Newsletter: Issue 15 Easter 2019

Welcome to the Easter addition of the College newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading about some of the activities our school community have taken part in during the Spring term. As well as students working incredibly hard in lessons, it is pleas- ing to read the successes of our students beyond their formal curriculum.

As always, the success of our sports men and woman is evident within our local community and beyond! We have had a num- ber of students competing at national and international level in a wide range of events including cricket, windsurfing, gymnas- tics and athletics. The commitment of our students also extends to our outdoor education department who are practising hard for the Ten Tors event as well completing the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

As you will read in the faculty news, students have taken part in a number of enrichment activities. Trips, competitions and talks from visiting speakers all serve to enrich the learning of our students and we look forward to developing these further at the College next year.

Our Sixth Form students are currently preparing hard for their AS, A-level and BTEC exams this summer, many of whom have offers from some of the UK’s top universities. Similarly, the Year 11 exams start in earnest next month and they too are work- ing hard. It is so encouraging to see so many students taking up the opportunity to attend after school revision sessions. Some students are even coming into college during the Easter holidays for extra sessions. We wish all our students taking ex- ams this summer the very best of luck.

One of my highlights in the last few weeks has been interviewing a number of Sixth Form students for our senior student lead- ership posts. The competition was tough so introducing Callan, Emily, Chandler and Erin to the rest of the college in assemblies this week was a very proud moment.

Finally, can I take the opportunity on behalf of the staff at to wish you an enjoyable and relaxing Easter holi- day and I look forward to welcoming all students back on Tuesday 23 April.

Best wishes

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 2 Comic Relief 2019

Our Heads of House braved the stocks for Comic Relief this year with students donating money to throw wet sponges or buckets of water at them.

Arguably the shorter straw, saw Mr Munro, Mr Stevens, Dr Butt, Mr Shuttleworth and Mr Whiting baring their (decidedly hairy) legs for a gentle(!) waxing in front of a packed Hall.

Thanks to all for volunteering and to all that donated.

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 3 Harry Potter Night

Witches, Wizards and Muggles gathered at the Hogwarts’ (College) Library to celebrate all things Harry Potter on Thursday 7 February. The magical evening was enjoyed by over seventy students and their parents, with potion making, meeting our very own talking sorting hat, treasure hunts and a fancy dress competition just some of the many activities that were taking place.

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 4 Regional Indoor Rowing Competition

On Friday 8th February, over 500 keen rowers took to the 24 ergos in the Devon Hall. The Schools’ Championships were organised and held by Bideford College for the second consecutive year and was a real success.

The competition saw students from Year 6 -11 row for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6minutes respectively. In all of the age groups there were competitors from Bideford College, College, Torrington, Kingsley ,.and Egloskerry Primary. The final event of the day was the gruesome 2,000m where a Championship record was set; Simone, from , made light work of the 2km and completed the distance in 6:32 secondss.

The best thing about the College event was that the majority of the College participants had never competed in an indoor ergo competition before or even sat on a machine.

The event was a real success and Mr O’Donoghue would like to thank all that helped make this event even more successful than last year; he believe that the 180+ students that represented Bideford College got a great deal from the event and epitomizes the incredibly popular uptake there is for extracurricular at the College.

Saturday 9th was the second day of the rowing extravaganza and once again provided the opportunity for students to sign up for the open event. It was fantastically rewarding to see so many more participants for this event than last year and we look forward to hosting an even bigger event next year.

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 5 Arthur House News

As another term draws to a close and the GCSE exams get ever closer, school and life seem to flash past in an instant. The weather is brightening up and the temptation is to ‘down tools’ a little a bit and all bask in the early spring warmth. How- ever, it is imperative that we all keep pushing, the work which is done now, will pay dividends in the future.

Talking of the future, I continually remind students about their future. From my perspective as a Head of House, and a former student of Bideford College my aim is to encourage them to leave the sleepy coastal town at some point and ex- perience life in another part of the world, whether this is through university, travelling or by finding a trade or job which takes them away, for a little while at least. There is a big world out there it is important that we all enjoy it.

I would like to congratulate the boys’ year 10 Rugby team who achieved another impressive victory in the North Devon Rugby final, especially hearing there were notable performances from Arthur students; Louis Mathers, Brandon Taylor and Toby Ayres.

