WEB# 54557 Wrap Around Porch Entry An Historic Treasure Designed by celebrated Stanford White of McKim Mead and White, and originally build in 1882-1883, this property has never before been on the open market in its 135 year history. As the paragon of “Seven Sisters” built for wealthy businessmen in the early 1880’s, tick hall was one of the seven summer “cottages” which today form a special gathering of private homes that together are listed as the Montauk Historical Association. Built for Alexander E. Orr and his family, the home was designed “The Orr House” in the nineteenth century. Living Room Fireplace Detail The Best Of Old And New A fire destroyed Tick Hall in 1997, but forensic architect James Hadley worked with descendants of the original McKim, Mead and White firm and used original hardware and window frames from the ashes to combine “forensic architecture” and the highest of today’s building standards to recreate the house exactly. Hundreds of photographs taken over the years were combined, measuring the relative height of people or dogs and the home’s details to lay out exact measurements, design details, and construction techniques to perfectly reproduce the original building, including worn spots in the door sills and the creak in the stairway. Fireplace tiles were replaced from Shropshire, , and the special woodworking knives were created to reproduce the original exterior single and interior paneling designs. But behind the beautiful paneled walls and ceilings, and the perfect reproduction, lurk modern amenities such as high speed internet and insulation. Although the house rarely needs it thanks to mild ocean breezes, central zoned heating and air conditioning control the temperature and humidity. Although everything about the Stanford White part of the house is indistinguishable from the 1883 original, a thoughtful addition designed by Nick Botta in 2012 allowed for a chef ’s kitchen with a screened entertaining porch downstairs and a screened sleeping porch upstairs, and looks inside and out as though it was part of the original.
