UNDERGRADUATES Undergraduate Enrollments 2014-2015 Gender and Sexuality Studies Core Courses: 119 Cross-listed Courses: 585 Certificate Students Students who wish to complete the requirements for the undergraduate certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies must take six courses: GSS 201 or 202, the introductory course; GSS 301 or 302, an advanced, interdisciplinary, rotating special topics seminar; and four additional courses chosen from among other gender- and sexuality-related offerings across the University. Among these courses, at least one must be taken in each of three broad disciplinary areas: social sciences, humanities, and sciences. Students may take gender- and sexuality-related courses in their major departments for certificate credit at the discretion of the program’s director. In addition, certificate students are urged to incorporate issues related to feminism, women, gender, and/or sexuality into their junior papers and senior theses. Huffman ‘90 Memorial Senior Thesis Prize We are grateful to the family and friends of Suzanne M. Huffman’90 for endowing this prize. Suzanne was a Women’s Studies certificate student who completed her senior thesis while undergoing chemotherapy. Her feminist commitments were central to her life and remained so until her untimely death in the fall of 1991. To capture something of her spirit, the prize citation reads: “This prize is intended to honor a student whose scholarship shows a deep commitment to the dilemmas raised by feminism and an extraordinary empathy for the problems and struggles of women.” The Huffman Prize is a University-endowed prize included in the Commencement program. This year Nicholas J. Williams was awarded the prize for his thesis in History, “’The Food Problem is Fundamental to the Welfare of the Race’: The New England Kitchen, Women, and Food Science, 1890-1894.” Christina M. Chica was awarded the second prize for her thesis in Sociology, “The Globalization of LGBT Rights: A Comparative Look at Brazil and China.” Rebecca E. Basaldua received an honorable mention for her thesis in Politics, “Justice Untested, Crime Unsolved: An Analysis of Reported Forcible Rape to Law Enforcement, Number of Sexual Assault Kits Collected by Law Enforcement, and the Number of Sexual Assault Kits that Remain Untested in Agencies’ Storage Rooms.” Annual Report, Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies, 2014-2015 Page 6 III. CURRICULUM: CORE, PROGRAM, AND DEPARTMENTAL COURSES Gender and Sexuality Studies Courses FALL 2014 GSS 201: Introduction to the Study of Gender (22 students enrolled) Prof. Gayle M. Salamon What does it mean to be a woman or a man? Or neither? How do gender and sexuality, those seemingly most personal and private of attributes, emerge from networks of power and social relations? This course introduces major concepts in the interdisciplinary field of gender and sexuality studies. We will analyze the ways in which gender, as an object of study and as a lived experience, intersects with class, race, and ability, and will examine the relation between gender, sexuality and power in literary, philosophical, political and medical discourses. GSS 319 / AMS 320 / ENG 319: U.S. Women Writers (4 students enrolled) Prof. Alfred Bendixen An exploration of the literary works of women writers in the United States with an emphasis on the role gender has played and continues to play in the development of literary movements and genres. Our examination of both canonical and non-canonical writings will focus on the formation of feminist literary conventions in the 19th century and their transformations in the 20th and 21st centuries. Our reading will include romantic tales, ghost stories, realistic stories, novels of immigration, thrillers, works for children, autobiographical mythmaking, poetry, and graphic novels. GSS 394 / HIS 312: History and the Body (16 students enrolled) Prof. Regina Kunzel This course introduces students to new scholarship on the history of the body and the shifting political and cultural contests over understandings of the “natural” or “normal” body. Through readings in gender and sexuality studies, history, and disability studies, as well as autobiography, film, and other primary sources, we will explore changes in the ways in which human bodies have been conceived and represented, and will consider the work of historians and cultural theorists who move further to historicize the lived experience of the human body. Sink or Swim: Deciding the Fate of the Miss America Swimsuit Competition Grace Slapak Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: The Miss America beauty pageant has faced widespread criticism for the swimsuit portion of its show. Feminists claim that the event promotes objectification and oversexualization of contestants in direct contrast to the Miss America Organization’s (MAO) message of progressive female empowerment. The MAO’s position as the leading source of women’s scholarships worldwide begs the question: should women have to compete in a bikini to pay for a place in a cellular biology lecture? As dissent for the pageant mounts, the new head of the MAO Board of Directors, Gretchen Carlson, and the first all-female Board of Directors must decide where to steer the faltering organization. The MAO, like many other businesses, must choose whether to modernize in-line with social movements or whole-heartedly maintain their contentious traditions. When considering the MAO’s long and controversial history, along with their recent scandals, the #MeToo Movement, and the complex world of television entertainment, the path ahead is anything but clear. Ultimately, Gretchen Carlson and the Board of Directors may have to decide between their feminist beliefs and their professional business aspirations. Underlying this case, then, is the question of whether a sufficient definition of women’s leadership is simply leadership by women or if the term and its weight necessitate leadership for women. Will the board’s final decision keep this American institution afloat? And, more importantly, what precedent will it set for women executives who face similar quandaries of identity?     Excerpt • Temple University Press Introduction: Beauty Matters On September 14, 2013, Nina Davuluri, a twenty-four-year-old Miss New York beauty-pageant queen, became the first Indian American to win the title of Miss America. Within minutes of Davuluri’s history-making win, Twitter was abuzz with racist tweets, some calling Davuluri a “terrorist” and a “member of Al Qaeda.” Others misidentified Davuluri, a Hindu whose family hails from South India, as both “Muslim” and “Arab,” reli- gious and geographic identities that, in the wake of a post-9/11 cultural backlash against Muslim, Arab, and South Asian populations and ram- pant Islamophobia, were intended to disqualify Davuluri from the title of Miss America—as one racist tweeter put it, “This is Miss America not Miss Muslim.” Yet, just as quickly, countertweets came pouring in to defend Davuluri, whose political platform for the pageant was “Celebrat- ing Diversity through Cultural Competency.” Rather predictably, these tweets appealed to the multicultural ethos of the Miss America pageant, citing Davuluri’s win as evidence of the US nation’s embrace of ethni- cally diverse ideals of “American beauty.” In the days that followed, South Asian American writers and blog- gers weighed in as well, many arguing that Davuluri’s Indian features productively challenged “euro-centric ideals of beauty” and contributed to “a broadening understanding of Americanness in a space that has historically taken a fairly narrow view of what qualifies as an accept- ably American appearance and background” (qtd. in Hafiz). One tweeter said: "They just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must've made Obama happy." Ms Davuluri was born in New York and grew up as a Hindu. This is big news in India. A newspaper wrote the racism started as soon as Nina received the tiara and before her tears were dry. It said the tweets ruined "the moment of triumph for the first ever Miss America of Indian origin". Ms Davuluri ignored the comments, saying: "I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American." She was happy the contest embraced diversity and happy that children could see a new Miss America.