It is the point in the year, we say goodbye to our House Captains Lydia Bray-Smith and Sam Gale, both students have per- formed the role with dignity and maturity beyond their years. We as a House thank them and wish them all the best with their upcoming exams.

This term has been very interesting, filled with book character potato characters, (thank you everyone who entered in Ar- thur), parents’ evening and of course, the Year 9 options evening, which was quite nerve-racking. But vital in us looking at how we move onto the next path.

Parents’ evening can be equally nerve racking, not knowing what the teachers will say, however, it is important for your par- ents to hear how you are getting on and how you can improve in future lessons.

Anyway, we have already seen some fantastic entries for the recycling bin competition, keep them coming in guys! We need to win the House cup this year!

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 6 Brunel House News

Wow! Another term is nearly over and I can’t quite believe that we are now over half way through the academic year and the Summer term is nearly upon us! So much has happened this half term involving lots of Brunel students from exam perfor- mances in drama to sport cup finals in PE, it really has been a busy half term.

A big congratulations must go to the Year 10 rugby team who won their North Devon Schools’ league final against Park 24-7 at Bideford RFC which means that they are now cup, league and 7 aside champions Jacob Stevenson and Tyree Conteh from Bru- nel both played brilliantly.

Jacob Stevenson also recently managed to get to the semi finals of the English Schools Boxing Championships!

Flynn Jennings ran at the SIAB school’s cross country international at Santry, Dublin. He came 4th overall, with the England team coming first as a team. An amazing achievement!

The Year 8 and year 10 girls’ netball teams visited Kingsley for a netball match with both teams returning victorious, a special well done for their continual commitment to the Year 10 netball team must go to Gemma Cleave, Molly Watts and Zoe Cross all of which are Brunel students who really are fantastic role models to our younger players.

This half term we have continued to raise money for our charity Edukid and we are determined to provide a year’s education for Brian, a student in Uganda. We raised £80 through our silver amnesty so thank you very much for any contributions you made, 9SB were the tutor group who raised the most money and were awarded with some chocolates to share. We are now raffling a large Easter egg in the hope of raising a few more pounds towards our target. Raffle tickets are £1 a strip. Thank you to Gemma Cleave, Megan Hare, Daisy Williams, Caleb White, Victoria Smith and Maya Passmore for giving up their time and visiting tutor groups in order to the sell raffle tickets.

We are currently looking for a new leadership team to drive Brunel forward. Thank you to Josh Jordan, Charlie Mallaband, Me- gan Hare, Joe Spencer, Lolah Olde, Caleb White and Aimee Williams for all the work they have done over the last year. It has been a pleasure to work with you. It is time however for you to step down and therefore I will shortly be looking through the new applications for the new leadership team. This is an exciting time with lots of opportunities for the new leadership team to take on. So that just leaves me to remind Year 10 about their first set of GCSE mock exams after the holidays and therefore they need to be preparing for these. Year 11 and Year 13 good luck with your final revision over the holidays too, the exam season is fast approaching!

Mrs Luke - Head of Brunel House

What a great Spring Term we have had this year. We have earned lots of money from the ‘Giant Easter Egg’ raffle for the Edukid Charity. Next term we are collecting sweets for a sweet hamper to gain money for the Edukid Charity to help reach our total of £300. Please can you bring in sweets next term, as soon as possible, to help donate to the hamper to raise money, thank you.

Year 10 had a great trip to to help decide on what they should pick in the future. I hope they had a great term and learnt a lot. Also, they have mocks straight after the holidays so, as there is time for fun, also revise lots to be well prepared. Year 11 have their GCSE Exams soon too and I wish them luck on doing there very best to achieve what they would like.

I also congratulate the 5 lucky students who now have the roll of House Captains for Brunel. Congratulations and I am sure they will do great things for this house, but goodbye to the previous ones. Well done for gaining lots of house points and keeping up this attendance. Have a good Easter. Enjoy. Stay Safe. And enjoy lots of chocolate! - Caleb White

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 7 Coleridge House News

What a fantastic half term it has been for Coleridge House - there is so much to write about. I have been overwhelmed by seeing so many students make great progress in their academic studies - as seen in the latest reports. This, coupled with an improved attendance figure for the House, puts students in a much better position to pursue a future career when they leave Bideford College.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and carers of the Year 10 students who have engaged in the work expe- rience process – nearly all students in Coleridge have now had their first form signed and completed, which is excellent. The final step is to follow up the initial letters, phone calls and CVs to secure the exciting placements before others do andbe ready for July 1st.

