Follow this one—she could lead you to some exciting places.” — Paste “There aren’t many buzzed-over young rockers with Smokey Robinson and NRBQ tunes floating around their heads, but Sarah Borges covers both on her third LP, and second with this band. ‘Stars’ shows off Borges’ friendly pop-rock attack and tosses in bits of twang, rockabilly and Fifties pop. Along with five covers are five originals, including the Joan Jett-esque “Do It for Free.” Some of the material sounds like the work of a skilled, if not terribly distinct, bar band. But thanks largely to Borges’ warm, perky voice, Stars is tuneful and unhip in a hip kinda way.” — Rolling Stone “Borges and her band, the Broken Singles, ripped into a version of Bob Dylan’s “Outlaw Blues” that was impressively reshaped, and had Borges standing on top of a bar stool in her St. Patrick’s Day party dress [they’re a] working rock-and-roll band intent on putting their all into their live show” — Philadelphia Inquirer “A modern-minded honky-tonker with a retro streak” — The New York Times “”Do It For Free”, Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles: Boston-based Borges busts out of her country-roots mold with this sassy guitar-driven rocker from The Stars Are Out.” — USA Today “Her willingness, and ability, to stretch [herself musically] make this Borges’ strongest album yet.” — Performing Songwriter Hanging with honeyhoney The US gets set for Katie Melua On tour with Gavin DeGraw: 5/2 San Diego, CA 4/15 Chicago, IL 5/3 Los Angeles, CA 4/16 Decatur, IL 4/17 Columbus, OH 5/5 San Francisco, CA 4/19 Manchester, NH 5/7 Portland, OR 4/20 New York, NY 5/9 Seattle, WA 4/21 Harrisburg, PA 5/11 Minneapolis, MN 4/22 Philadelphia, PA 4/24 Boston, MA 5/12 Chicago, IL (SOLD OUT) 4/25 Reading, PA 5/26 Northampton, MA 4/26 Alexandria, VA 5/27 Boston, MA 4/28 Richmond, VA 5/28 New York, NY 4/29 Knoxville, TN 5/1 Louisville, KY 5/30 Philadelphia, PA 5/3 Charlotte, NC 5/31 Alexandria, VA 5/4 Nashville, TN 6/1 Annapolis, MD 5/5 Atlanta, GA 6/4 Atlanta, GA 5/7 Jacksonville, FL 5/8 Tampa, FL 6/5 Nashville, TN Yusuf sales take off in anticipation of roadsinger release roadsinger Tea For The Tillerman Teaser and The Firecat Huge iTunes pre-sales +118% this week +89% this week For up-to-the-minute AAA news... CONDICIÓN (if … won´t) Moonshadow Moonshadow aatt SStteevveennss YYuussuuff IIssllaamm Cat Stevens was one of the 1970's most popular musical artists. With a string of hit records and sold-out concerts he rocketed to superstardom. His album `Tea For The Tillerman´ is considered to be one of the best of its genre and his name is still a household word. So what happened to him? Why did he leave pop stardom behind? What is he doing now? Cat Stevens was born Stephen Demetre Georgiou on lyJu 21st, 1948 to a Greek Cypriot father and Swedish mother. In the late 60's he had a string of hit records in the UK and he later repeated his success throughout the world with a number of top selling albums including "Tea For The Tillerman" and "Teaser And The Firecat." In 1977 Cat Stevens embraced Islam and became a Muslim. Two years later he changed his name to Yusuf Islam and left the music business as Cat Stevens forever. Why did he become a Muslim? In the late 70's Cat was introduced to Islam by hisbrother David Gordon, who gave him a copy of the Qur'an -the holy book of the Muslims. Cat was immediately impressed by the religion and ultimately adopted it. He later changed his name to Yusuf Islam. He stopped making music because he felt that the life of a pop star was incompatible with the life of a Muslim.

  • The Transformative Power and Influence of American Popular Music Lyrics During the Vietnam War in the Sixties and Seventies
Proceedings of The National Conference On Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2020 Montana State University, Bozeman MT March 26-28, 2020 The Transformative Power and Influence of American Popular Music Lyrics During the Vietnam War in the Sixties and Seventies Beatrix Lever Interdisciplinary Studies Montana State University 100 Culbertson Hall Bozeman, Montana 59717 USA Faculty Advisor: Dr. Ilse-Mari Lee Abstract The transformative power and influence of popular music lyrics amid social movements, specifically throughout the Vietnam War with the rise of the counterculture movement in the United States, has too often been dismissed by political science scholars. The implications of lyrics and the extent to which popular artists of the Vietnam War era were referencing a particular cause proves the role that popular music can play within social movements. This research project attempts to make a unique contribution to the niche area of inquiry with an analysis of the impact of lyrics as a tool for imposing social change. The overarching theme expected to stand out among the popular music of this time is one of rebellion and change. Research includes an in-depth empirical analysis of music from the period of interest, readings, and application of scholarly articles pertaining to the influence of popular music as well as the political climate during the Vietnam War, including interpretations of lyrics based on common knowledge and personal experience engaging with the popular music of the era. Keywords: Vietnam War, Music, Social Movements 1. Introduction Over the course of the 2019-2020 academic year, I studied the value of using popular music as a vessel for meaning.

Geburtstag. Geburtstag geladen. The title's a bit of a misnomer: this 36-minute document, taped at KCET Studios in Los Angeles on June 8, 1971, includes only seven songs from Stevens's breakout album. Moonshadow, from the subsequent Teaser and the Firecat, both opens the DVD and closes it in the form of a cartoon. The animated short, however, appears in far superior quality on the live Majikat, released in 2004. But that's it for the quibbling. This is a wonderfully intimate little performance before a small, strangely subdued, audience sitting at the Cat's feet. Accompanied only by guitarist Alun Davies and bassist Larry Steele, Stevens delivers stripped-down (make that further stripped-down) selections from the hit album, then less than seven months old. There's something to be said for unadorned recordings that simply capture the moment, without the weight of historical perspective or the foreshadowing of future milestones.
