Aer His resurrecon from the dead, Christ appeared to his disciples for forty days and then ascended into heaven where he is "seated at the right hand of the Father." Years ago on a retreat, a Benedicne monk encouraged me to "try and imagine the joy Jesus felt when he ascended to the Father." I found that insight helpful both during the retreat and every year when we celebrate this feast. Spend some me today prayerfully imagining the joy Jesus experienced when he ascended to His Father in heavenly glory. Then ask Jesus for the gi of that same joy in your heart and in the hearts of people you love. ST. JOHN VIANNEY I menoned last week that a major relic of St. John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests, will be at Marytown on Monday, June 3. I am planning to go there for a period of me of prayer, asking his intercession for me and for a whole list of priests. St. John Vianney was born May 8, 1786 and died on August 4, 1859. He lived in France, serving as the parish priest in the village of Ars. St. John Vianney is renowned for his charity, prayerfulness and holiness as he encouraged people in Ars to become renewed in their Catholic faith. A large part of his ministry was hearing confessions; he oen spent a whole day listening to people and absolving their sins in the Sacrament of Penance. Please join me in asking St. John to pray for all parish priests and especially for young men to respond to the Lord's call to become priests. RUMMAGE SALE RUMBLINGS Once again St. Raphael will host a rummage sale this week on our church grounds, both in the Fellowship Hall and in the white tent in the parking lot. Please spread the word and invite people to come to our rummage sale; there are some incredible bargains, including some very good furniture this year. Thanks to our volunteers who have worked so hard pung everything in order. The proceeds will help our parish with capital needs and programs. Detailed informaon is in this bullen on page 4. AN ENJOYABLE EVENING Last Thursday's presentaon by art historian Rebecca Long on the art of El Greco was very well received. Fiy people aended the presentaon, and several people requested more programs like this in the future. I am working now on seng up several concerts on Sunday aernoons in our church for the fall and winter. Please let me know if you have any suggesons or ideas. BE CAREFUL ABOUT POSSIBLE SCAMS Lately there have been people receiving false emails purporng to be sent by members of Catholic parish staffs, including me. The people who are pung on this hoax gain access to email informaon by reading parish bullens and then create similar email addresses in order to deceive the recipient. Frequently these false communicaons are brief and usually include a request for gi cards, etc. If you receive an email such as this that does not seem right, you can verify what is a genuine email from St. Raphael by checking with the office. Many are even taking over parishes again. What some didn't see coming was the skyrockeng health and rerement costs for our over two hundred elderly priests. The first of these is the apparition of 11 February 1858, when Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old peasant girl, admitted to her mother that a "lady" spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle (a mile from the town) while she was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend.[1] Similar appearances of the "lady" were reported on seventeen further occasions that year. Bernadette Soubirous was later canonized as a Saint, and Roman Catholics and some Protestants believe her apparitions have been validated by the overwhelming popularity and testament of healings claimed to have taken place at the Lourdes water spring. In 1862, Pope Pius IX authorized Bishop Bertrand-Sévère Laurence to permit the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes. This Marian title, Our Lady of Lourdes, has been widely copied and reproduced, often displayed in shrines or homes, most notably in garden landscapes.

This morning is such a moment. We resign ourselves to the worst, and suddenly life turns around. So come this Easter morning, to be shaken from your conviction that nothing can change your situation. Come if you look at the world and feel overwhelmed by its chaos, or disillusioned by its promises. On this morning we remember how Mary went to anoint a corpse, and was greeted by a Savior. Come to worship prepared to see your life and the world through new eyes. For Christ is risen, Christ is risen indeed.
