Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here. Jazz Series Concert Features Saxophonist Donny McCaslin Posted on: February 15th, 2011 by Rick Peterson Critically acclaimed saxophonist and composer Donny McCaslin showcases his “roof-raising” talents Friday, February 25 at 8 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Chapel as part of the 2010-11 Lawrence University Jazz Series. McCaslin will be joined by the Lawrence Brass. Donny McCaslin “Donny McCaslin definitely belongs in any discussion of top jazz saxophonists like Chris Potter and others,” said tubist Marty Erickson, a member of the Lawrence Brass. “He is very comfortable playing hard funk and a kind of high-energy post- bebop, but he also can render a ballad with the best of them.” One of the pieces The Lawrence Brass will perform with McCaslin will be from his 2009 CD “Declarations,” which was ranked 12th on a list of favorite jazz CDs of 2009 by the website The Jazz Spectrum. Described by Jazz Times as a “versatile” musician who plays with a “fluidity and grace,” McCaslin first picked up the tenor saxophone at the age of 12 and!participated in the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival’s California All-Star band while still in high school. -

Following in the steps of two of the previous masters of the vibraphone Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo, Jackson succeeded in transferring the bebop idiom to his instrument, becoming one of the greatest vibraphonists in the bop style. Jackson used two mallets, almost treating the vibraphone as a single-line instrument. His playing is marked by his adept skills, but also laced with blues phrases that refer to his musical upbringing in the church.1 He is universally recognized as a definitive interpreter of the blues. As a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ), he was required to read and memorize the arrangements written by John Lewis. These arrangements incorporated many classical materials with jazz, which is known as third stream. Playing these arrangements inspired Jackson to find a voice beyond the bebop idiom.2 Some of his significant works are “Bags and Trane”, “Sunflower” and “The Prophet Speaks.” Bobby Hutcherson Studying piano briefly with his mother at an early age provided Bobby Hutcherson (1941-2016, LA) with a foundation in harmony. 1 The PIANO of EARL RUDOLPH POWELL “BUD” Solographers: James Accardi & Jan Evensmo Last update: June 3, 2020 2 Born: NYC. Sept. 27, 1924 Died: NYC. Aug. 1, 1966 Introduction: Oslo Jazz Circle was originally based on the swing era (with Chu Berry as the primary idol), but a heavy minority managed to achieve equally high status for bebop and other modern forms. Bud Powell was discovered early, and personally I bought my first Blue Note LPs as a teenager. Bud Powell also played in Metropol Jazzclub, Oslo, Sept. 24-27 with Bjørn Pedersen (b), Jon Christensen (dm). I wa s there and remember how he looked ahead with a glassy stare when playing, almost like he did not know where he was. But sometimes he looked at his watch to the right of the keyboard, and after 45 minutes he stopped abruptly, even if the tune was not finished! An unforgettable experience for all of us! History: From 1940 BP took part in informal jam sessions at Minton’s Playhouse, New York, where he came under the tutelage and protection of Thelonious Monk and contributed to the emerging bop style. By 1942-44, when he played in the band of Cootie Williams, he had already developed his individual style in most of its essentials. After sustaining a head injury during a racial incident in 1945, he suffered the first of many nervous collapses, which were to confine him to sanatoriums for much of his adult life. Thereafter, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he appeared intermittently in New York clubs with leading bop musicians or in his own trio. -