I should probably give a special mention on this page to Adam Leworthy who has won the Park Run this term at Bideford Park on a Saturday morning – I’ll beat you one day Adam, although Flynn Jennings (Brunel) is the real star of endurance running. Adam, Josh Glover and Zach McMurray were also part of the rugby team who won the final v Park last week – an excellent achievement.

Continuing on a sporting front, congratulations to Finlay Newton Chalmers and Henry Cox who were part of the Year 8 foot- ball team and scooped ‘Team of the Year’ at the 2019 Expressive Arts presentation evening last week – well deserved.

Congratulations to 7JM and 7HS who boast the best attendance in the whole of the College. Attending College is something that is promoted throughout the House with a strong emphasis on students enjoying College. We realise the strong correla- tion between attendance and attainment and these 52 Year 7s are certainly in a strong position to achieve great things with the way they are going – well done Mr Maughan and Miss Smith!

Finally good luck to Year 10s who start their mocks after Easter, and of course to the Year 11s and 13s who will be starting their actual exams – “crazy how quick it actually arrives” was what one Year 11 said to me this week. I am sure you are all well drilled and in the habit of your revision timetable now, but just in case you aren’t NOW IS THE TIME! Good luck to all as I have enjoyed reading about your future careers from those of you who have had careers appointments.

Fingers crossed for Sports day, all exams, the House Cup and the Easter bunny delivering.

Mr O’Donoghue—Head of Coleridge House

This half term at Bideford College has been a very busy one, with Year 10s preparing for their mocks (lots of revision), inter- house football and netball, and sports finals; the Devon County Rugby finals and the Dartmoor Challenge: both bringing tri- umph for the school. The Year 10 mocks have proven to be quite stressful for students, bringing a lot of revision to prepare.

This combined with leadership applications has proven to be a lot of work for the year group. Year 9 and 10 girls netball teams finally got their netball dresses - uniting them and making them feel even more of a team; I guarantee there will be even more successes from them. Over a weekend in March, the Ten Tors team trekked an incredible 31 miles, which was excellent training for their final walk.

Farwell House News

Pictured: Jill & Eddie Farwell and their children

What a busy term it has been!

Farwell attendance currently stands at 93.29%, up 2% on last year. However, we would like to see that rise towards 95% by the end of the summer term and I urge all parents to ensure that, whenever possible, students are attending school. Miss Wadham and 7SW are proud to be the best attending tutor group in Farwell at 96.6%. Well done and keep up the fantastic attendanceto school. Good attendance is the key to outstanding progress and achievement. I would particularly like to praise the following students who, at the time of writing have not missed a single day this academic year: Well done, try to keep this up to the end of the summer term!

Henry Callaghan, Amy Clarke, Ellie Stewart, Ryley Curtis, Alison Wright, Ellie Appleton, Ellie Fiddy, Adam Williams, Matthew Evans, TJ McQuillan, Oscar Parkhouse, Amy Walter, Jack Whitmore, William Newby, Fletcher Powe, Scarlet East, Lauren Apple- ton, Gabriel Arcill-Burrows, Nicole Berry, Eliza Callaghan, Sophie Evans, Jamie Parkinson-Steele, Ben Quance, Holly Braunton, Sadie Kingston-Ford, Jasmine Birch, William James, Liv Tait.

I am very pleased that so many Year 11 students are attending after school revision sessions and would ask that they continue to do this through next term. Any support in this is much appreciated. Some students have been invited to attend Easter revi- sion sessions and it is important that they arrive on time so that they can be signed into school and taken to their classrooms. It is vital that all Year 11 students now have a revision plan in place and that they are putting time aside on an evening and week- ends to revise for their forthcoming GCSE’s. Likewise, this is an important time for Year 10 students. Following the break, mock exams will begin. Students need to schedule a revision timetable and allocating time during the holiday preparing for these exams.

It’s the time of year again when our current House Captains stand down from their leadership roles. I would like to thank Liv Tait and Caleb Presley for all of the hard work and effort they have put into their roles - they really have been a credit to the House, their leadership qualities have been outstanding, particularly on the Year 7 residential last September.

This also opens up a valuable opportunity for any interested Year 9 and 10 students to be appointed to leadership roles. Any- one interested in becoming one of our 6 leaders, needs to start putting their manifesto together over the holidays. Then they need to begin a campaign as to why they should be elected. Following this, other students will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite candidates on polling day.

