The plot of a detective story is based on the assumption that once the facts are discovered, the truth will come out and justice will be served. This thesis explores the interaction between truth and justice in Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone and Charles Dickens’s Bleak House. While investigations may reveal the truth, this does not always lead to justice. Authors can uphold or deviate from traditional norms to reinforce or undermine the expectation that justice will be served. Keffeler 1 Truth and Justice in The Moonstone and Bleak House Introduction Victorians placed a high value on honesty. The cultural norm of the period was that people were expected to tell the truth (Kucich 6). There are many references by people such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and W. E. H. Lecky about how Victorians took pride in being candid and sincere. This emphasis on honesty led to moral values that placed great importance on the truth (Kucich 8). -

Wells in A Red Record and Claude McKay in his poem “If We Must Die,” to frame the racial struggles of their particular culture and time. These cross-cultural resources establish a wider, contextual stage from which to understand the complex atmosphere of race and violence out of which the transatlantic racial riots of 1919 emerged. -

Smith, PhD, Associate Professor, English ii Copyright © by Rebecca Wigginton 2014 iii TWILIGHT STATES: SLEEPWALKING, LIMINAL CONSCIOUSNESS, AND SENSATIONAL SELFHOOD IN VICTORIAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE Rebecca Wigginton, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2014 Twilight States: Sleepwalking, Liminal Consciousness, and Sensational Selfhood in Victorian Literature and Culture argues that sleepwalking was everywhere in nineteenth-century culture, both as a topic for scientific, legal, and public debate, but also as a potent symbol in the Victorian imagination that informed literature and art. Furthermore, the nineteenth-century interest in the somnambulist was provoked by what the figure represented and revealed to the Victorians: namely, themselves. The sleepwalker represented the hidden potential within the self for either greatness or deviance, or, more mundanely, simply a fuller existence than consciousness has an awareness of. Sleepwalking writ large the multi-layered self at a time when the self—by psychiatry and society at large—was being accepted as increasingly multivalent. -

ABSTRACT Medicine and Medical Authority in Three Nineteenth-Century Novels Rachel S. Smith, M.A. Mentor: James E. Barcus, Ph.D. Three popular novels that span the nineteenth century—Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone, and Catharine Maria Sedgwick’s Hope Leslie—join then-contemporary conversations about medical reform. The novels explore the ethical ambiguities inherent in medical practice in the nineteenth century and question the nature of medical authority. In general, all three novels share a distrust of established medicine. In Hope Leslie, traditional, European medicine is denigrated and shown to be less efficacious than Native American medicine. This novel can be considered to be an argument for a national (American) medical system. In The Moonstone, the medical community’s indiscriminate use of opium is criticized. Ubiquitous opium-based preparations, like laudanum, are treated as ethically ambiguous and potentially dangerous. In Stoker’s Dracula, a “metaphysician” who treats both the body and soul is the most effective medical authority when dealing with nineteenth-century ailments that stubbornly retain moral associations. Racial Hybridity and Victorian Nationalism: 1850-1901 by Alisha Renee Walters A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy English Department University of Toronto © Copyright by Alisha Renee Walters 2014 Racial Hybridity and Victorian Nationalism: 1850-1901 Alisha Renee Walters Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This dissertation uniquely uncovers how fictional depictions of the racial hybrid came to impact how facets of British identity were imagined in the nineteenth century. The burgeoning Victorian science of racialism, which was obsessed with ideas of racial hybridity, was allied closely to theories of British national identity in the nineteenth century. This thesis scrutinises the intertwined development of the scientific discourse of racial hybridity, on the one hand, and the emergence of a modern idea of heterogeneous Britishness, on the other, during the Victorian era. I specifically investigate the relationship between fiction and scientific ideologies of race mixing, and I position the novel as an active contributor to a broader discussion regarding “in-between” modalities of British identity. In this project, I place the Victorian racial hybrid—sometimes called the “mulatto,” or the “half-caste,” and so on—as she or he appears in literature into a history of the construction of aspects of Victorian identity. I begin by examining the complex, and often antithetical, sets of emotive responses that Victorian fiction stages in reaction to hybridized difference. As I read works by Dinah Craik, Wilkie Collins, Rudyard Kipling, and others, I explore how descriptions of bodily hybridity intersect with imaginings of British nationalism, which was viewed frequently as a more complex identificatory category in the context of the empire. -

Although they had previously considered themselves superior to colonial peoples in all ways, Westerners watched helplessly as their bodies withered in tropical climes with unknown conditions. Firmly ensconced in their societal role as healers and conquerors of disease, European doctors found that their techniques were useless against these new threats. The weakening of the medical canon, once a symbol of progress for all of Western civilization, instilled doubt in the body politic of colonial powers like Great Britain. First gaining popularity in the mid-nineteenth century, detective fiction introduced a new type of specialist character who can overcome foreign threats using new types of knowledge. This new brand of character uses methods that mirror the medical practices of pathologization and diagnosis chronicled by Michel Foucault in The Birth of the Clinic. Highlighting Foucauldian concepts and instances of medical anthropology, this paper seeks to track the development of the specialist in detective fiction from the mid- to late-nineteenth century. -
