliant, mind-bending experiment in 3D follows a stray dog that wanders from town to country and, over the course of some seasons, observes what seems to be a couple falling in love, then falling apart. Impossible both to summarize and to forget, this groundbreaking work by one of the greatest living auteurs “offers up generous, easy pleasures with jolts of visual beauty, bursts of humor, and swells of song” (Manohla Dargis, The New York Times). BAMcinématek presents this special screening of Goodbye to Language 3D on the Steinberg Screen at the BAM Harvey Theater, the largest New York screen to showcase Godard’s latest masterpiece. FEB 3 Two by Jody Lee Lipes BALLET 422 (2014) and NY EXPORT: OPUS JAZZ (2010) Lipes in person! BAMcinemaFest alum Jody Lee Lipes (Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be the Same), who won acclaim for his work as the cinematographer on Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture and Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible, comes to BAM to present his two award-winning collaborations with New York City Ballet: a sneak preview of Ballet 422, a vérité portrait illuminating the process behind up-and-coming choreographer Justin Peck’s creation of a new work at NYCB featuring music by Sufjan Stevens, and NY Export: Opus Jazz, a filmed adaptation of Jerome Robbins’ smash hit ballet-in-sneakers about disaffected urban youth. Building from the much- debated passing of postmodernism, this study focuses on several key postmodern aspects that take a different slant in this movie. The film points out the value of aspects that had lost their meaning within the fiction typical of postmodernism—such as the absence of causality; sincere honesty as opposed to destructive irony; or the loss of faith in Lyotardian meta-narratives. We shall look at the nature of the paradigm shift to link it to the desire to overcome postmodern values through a recovery of Romantic ideas.

The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked.

A máquina fílmica e a tela preta/branca como ferramentas de desterritorialização The filmmaking machine and the black/white screen as a tool of deterritorialization https://doi.org/10.34112/2317-0972a2018v36n72p15-28 Tanya Shilina-Conte1 Resumo: Este trabalho2 explora os papéis e as funções da tela preta e branca no cinema. Abstract: This paper explores the roles and functions of the black/white screen in ci- nema. September 19, 2019 COLCOA French Film Festival Monday, September 23 – Saturday, September 28 DGA in Hollywood $$ This film festival showcases the latest work from France. It only looks like it the Coca Cola Film Festival if you read it too fast. September 3, 2019 Critic's Picks: A September To-Do List for Film Buffs in L.A Alain Delon in 'Purple Moon' (1960) A classic lesbian drama, French noirs starring Alain Delon and Jean Gabin and a series of matinees devoted to Katharine Hepburn are among the plentiful vintage and classic options for SoCal film buffs this month. OLIVIA AT THE LAEMMLE ROYAL | 11523 Santa Monica Blvd. Already underway and screening daily through Sept. 5 at the Laemmle Royal is a new digital restoration of Jacqueline Audry’s trailblazing 1951 feature Olivia, one of the first films, French or otherwise, to deal with female homosexuality. Set in a 19th-century Parisian finishing school for girls, the film depicts the struggle between two head mistresses (Edwige Feuillere and Simone Simon) for the affection of their students, and how one girl’s (Marie-Claire Olivia) romantic urges stir jealousy in the house. Audry, one of the key female filmmakers of post-World War II France, stages this feverish chamber drama (based on a novel by the English writer Dorothy Bussy) with a delicate yet incisive touch, allowing the story’s implicit sensuality to simmer ominously without boiling over into undue hysterics. Lesbian dramas would soon become more explicit, but few have matched Olivia’s unique combination of elegance and eroticism. A North Wind THE NEW REALISM OF THE FRENCH- WALLOON CINÉMA DU NORD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY NIELS NIESSEN IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY ADVISER: CESARE CASARINO NOVEMBER, 2013 © Niels Niessen, 2013 i ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Ideas sometimes come in the middle of the night yet they are never fully one’s own. They are for a very large part the fruits of the places and organizations one works or is supported by, the communities one lives in and traverses, and the people one loves and is loved by. First of all, I would like to acknowledge the support I received from the following institutions: the American Council of Learned Societies, the Huygens Scholarship Program of the Dutch government, the Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds (The Netherlands), and, at the University of Minnesota, the Center for German & European Studies (and its donor Hella Mears), the Graduate School (and the Harold Leonard Memorial Fellowship in Film Study), as well as the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature. As for my home department, I could not have wished for a warmer and more intellectually vibrant community to pursue my graduate studies, and I express my gratitude to all who I have worked with. A special word of thanks to my academic adviser, Cesare Casarino, who has taught me how to read many of the philosophies that, explicitly or implicitly, have shaped my thinking in the following pages, and who has made me see that cinema too is a form of thought.

  • Bamcinématek Presents 3D in the 21St Century, a 33- Film Showcase of Stereoscopic Cinema, May 1—17
BAMcinématek presents 3D in the 21st Century, a 33- film showcase of stereoscopic cinema, May 1—17 Featuring big-budget blockbusters, high concept mind-benders by arthouse icons, and shorts by acclaimed visual artists in a variety of 3D formats From Jean-Luc Godard to Justin Bieber and Ken Jacobs to Katy Perry The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Apr 1, 2015—Bursting out of the screen at BAMcinématek from Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 17, 3D in the 21st Century is a first-of-its-kind survey of recent films that showcase the full range of stereoscopic cinema’s wondrous—and sometimes divisive—potential. A literal expansion of the visual and emotional possibilities of film, 3D’s immersive landscapes and retina-dazzling imagery have, in the last few years, extended beyond their natural habitat of the big-budget blockbuster into documentaries, musicals, animation, and the avant-garde. A fad in the early 50s cherished by film buffs, 3D flirted with comebacks for half a century—until the $3 billion box office of James Cameron’s visionary, lovingly-wrought sci-fi epic Avatar (2009—May 2) assured a full-on revival, this time with easier-on-the-eyes polarized 3D supplanting the familiar red-and-blue cardboard glasses. Even before that, Robert Zemeckis’ visceral fantasy Beowulf (2007—May 8 & 9) hurled weaponry, monsters, and Angelina Jolie into your lap, and Henry Selick turned a Neil Gaiman book into the gentler (but still twisted) stop- motion fairy tale Coraline (2009—May 8 & 9).