As always, I wish everyone a restful Easter break. Let’s all look forward to achieving our best in the summer term. High on the agenda will be defending our Sports Day victory for the second year running!

Thank you to our ever growing number of sponsors who have helped out with our rewards assembly this term. They are McDonalds. Subway, Domino’s Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi, The Milky Way, Big Sheep, Nike factory outlet, Clip and climb Exeter, Tea on the Green, Plymouth aquarium, The Eden project and Asda.

Warrick Gibbins - Head of Farwell House

We feel that the November mock exams have been useful in helping us find revision techniques which help us. This started us on the revision path earlier than we would have done otherwise. The second mock exams have shown that our revision strate- gies are working and that progress is possible even on a short timescale. Over the Easter holidays we will be continuing our revision towards the final exams, many of us will also be coming into school for extra revision sessions. Our first exam is just 14 school days away.

News

In the last newsletter I was proud to say that Hepworth was at the top of the House points chart; at the time of writing we are 600 points clear still! Well done Hepworth: even if we don’t make it to the top of the chart after all the competitions, progress scores and events have been factored in you have truly done yourself proud!

Hepworth is also proud of our student’s individual success this term.

Isobel Pink 7TA/H competed in America for Falcons Gymnastics, an accomplishment in itself but also managed an incredible Gold on bars and beam, Silver on floor thus placing 1st overall for level 6. This may mean that she will be promoted to the elite squad, a reward justly deserved. Also, part of the contingent that went to America was Lauren Taylor of 10RC/H, Mrs Luke in particular has said on many occasions how graceful you are and that you are one to watch for future! Congratulations to you both.

The Year 10 rugby team has done the so-called triple: the cup, the league and the rugby 7’s championship! Hepworthians who have been in the team this season are: Matt Lewis, Jack Parsons, Ben Pomeroy and Charlie Mugford. A great way to end the season and looking forward to the team defending their titles in their final year!

Also, sticking on the sporting front, a new game in Bideford College’s arsenal: Handball. The U13 squad, both boys and girls, becoming Devon champions! Making up part of the team were Rafe Barnes, Libby Stevens and Jasmine Taunu. Superb effort for the first Devon championships!

Congratulations also go out to Callan Macdonald SF07DM/H, who after an application an interview with our Principal Dr An- kers was appointed to the position of Head Boy. Congratulations and I know, from personal experience, the job will be re- warding and open avenues to your future you may not have thought. Well done and good luck.

A busy term to say the least but one that will seem like a walk in the park after the next: exam season! With that being said I hope that the Year 11s are well into their revision timetables and set for a running start to their exams. Year 10’s should also be looking to the Year 11s for inspiration as they too head towards their mock exams. Best of luck to all.

Fingers crossed for Friday, and hope to see those blue ribbons on ‘you know what’! Hope I haven’t jinxed it now!

Happy Easter!

Mr T J Cross - Head Of Hepworth House

As the Spring term comes to an end, we are given a chance to reflect back on the progress of the term. So, as you may already know, I’m in Year 11 and currently doing my GCSES which has been a bit of a stressful experience at times. It’s hard being able to juggle eight different subjects at once and prioritise each one equally, however taking art and drama gave me a platform to be able to express, not only my creative abilities, but also feelings and emotions that I am not able to do within other subjects .

Recently revision has become most of the Year 11s’ best friend and the staff have chosen to run a sixth period to help the stu- dents prepare for the upcoming exams, in my opinion this has been a great help and something I believe every other year in the future would definitely benefit from.

A final piece of advice I would like to give, is that school and education doesn’t last forever and no matter how boring or an- noying each day might seem this is the door way to each and every one of our futures and we should never take that for grant- ed and try and enjoy each day as much as we can . So make the most out of your education don’t stress about it and be the best version of you, you can be. Hope you all have a great Easter and see you all in the new term.

On Monday 25 March 2019, Year 10 catering students visited Petroc for a Hospitality and Tourism Takeover Day organised by Springboard UK, a charity which focusses on recruitment within the hospitality industry. Many em- ployers were available to talk to about different careers paths and opportunities within the hospitality industry and the students enthusiastically took part in a number of workshops including Sensory Food Tasting with Brend Hotels, Fish and Butchery Workshops run by Phillip Dennis and Combe Martin Abattoir, sales, marketing, and hotel recruitment organised by Kentisbury Grange Hotel, non-alcoholic cocktail making behind the Taw Bar and a tour of the Beauty and Spa facilities. It proved to be a very informative day with students being able to explore many sectors within the hospitality and tourism industry.

