EARLY HISTORY OF UNITY ON THE BAY Written by Andrew Melick, Historian / Writer INTRODUCTION Unity’s Third Principle states, “We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in mind.” The evidence of this truth is a common thread that runs throughout the history of Unity on the Bay, the origin of which can Be traced Back to OctoBer 1926 and a thought held in mind by a 52-year-old widow in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was national news that the fledgling city of Miami, Florida had Been demolished By a devastating hurricane. Residents were fleeing in droves; in fact, a full third of the population eventually left town. The Miamians who remained were hurting, and Unity’s message of God’s healing light and love were words they desperately needed to hear. May Cornell StoiBer, the Cincinnati widow, said, “I felt it a call and sold what I had to Begin a Unity Center there.” Her thought Became reality on New Year’s Day 1927, when a Unity Center of Practical Christianity opened in downtown Miami. At every suBsequent turn in its history, it was again thoughts held in mind that led to the creation of what we know today as Unity on the Bay. Every story has a Backstory, however, and in order to put Unity’s establishment and growth in Miami in context, there are three other stories which must Be told first: the emergence of the city of Miami; the concurrent emergence of the Unity movement; and the early life of May Cornell StoiBer. -

ITEM 6 HISTORIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION BOARD STAFF REPORT NAME 8DA11 / Dupont Archaeological Conservation Area ADDRESS 300 SE 3 Street PROJECT DESCRIPTION Preliminary evaluation of data to determine conformance with City of Miami Preservation Ordinance requirements for local designation of 300 SE 3 Street as an historic and archaeological site; if appropriate, directing the Planning Department to prepare a designation report PREFACE It is essential to note that until archaeological excavations are concluded and artifact analysis and technical report production is completed by the project archaeologist, the significance of the parcel at 300 SE 3 Street (hereinafter referred to as “the Site”) can only be understood as it relates to the historical record, to previous technical archaeological reports produced for adjacent properties, and the preliminary findings on the Site itself. Due to the in-progress nature of archaeological study at the Site, official interpretation of the exact archaeological significance of the Site may evolve. ANALYSIS The parcel at 300 SE 3 Street (hereinafter referred to as “the Site”) is located on Miami’s prehistoric shoreline, where the Miami River once met Biscayne Bay. The Site has always been prime real estate in Miami. Archaeological data obtained from adjacent sites indicate that Native American settlement at the site dates back approximately 2,000 years. The first written accounts of Spanish explorers in South Florida from the early 1500s note that a Tequesta village was located at the mouth of the Miami River, and that it was one of the largest Native American settlements in South Florida. In the historic record, accounts have been made that the Site or the immediately adjacent areas hosted 16th and 17th century Spanish missions and an 18th-century plantation. -

Southern's Royal Palm
Southern’s Royal Palm Southern’s Royal Palm The Royal Palm was one of the earliest named passenger trains to serve the Midwest-to-Florida market. From the beginning the Southern provided top-notch service with the train and while it predominantly operated most of the trip on home rails, south of Jacksonville, Florida the Florida East Coast carried the Palm to Miami. The earliest version of the train always carried run-through sleepers of the New York Central. However, to keep up with demand the Southern also started a seasonal version of the train known as the New Royal Palm. Despite being streamlined the seasonal train had a short lifespan and was discontinued after only a few years of service. The original train carried on within the Southern's fleet for many years although throughout the 1960s it was slowly truncated and saw services reduced. By the time the train was discontinued just a little over a year before Amtrak began it is essentially a coach-only affair. The Southern's Palm has a history which dates back to November 1913 and even during these earliest days of wooden cars and steam locomotives the train operated with, as mentioned above, run through equipment owned by the NYC (coming from such cities as Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Cleveland, and Cincinnati) and worked in conjunction with the FEC to reach Miami. In the 1920s the train was upgraded with heavyweight cars and sleepers and continued to maintain top level service for Florida travelers. Interestingly, however, during the 1930s and early 1940s when the streamliner era was getting into full swing the Royal Palm maintained its heavyweight status and steam power. -

