    Decorations and Honours Awarded to Shore Old Boys in World War I & II DECORATIONS AND HONOURS AWARDED TO OLD BOYS AND STAFF IN WW 1. Notes : 1. List is alphabetical. It is not exhaustive: there may be errors and omissions. 2. It is uncertain when some awards were made: they have been included nonetheless. 3. 126 men were decorated, 37 more than once. A total of 172 awards/decorations were received by Old Boys, with 67 Military Crosses (awarded to 60 men, 7 of whom were awarded Bars to their Crosses) and 45 Mentioned in Despatches being the two most awarded. 24 Military Medals were also awarded, to 22 men (two received Bars to their Medals).     Chapter 24 07 September 2017 WORLD WAR TWO MEDALS Page 02 Defence Medal 04 Canadian Volunteer Service Medal 08 Newfoundland Volunteer Service Medal 10 1939/1945 War Medal 1 THE DEFENCE MEDAL TERMS The medal was usually awarded to Canadians for six months service in Britain between 03 September 1939 and 02 September 1945. The exact terms were: - service in the forces in non- operational areas subjected to air attack or closely threatened, providing such service lasted for three or more years; - service overseas or outside the country of residence, providing that such service lasted for one year, except in territories threatened by the enemy or subject to bomb attacks, in which case it was six months. Under the terms of this last condition, Canadians serving for one year in Newfoundland were eligible and Canadians serving for six months in Hong Kong were eligible. - qualifying period in mine and bomb disposal was three months. - service in West Africa, Palestine and India, other than operational air crew, qualified for this medal. - those awarded the GC or GM for civil defence received this medal. - Home Guard and others in Britain qualified for this medal. BAR There is no bar to this medal. DESCRIPTION A circular, silver (.800 fine) medal, 36-mm in diameter. The British issued medals were made of cupro-nickel. OBVERSE The obverse shows the bareheaded coinage effigy of King George VI, facing left, and the legend: GEORGIVS VI D: BR: OMN: REX F:D: IND:IMP: REVERSE On the reverse, the Royal Crown rests on the stump of an oak tree, flanked by a lion and a lioness.

Ministry of Defence ROYAL WARRANT DATED 2010 GALLANTRY AWARDS ELIZABETH R WHEREAS WE deem it expedient pursuant to Our powers to make provisions governing the payment of monies to the holders of Gallantry Awards who are members of Our armed forces, their representatives or estates, where such awards were bestowed for deeds committed whilst in service in Our armed forces; OUR WILL AND PLEASURE is that the Schedule attached to this Our Warrant be established and obeyed as the authority on matters concerning the payment of monies in respect of Gallantry Awards of Our armed forces; OUR FURTHER WILL AND PLEASURE is that Our Defence Council shall be the sole administrators and interpreters of the Schedule attached to this Our Warrant and shall be empowered to issue such detailed instructions in reference thereto as they may deem from time to time necessary; and that any function of the Defence Council under this Our Warrant may be discharged by the Admiralty Board, the Army Board or the Air Force Board or person or persons authorised by such a Board, and accordingly each reference in this Our Warrant to the Defence Council shall include a reference to such a Board or to those persons.