Sixth Form News

Holocaust Memorial Day:

On Monday the 28th of January, the Year 12 History students represented the Sixth Form in Exeter at the Holocaust Memorial Day, along with a handful of Year 7 students. We visited Exeter Cathedral first, where we attended the “Remembrance of the Holocaust” service and it was explained to us that the theme this year was “ripped from home”. After the service we went to a synagogue where we learnt about the Jewish culture and their way of practicing their religion. We learnt that there are three different kinds of Judaism; Reform, Conservative and Orthodox. They all believe in the same God for example, but have different views on things like facial hair and original traditions of Jewish religion. An example is that traditionally men pray on the first floor where as women have to pray on the second floor. The Orthodox branch believes this is how it should be but the Reformed branch say men and women can pray together. After, we had the opportunity to talk to a Syrian refugee cou- ple. This was by far the most eye-opening experience of them all. Here, we learnt that the Syrian refugees are also just peo- ple. They didn’t want to be ripped from their own home, in fact we learnt that they both had very good lives in Syria. Howev- er, they are now making a new start in England and are very happy. Nonetheless, nothing could ever make up for what they have lost. Overall the experience was interesting and eye-opening, learning about different cultures and most importantly remembering the horrific event that was the Holocaust, raising awareness to ensure nothing like that happens again.

Woolsery Primary School visit:

On January the 24th, members of our Student Leadership Team visited Woolsery Primary School to speak to a class of year 5 and 6 children about their upcoming transition into secondary school. The visit was a success, with the children asking lots of questions and discussing which careers they like the look of with the sixth form students. This was part of our outreach to a number of local primary schools; we have already been to West Croft and Appledore, and there is an upcoming visit to St Mar- garet’s Junior School - Natalie Cole SF07

National apprenticeship show:

On the 30th January A group of 9 Year 12s went to the National Apprenticeship show at Westpoint in Exeter. This show was full of examples of the careers that an apprenticeship can lead to, from building jet engines to working in catering. The range on offer was helpful and gave insight into the opportunities available through apprenticeships. Throughout the hour we spent there, many different companies gave demonstrations, including a team building game led by the Army, an RAF virtual reality experience and a lesson on how to make different pastries. However, there were a limited number of apprenticeships that were post-18 education focused, and the show was much more post-16 education based. The information some groups were giving out was very limited but I feel that the stalls I went to have given me enough information to make an informed decision about my future - Francis Steptoe SF06

Expressive Arts

On Sunday 21 January, Art and Photography exam students took part in a very special animation workshop with Bristol based artist Emma Hughes. As part of a collaboration between Bideford College Library, the Expressive Arts faculty and Libraries Unlimited the students spent the day working on stop motion animation courtesy of Arts Council funding.

The animations, which explore our favourite childhood stories and fairy tales, will be used as an art installation at Bideford Library from the 18 February.

The quality of work was exceptional. Well done to Jack Burnett, Izzy Moule, Danny Cashmore, Kyle Ash, Liberty Kennedy and Lauren Owen–Jeffery.

The Maths Challenge takes place each year across the UK with students that score highly being invited to further rounds. It is a great opportunity to try some different maths problems and see how your mathematical mind is de- veloping, below are the thoughts of one Year 10 student who took part.

On Thursday 7th February, around 20 Bideford College students between Year 9-11 took part in the UK Maths Chal- lenge. We had to answer 26 multiple choice questions that increased in difficulty, however the questions were not similar to the GCSE paper. They required us to think logically and use all the maths skills accumulated throughout school life. Everyone expected to be challenged, but we couldn’t prepare for the difficulty of this challenge. It really pushed our brains to think thoroughly about the answers, because if they were wrong, points were deducted. After the hour long test was up, we breathed a sigh of relief, but we had all enjoyed something a bit different to the ‘average’ maths test.

On Monday 11th March, the science department with the help of some of the Sixth Form biologists, hosted 60 Year 6 students from St Mary’s C of E school who had been studying the human heart and circulatory system. The Sixth Formers guided small groups through a pig heart dissection workshop, showing them the internal structures of a heart and how it functions. The Year 6 students got to feel the different tissues and see what a heart looks like up close.

