First thanks must go to my supervisor, Pramit Chaudhuri. His patience, guidance, and keen eye for detail have been essential for the successful completion of this project. Each word in this dissertation has benefitted from his thoughtful consideration. He has consistently challenged me to think about literature in more creative and deeper ways, and this dissertation — to say nothing of my scholarly perspective as a whole — is much the better for it. I also thank Ayelet Haimson Lushkov. Apart from her characteristically insightful commentary on this project, I will always be thankful that she took me under her wing while I was a first-year graduate student and assured me that it was, in fact, okay to become a Latinist. Andrew Riggsby, Alison Keith, and Neil Coffee provided invaluable insights and feedback on this project. -

Thanks also to the other members of my dissertation committee—Susan Deans-Smith, Bruce Hunt, Neil Kamil, and María Portuondo—for sharing their time and insights with me on this project. In addition to those I have already mentioned, I have had the privilege of being exposed to a variety of different perspectives on history in the classroom, including in particular my classes with Abigail Lustig, Robert Olwell, Jim Sidbury, and Ann Twinam. I also appreciate the friendships and intellectual partnerships I have made with my colleagues in the history department at UT. Michael Schmidt has been a stimulating partner in countless conversations regarding far-ranging topics affecting our work and otherwise. -

PLACE-NAMES, CONQUEST, AND EMPIRE: SPANISH AND AMERINDIAN CONCEPTIONS OF PLACE IN THE NEW WORLD by GENE RHEA TUCKER Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON May 2011 Copyright © by Gene Rhea Tucker 2011 All Rights Reserved ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My first thank you is to Dr. Richard V. Francaviglia, who helped me hatch the idea that would lead to this dissertation. Ideas and sources were suggested by Drs. Dennis P. Reinhartz and David Buisseret. These three gentlemen, great cartographic scholars all, unfortunately all retired from UTA before the completion of my project. Thanks should, of course, be extended to the fine scholars of my current committee. They have aided me in ways they will never know: Drs. Douglas Richmond, John Garrigus, Imre Demhardt, and Kimberly Breuer. Without them, this dissertation would not exist. Other professors at UTA were instrumental in the long process of earning a doctorate, and it is necessary for me to thank these fine scholars: Drs. Thomas Adam, Steven G. Reinhardt, Robert Fairbanks, Christopher Morris, Sam W. Haynes, David Narrett, Stanley Palmer, and Joseph Bastien. All were an immense help at some point. Further thanks are due to the UTA history department staff, especially Robin Deeslie and Ami Keller. Kudos to the innumerable librarians, archivists, and student workers who do the grunt work of dealing with researchers. Special thanks to Ben Huseman, UTA‘s cartographic archivist, in this regard. Thanks also to my colleagues in the same Ph.D. -

Greining heimilda kynnir fjölbreyttar heimildir sem eiga uppruna sinn víða, frá Eystrasaltinu til eyja í Atlandshafi og meginlönd Skandinavíu. Í fyrsta hluta af tveimur á sér stað greinargóð umræða um hlutverk sjávarins í sögu og rannsókna á sviði PCRN. Á þessum grunni er nálgun ritgerðarinnar byggð, sem lítur til nýlegra vistfræðilegra hugmynda innan fræðasviðsins. Með notkun aðferða úr nýefnishyggju við rannsókn á sjónum opnast sá möguleiki að skoða hverskyns sambönd, hvort sem hlutaðeigendur eru mennsk, ómennsk eða ofur-mennsk. Þess konar sambönd eru ígrunduð í öðrum hluta ritgerðarinnar, sem skiptist síðan í þrjá hluta, hver þeirra með áherslu á ákveðna tegund heimilda: forn grísk-rómversk rit; efnisbundnar heimildir úr fornleifum og táknmyndafræði; og bókmenntir miðalda. -

Isaac Newton's Papers & Letters on Natural Philosophy and Related
/ )" ISAAC NEWTON’S & On Natural Philosophy and related documents Containing Newton’s contributions to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, his letter to Boyle about the cether, “De Natura Acidorum,” Newton’s letters to Bentley and the “Boyle Lectures” related to them, the first published biography of Newton, Halley’s publications about Newton’s “Principia,” &c. With explanatory prefaces by Marie Boas, Charles Coulston Gillispie, Thomas S. Kuhn, & Perry Miller. HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS Cambridge, Massachusetts '• 1958 © Copyright 1958 by the President and Fellows of Harvard College Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 58-5607 Printed in the United States of America V Preface S tu d en ts of intellectual history and the history of science need no reminder that the majestic figure of Isaac Newton dominates the 18th century. The “Age of Newton” must be studied in the works of Newton himself, as well as in the writings of his commentators and the scientific books and articles that either continued the investigations undertaken by Newton or ventured into new domains of knowledge which he had not explored. The intention of the present volume is to bring together for the first time Newton’s scattered papers and letters on natural philosophy (excluding math ematics, pure theology, and biblical chronology) as they were actu ally available in print during most of the 18th century, that is, prior to Horsley’s edition of Newton’s works in 1779-1785. Newton’s two major books on physical science, the Principia and the Opticks, are today readily accessible, and in print; this volume complements them by placing in the hands of students all of Newton’s related publications issued during his lifetime or soon after his death. -
