Nord Stern May 2017 13 Back In had been away from Porsches for a long time. As in, not The having one in my garage, but Istill in contact. Years ago I had moved up from a brand new 944 Saddle that I waited eight months on the waiting list to get, to a low Again mile 911SC after a long search. The 944 was nice, and I had tricked it out with some sixteen- inch wheels (!) and a Blaupunkt

stereo with the Beogram graphic

equalizer. In 1983 I thought I was rolling pretty strong, but My 944, nice, but . . . the early cars had a bothersome upgrades, CIS and airbox failures, and a “Topside” Text and photos by Jim Southwell vibration in the front end, and the car topped out at class win at the Nord Stern Afton Concours. But only 123 mph. Whaaa? I autocrossed it at the ’84 Parade at another 9k miles rolled up on the odometer. Family 2012 911 Turbo S Road America in a class of fifty-two cars, but had my obligations, work responsibilities, you name it, I spent eyes opened wide by all I saw around Appleton. There more time detailing it than driving it, and the weather had to be more. had to be perfect anyway. The Curse of the Garage After moving to Minnesota from the suburbs of Queen was working its power on me. A big career Chicago, I found a Weissach Edition SC at a small change loomed, and I sold it to an Anesthesiologist dealer in Hopkins named Sterling Imports. Two guys from Rochester. Maybe he could drive it as intended working from a small inventory, they had a 17k mile by the folks from Stuttgart. That was it, driven away in March, 1991. Funny thing about a Porsche though, for all their quirks, expensive repairs, and the naysayers, I couldn’t get the brand out of my mind. I continued to follow their racing successes, the model changes, and even the switch over to water-cooling. What were they thinking!? Well, maybe staying in business! Porsche Cars North America certainly had their ups and downs, and as a luxury brand their fortunes followed the US economy closely. The Sunday arrived a glorious day. Sunny and a bit warmer than the previous five days. Taylor and Adventure I packed our bags, put them in the funky green and headed to the track. He set his own hours, learned to stay away from pub- crawling, and has met all sorts of interesting people, like me! It’s the people, he said … yeah, really, I’m not kidding. I’ve read about how literally all the major automotive manufacturers are in the process of aligning themselves with one, or more, travel disruptor like Uber . They see themselves in a race to stay viable, against the new-idea upstarts that seem to pop up in sets of waves, ready to break ashore with a market capitalization that dwarfs their manufacturing cohorts.