The Music Department were pleased to host the Bideford Learning Community Singing Festival in March, in the Devon Hall. This featured choirs from our feeder primary schools and the Transition choir, which is made up of Year 5 and 6 students and our Bideford College Choir BIDEbelles. All the children did a lot of work to prepare for the concert and the quality of the performances were testa- ment to that. Bideford College students in the BIDEband and the BIDEbelles were excited to be collaborating on several pieces with the primary school children including music from the opera Carmen and Ed Sheehan’s ‘What do I know’. Congratulations to all those who took part and we look forward to hosting the event again next year.

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 17 Expressive Arts - St Ives Residential

Our second annual trip to St Ives, saw us setting off in high winds, but grateful for the lack of snow disruption seen the previ- ous week. Once again staying at the fantastic Cohort hostel in St Ives, the hostel is based in the town, so all galleries are within walking distance.

Our first visit on Saturday morning was across the West Penwith peninsula to Penlee House in Penzance, where they house a vast collection of paintings by the Newlyn School of painters. Students were introduced to the work of Stanhope Forbes and his fellow artists, who were renowned for their ‘En Plain Air’ paintings, square brush marks and paintings of ordinary people and scenes, from the 1880-1940s. Their work was in stark contrast to the paintings depicting biblical scenes that were in great demand at the end of the 1800s. Many local characters can be seen throughout the paintings as locals were paid as painters’ models to help supplement their income.

Saturday afternoon we were back in St Ives for a whistle stop tour of the Leach pottery, learning about the influences of Jap- anese firing and hand decoration. Traditional Leach pottery is displayed against more contemporary ceramic artists and many of our students were drawn to the work of Sarah Dunstan, who uses modern glazes and slab work to create the illu- sion of metal work.

Sunday was a day to immerse ourselves in art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Our day began at the Barbara Hepworth Muse- um, with a talk and workshop on contemporary sculpture, based on the work of one of the most famous female British sculptors of the 20th Century. Students were engaged in thought provoking discussions and processes to support and enrich their learning at A level.

The afternoon session was based at the Tate St Ives, providing students with opportunities of first hand research for their ESA (exam unit) and inspiration for their Personal Investigations. Viewing original works by international artist such as Pablo Picasso and more locally inspired artists such as Peter Lanyon. The temporary exhibition space was retrospective of work by the Egyptian artists Anna Boghiguian, a contemporary artists who uses the narrative of storytelling and installation pieces to address global concerns through, painting, sculpture and collage.

U14 beat Pilton 2-0 U14 Lost to Braunton 1-2 U16 lost to Pilton 1-4 U16 Beat Braunton 2-1

The Year 7/8 girls team (playing against Year 8/9s) beat Pilton 2-0 with both goals scored by Sophie Stevens. They then lost 2- 1 against Braunton despite going up 1-0 due to a Lily Haste goal near the end of the game. Olivia Stevenson was excellent in goal making several key saves. The Year 10/11 team lost to Pilton 4-1 but then beat Braunton 2-1 with Keira Connolly (who usually plays in goal) scoring the winner. Both teams did exceptionally well considering the weather which was the coldest, windiest and wettest conditions they will probably ever have to play in.

Cross Country Championships At the Devon schools’ cross country championships at Stover School Newton Abbot on Saturday 19 January, Bideford College had two students who achieved medal winning performances. Flynn Jennings took silver in the inter boys’ race and Fletcher Powe took bronze in the junior boys’ race. Adam Leworthy finished 6th and Sophie Land finished 8th and these 4 runners are very likely to be selected to represent Devon at the South West championships in Bath which is the key stepping stone to- wards selection for the Devon team for the national championships in Leeds. Please see update on page 24! Isobel Pink was 19th, Will Prouse 18th, Oliver Goldsworthy 22nd, Charlie Stevenson 45th, Louis Pimlott 37th and Jamie Milsom 12th in Devon. It was a great achievement to have 10 students from a school at the county championships and it will be fantastic if 4 are confirmed as being selected for Devon.

Congratulations to Julian Hayter in Year 8 who was one of only three U18s in the county nominated for the ‘Devon Tennis Junior Player of the Year’ and was invited to the Devon Awards Evening in Exeter. The competition was stiff and the winner had competed at National level, but it is a huge achievement.. Julian does also play crick- et for Devon, and was nominated for U12 Best Batsman last season. Julian’s older brother James Hayter was selected to play with the U15 Devon team in their cricket tour to South Africa in February. He had a good tour, performed well on the cricket front and the other experiences he had while out there – coaching children in the townships, going on safari, general sight-seeing on his days off has been life changing. Rugby—Triple Champions

Year 10 won their North Devon Schools’ league final against Park 24-7 at Bideford RFC which means that they have completed the treble! They are cup, league and 7 a-side champions.

