CORRESPONDENCEFORTHETERRACESTANDARD The Mail Bag Watch out in Alberta Dear Sir: I’m writing to inform all the young men and gals that have gone to Alberta to work. My son does seasonal work in the oil fields there. He has no permanent Alberta ad- dress as he lives in canips/motels in both B.C. and Al- berta. He comes back to Terrace periodically during the year on down time and works at ;i local fishing lodge. He can’t claim income tax in Alberta since he isn’t there long enough. He isn’t eligible for “Ralphie Bucks” He purchased a new vehicle here in Terrace in October and it was totalled 47 days after owning it. There were no drugs/alcohol involved in the accident it was a no fault accident. He received severe facial injuries and was off work for a while. He is now told by ICBC that he wasn‘t insured prop- erly. He bought the insurance here in Terrace to return back to Alberta to see if he had work in the oil fields, for the winter months. Hc was in Alberta exactly 36 days when the accident happcned. The problem was that a person has to change insurance within 60 days of moving lo another province. My son was under that limit. He moved in and out of work camps in B.C.as well as Alberta. But his paycheques came from Alberta. And because he could not prove he wasn’t in Al- berta for under 60 days, ICBC regarded him asPeing in Alberta for over that length of time. So he was considered not insured properly. He now has to pay ICBC thousands of dollars and doesn’t get paid for loss of wage or medical to fix his face. My warning is that people buying insurance should ask a lot of questions to make sure the insurance you are buy- ing is the policy you need. And that’s particularly the case for people doing seasonal work who travel back and forth YVONNE Nielsen examines a replica of the human brain. The Flower of a Passionate Gardener Good roses take time and a little research, roses are much different from most garden shrubs, a rose left unattended is a rose gone bad. Unlike juniper, cedar, hydrangeas, azaleas, and many other hardy trees or shrubs that can be left to their own devices, providing they have the bear necessities, and will one day become beautiful specimens in most any landscape, a nice rose bush takes more effort. Roses are deserving of more than a second glance they are something to be proud of, not because it's so hard to do but because it takes a lot of time compared other trees or shrubs. A rose gardener is a passionate gardener, a person that gardens for the love of gardening. Perhaps this is why the Rose is a romantic flower, a token of love. Although growing good roses doesn't just happen on their own you donY need to be a horticulturalist either, they just need attention. QUEzADADUSTIN COM~NITY638-7283 ii I,

RIP, Kip had a dream about a cougar recently. I was in the woods near MK Bay Marina, I recognized the sandy soil and prickly pines. I was low to Ithe ground and stopped in fear when I saw’its golden flank. Years ago, over a dozen, a kitten emerged from under our shed in the back yard. She was part-Sia- mese, alovely small thing with pink paws and nose. and her fur was mauve with beige and white. A tiny, gorgeous creature. As she had a flea collar on, we knew someone out there loved her, so we put ads in the paper and informed the local shelter. Three hopeful women came by to see her so I caught her and held her up at the front door. “No. no, it’s not her,” each said, as my growing elation, held in check, matched their disappointment. Because of course I fell in love. We named the skinny little cat “Herc” - shoa for Hercules (to impart strength) or after Hercule Undivided attention Poirot, as she was a mystery.
