The investigation of no department of physics has, within the last half century, been prosecuted with so much ardor, or con- tributed so many important and astonishing results to the general fund of human knowledge, or advanced so rapidly the progress of civih'zation, as the science to whose history we devote the present aiticle. Its grand discoveries have already incalculably increased the stores of medical philosophy, and its fruitful resources promise yet larger accessions for time to come. A science, therefore, whose pervading laws and invaluable disclosures seem to effect every co-ordinate branch of the pro- fession, may well, in the present day, challenge the attention of physicians; and a brief review of its past progress and present condition, may not, it is hoped, be unacceptable to the medical public. And yet it is a subject of sincere regret, that up to the middle of the last century, the reliable resources within the author's reach and upon which he is allowed to draw for his historical details, are so extremely meagre and unsatisfactory. -

Alawi 1 Hayla Alawi Pamela J Mackintosh Undergraduate Research Award May 8th, 2020 Jeju Island, the Three Clans Myth, and Women Divers: Female Importance in Jeju’s Cultural History Introduction Jeju1 Island, officially the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, lies 90 kilometers off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula and forms a province of South Korea. It is an interesting place, considered by many historians to be unique from mainland Korea before it was absorbed into the larger state, with fascinating cultural phenomena and a murky past. Although there is not much scholarship on the early history of Jeju2 and little in the written record about the island, it is possible to theorize what early Jeju cultural history may have looked like through a combined examination of the island’s mythology and modern-day culture. To gain a greater understanding of what early Jeju human culture may have looked like, I will examine the Myth of the Three Clans of Jeju Island, Jeju’s most prominent foundation myth. It is not the only foundation myth originating from the Korean Peninsula, but it is unique in that it features a key reversal between the roles of men and women in a narrative that is otherwise similar to other Korean foundation myths, the rest of which are found on mainland Korea. What is the definition of a whole grain? A whole grain food or flour must have 100% of the whole kernel (all of the bran, germ, and endosperm). The most common whole grains are whole wheat, rye, oats/oatmeal, brown rice, wild rice, corn/ cornmeal/popcorn, buckwheat, and barley. For the more adventuresome the grains growing in popularity are teff, triticale, amaranth, millet, and quinoa. Read Full License Page 1/34 Abstract Background The Miao, Yi and Lisu ethnic groups all have traditional medicinal knowledge, and the unique climate and topography of Yanbian County make it rich in medicinal plants. So the exchange, collision and integration of medical cultures of ethnic minorities in Yanbian County have research signicance. The study compared and analyzed the similarities and differences in the traditional medicinal usage of the Miao, Yi and Lisu ethnic groups in Yanbian, to provide the basis for the traditional medicinal culture and characteristics of the three medical systems in southwest China. Methods 36 sample plots were selected in this study and 5 sample quadrats were randomly set up in each plot to collect specimens. -

Henry C. Lu. The full title of Nei Jing is called Huang Di Nei Jing, which may be translated as the Yellow Emperor’s Classics of Internal Medicine. Two separate books named Su Wen and Ling Shu respectively make up the Nei Jing, both contain eighty-one chapters, with two chapters of Su Wen missing (72 and 73) and subsequently added to it. The book called Ling Shu means “the Axis of the Divine Soul”, it was intended to be a fully comprehensive discussion on traditional Chinese medicine. Su Wen may be translated as “the Classics of Dialogues Concerning Internal Medicine”. The position of Nei Jing in traditional Chinese medicine may be compared to that of Plato’s Republic in Western philosophy and that of Shakespeare in English literature, for the good reason that the classics in question had, since its first publication, become the most authoritative guidance for the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. -

The Tibetans in the Making Barley Cultivation & Cultural Representations Yannick LAURENT (Oxford) Introduction1 he Tibet-Qinghai plateau is one of the highest environments on the planet. It comprises an area of approximately 2.5 mil- T lion square kilometres with an average elevation exceeding 4000 metres above sea level (masl). The Tibetan plateau permits only a narrow range of productive activities. It is estimated that about 1% of the plateau is able to sustain farming practices.2 Today, fields of barley are grown everywhere from the alpine steppes of western Ti- bet to the hilly grasslands and forested provinces of Amdo and Kham in the east, from the large and temperate alluvial plains of the Tibetan heartland to the terrace fields of highland Nepal. In these harsh cli- matic and topographical conditions, where resources are distributed asymmetrically, human adaptation was rendered possible by a skilful exploitation of pastoralism and agriculture. As a result, farmers and nomads have always constituted the backbone of Tibetan civilization. Highland barley is a six-rowed naked (i.e., hulless) barley with a spring phenotype. It is particularly suited for harsh environments with extremely high altitudes. It is sown in the spring around the month of April. After a short period of dormancy and germination the crop is generally harvested in August-September. A six-rowed naked barley with a winter habit is also cultivated in lower regions subject to mild winter conditions. It is frost resistant and benefits from a longer period of dormancy. It is usually sown in autumn and ripens in late spring. -

Various combinations of outgroups were assessed for their suitability and the effects of long branches and outgroups on tree topology were examined using RASA 2.4 prior to conducting phylogenetic analyses. RASA identified several potentially problematic taxa having long branches in individual data sets that may have obscured phylogenetic signal, but when data sets were combined RASA no longer detected long branch problems. tRASA provides a more conservative measurement for phylogenetic signal than the PTP and skewness tests. The separate matK and rbcL sequence data sets were measured as the chloroplast DNA containing phylogenetic signal by RASA, but PTP and skewness tests suggested the reverse. Nonetheless, the matK and rbcL sequence data sets suggested relationships within Cornales largely congruent with those suggested by the combined matK–rbcL sequence data set that contains significant phylogenetic signal as measured by tRASA, PTP, and skewness tests.
