Photo by Kathleen Kennedy WESLEY TOWNSHIP resident Kathleen Kennedy visited the South Island dam Jan. 26 with camera strapped on hoping to get a photo of a pair of bald eagles frequenting the area below the river dam. She spotted an eagle hunting on the far side of the river when it swooped down grab a large fish. Twice the bird, with the fish in its talons, struggled to take flight off the water. Finally it gained enough height to reach the trees in the park. Over land, the fish wiggled free of its grasp and hit the ground. That caught the attention of passing crows who investigated closely as the eagle swooped down, grabbed the fish and carried to a nearby tree branch. While the each made a breakfast out of the fish and crows pestered it from both sides, waiting for a morsel. “It was such a delight to watch,” said Kennedy, an avid photographer. “It was Mother Nature at its best and shows how important the dam is for keeping the water open for wildlife during the winter.”