Matt Lewis bossed the game from fly half but the first try was scored by Charlie Mugford. Charlie then raced over for a second try from a long pass by Sam Picillo which was converted from out wide by Matt and then Ollie Haste scored under the posts for an easy conversion by Matt.

Matt put the game beyond Park’s reach with a chip and chase which he collected to score. Louis Mathers and Matt stood out as men of the match but lots of the team stepped up and played their part in the victory.

Bradley Williams impressed when he came on to play winger, Toby Ayres, Brandon Taylor and Jack Parsons tack- led hard, Harvey Palmer and Ben Eves carried the ball well and Jacob Stevenson had an excellent game at full- back in attack and defence.

The trophy and medals were presented by the chairman of Bideford RFC.

Bideband are working on Miserlou by Dick Dale which is a real challenge for the guitarists in the band! Bidebelles are excited to be singing Youngblood by 5 Seconds of Summer and A Thousand Years from the Twilight films. Bidebelles will be hosting primary school singers in the Transition Troupe to collaborate on Rewrite the Stars from The Greatest Showman and Ghost by Ella Henderson for the Bideford Learning Community Singing Festival on Tuesday 26th March. Bideband will also be the house band for this event. If you would like to join Bideband we rehearse on Tuesday lunchtimes in E210 and Bidebelles rehearse from 3-4pm in E210 on Wednesdays. New for 2019! We now have a band practice room which can be booked out at lunchtimes and some after-schools. Lego Club every Wednesday takes place at lunchtime in the SEND department and it is attended by a large group of enthusiastic students. As well as being great fun, the group aims to promote and develop the students’ team work, social and communication skills.

On Learning Review Day, Lego Club organised a cake sale at school and raising well over a £100 to spend on Lego. We would like to thank all the students, parents and staff who contributed to this great result. In addition, Lego Club would also like to thank parents that have donated new Lego sets for us to use in this therapy.

The hour is split into two sessions, during the first of part of our session the students work together in teams, using Lego sets with instructions, with each student taking on a role, for example supplier, engineer or builder working together and communicating to complete the model. The second part encourages the students to develop their imagination through free building.

As well as the enjoyment of taking part, they are many benefits to taking part. As one of our parents told us ‘this has allowed my son to enjoy, access and develop his potential at school.’ As a school that believes in inclusion and the right of all children to exceed, their potential we are so thrilled to have had such success with this activity.

Our thirty-two Bronze and twenty- one Silver Duke of Edinburgh students are well on their way to completing their award. These students are currently volunteering within the community, completing physical recreation by participating in a range of sporting activities and are developing a variety of skills within the skills section. Stu- dents have also attended a number of classroom-based sessions to sharpen up their navigation and expedition skills. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an internationally recognised award and is held in high regards by universi- ties and many employers.

BRONZE:

On Saturday 9th March our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students completed a walk around Hartland where they had an opportunity to put their navigational skills to the test outside the classroom. All students showed real determination and excellent team work skills throughout the day completing a number of challenges en-route. This has hopefully given them a flavour of what is to come on their actual expedition and a chance to reflect on any areas that need to be improved before then.

The Ten Tors training season is almost finished. Our Year 10 students have made fantastic pro- gress and are currently refining their skills in preparation for the actual event. The training so far has enabled students to develop their navigation, camp craft and team work skills which will be necessary to be successful within this event.

They were given an opportunity last weekend to test their skills by competing in the Dartmoor Challenge. This is an event organised by Launceston Multi Academy Trust which is similar in for- mat and distance to the actual event. The three teams started the event at 8am on Saturday morning and walked all day covering between 17 and 20 miles. They then wild camped on Saturday night just south of Little Mis Tor where they were responsible for preparing their own evening meal and breakfast.

On Sunday they had a 4.30am wake up call to allow time to strike camp before setting off at 6am where they covered almost 14 miles. They all crossed the line mid-afternoon on Sunday in the sunshine to a round of applause and were presented with their certificate by Dr Ankers.

A fantastic effort by all!