South Florida East Coast Corridor FINAL ALTERNATIVES ANALYSIS REPORT October 2011 Federal Aid No. FTAX004 FTA Grant No. FL-90-X372-07 FM No. 417031-1-22-01 Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties, Florida Contract: C-8F66 2 SFECCTA Alternatives Analysis Report SOUTH FLORIDA EAST COAST CORRIDOR TRANSIT ANALYSIS Lead Agencies: Florida Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration Title of the Proposed Action: South Florida East Coast Corridor Transit Analysis ABSTRACT: This report documents the development and analysis of alternatives for implementing reliable, high quality transit in the 85-mile Florida East Coast corridor located in southeast Florida. The purpose of the project is to increase transit options for travel in southeast Florida, support the Eastward Ho! Initiative of the counties in the region, encourage redevelopment and economic growth in the coastal cities, and supplement the existing highway network. These goals were developed in cooperation with the counties, cities, metropolitan planning organizations, regional planning organizations, civic and business organizations, and the general public. The study has proceeded in two phases. The first phase led to the development of modally generic alternatives that were refined into four, specific modal alternatives in Phase 2, which is the subject of this report. These four alternatives: TSM, BRT, Integrated Rail “DMU”, and Integrated Rail “Push- Pull,” were defined and compared against both a No Build alternative and against each other. Each of these alternatives incorporates new transit service along the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) cor- ridor with existing transit service operated by each of the three counties in the region (Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade) and Tri-Rail. -

5 The Birth of the City of Miami by Larry Wiggins Just over one hundred years ago, in 1895, three stubborn vision- aries came together to create Miami and, in doing so, open all of then-pristine South Florida to development. The Tuttle and Brickell families possessed land. Henry M. Flagler owned a railroad and possessed the capital to transform the land from a wilderness into a city. The partnership between them was at times adversarial, the consequences sometimes disappointing, but the resulting Magic City would, over the next century, grow into something greater than they could have ever imagined. The Brickell family, consisting of William, his wife Mary, and eight adult children ranging in age from 18 to 38, lived on the south bank of the mouth of the Miami River where they operated a trading post and post office. They arrived in 1871 from Cleveland and pur- chased a vast stretch of land that extended from the banks of the river south to near today's Coconut Grove. They also owned prop- erty on the north side of the New River in today's Fort Lauderdale.' Julia Tuttle and her children, Harry and Fanny, lived across the river from the Brickells. Tuttle, who came to Miami in 1891 after purchasing a tract of 640 acres of land on the north bank of the Miami River, was also from Cleveland. Tuttle's husband, Frederick, died in 1886, and she decided to move to South Florida due to what was described as the "delicate health" of her children. Tuttle had seen the area in 1875, at the age of twenty-six, when she visited her father, Ephraim Sturtevant, who homesteaded in the area of today's Larry Wiggins is the Controllerfor the South Dade News Leader, a news- paper in Homestead, where he has been employed for 17 years. -

'[eIuest'^: Miami: 1896 to 1900 By RUBY LEACH CARSON While the founding of the city of Miami in the year 1896 was the ultimate result of several national trends, the one connected directly with the development of the Florida east coast southward to Miami was the tourist rush of the eighties. Florida in the eighties was rediscovered. While many "unreconstructed" Floridians of the decade referred to this influx of northerners as "the second Yankee invasion", (the Union Army invasion of the sixties having been the first), they nevertheless rejoiced in the recognition which the state's warm winter climate was receiving. Not only invalids, but vacationists and wealthy pleasure-seekers were coming in increas- ing numbers. This trend brought the Standard Oil millionaire, Henry M. Flagler, on a honeymoon trip with his second wife during the winter of 1883-84. Most of their time was spent in St. Augustine, where Flagler was planning to make his home. Although he was only fifty-three at the time, he was thinking of retiring from activity with the Standard Oil Company. Flagler's biographer, Sidney Walter Martin, wrote that on this trip Flagler was impressed by the Florida East coast's need of a benefactor; but that the capitalist's only plan at the time was to return to St. Augusine the following year and begin building the luxurious Ponce de Leon Hotel. Work on this project in 1885 showed the need of better transportation, hence Flagler purchased and improved the narrow gauge railroad which ran between Jacksonville and St. Augustine. Thus began the development of the Flagler's railroad and resort hotels down the east coast of the Florida penin- sula. -
