    The text is copied from http://www.greatwar.co.uk/medals/ww1-campaign-medals.htm The 1914-15 Star Established in December 1918. Also known as 'Pip'. This bronze medal was authorized in 1918. It is very similar to the 1914 Star but it was issued to a much wider range of recipients. Broadly speaking it was awarded to all who served in any theatre of war against Germany between 5th August 1914 and 31st December 1915, except those eligible for the 1914 Star. Similarly, those who received the Africa General Service Medal or the Sudan 1910 Medal were not eligible for the award. Like the 1914 Star, the 1914-15 Star was not awarded alone. The recipient had to have received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The reverse is plain with the recipient's service number, rank, name and unit impressed on it. An estimated 2.4 million of these medals were issued. The British War Medal, 1914-18 Established on 26th July 1919. Also known as 'Squeak'. The silver or bronze medal was awarded to officers and men of the British and Imperial Forces who either entered a theatre of war or entered service overseas between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918 inclusive. This was later extended to services in Russia, Siberia and some other areas in 1919 and 1920. Approximately 6.5 million British War Medals were issued. Approximately 6.4 million of these were the silver versions of this medal. Around 110,000 of a bronze version were issued mainly to Chinese, Maltese and Indian Labour Corps.

To award a star, a period of one month was deemed to be 30 days. Service curtailed by death, or disability due to service, also qualified for the award. A recipient of a decoration, Mention-in-Despatches or a King's Commendation, qualified for the award irrespective of the length of service. Service spent in qualifying for one star could not run concurrently with service qualifying for another. Prisoner-of-War time could count towards the 1939-45 Star but it would not count towards the earning of other stars unless the 1939-45 Star qualifying time had been completed before capture. No more than five stars could be awarded to any individual. BARS All of the stars had bars except the Italy Star. The bars represent either a special service connected with that star (such as the Battle of Britain with the 1939-45 Star) or denote that the person qualified for the award of another specific star after the award of the first star. Only one bar per medal is worn. DESCRIPTION A six pointed tombac (a yellow copper-zinc alloy) star, 45-mm across the points. OBVERSE The Royal and Imperial Cypher (GRI with VI below) appears in the centre of the obverse.

    Chapter 24 07 September 2017 WORLD WAR TWO MEDALS Page 02 Defence Medal 04 Canadian Volunteer Service Medal 08 Newfoundland Volunteer Service Medal 10 1939/1945 War Medal 1 THE DEFENCE MEDAL TERMS The medal was usually awarded to Canadians for six months service in Britain between 03 September 1939 and 02 September 1945. The exact terms were: - service in the forces in non- operational areas subjected to air attack or closely threatened, providing such service lasted for three or more years; - service overseas or outside the country of residence, providing that such service lasted for one year, except in territories threatened by the enemy or subject to bomb attacks, in which case it was six months. Under the terms of this last condition, Canadians serving for one year in Newfoundland were eligible and Canadians serving for six months in Hong Kong were eligible. - qualifying period in mine and bomb disposal was three months. - service in West Africa, Palestine and India, other than operational air crew, qualified for this medal. - those awarded the GC or GM for civil defence received this medal. - Home Guard and others in Britain qualified for this medal. BAR There is no bar to this medal. DESCRIPTION A circular, silver (.800 fine) medal, 36-mm in diameter. The British issued medals were made of cupro-nickel. OBVERSE The obverse shows the bareheaded coinage effigy of King George VI, facing left, and the legend: GEORGIVS VI D: BR: OMN: REX F:D: IND:IMP: REVERSE On the reverse, the Royal Crown rests on the stump of an oak tree, flanked by a lion and a lioness.

    THE 7th ROYAL FUSILIERS IN THE CRIMEAN WAR With THE MEDAL ROLL (As far as could be confirmed) 1854 – 1856 Compiled By J P Kelleher 2013 1854: Nearly forty years had passed since the Royal Fusiliers saw active service, when Russia, seeking in her ambition to overwhelm Turkey, was arrested in her aggression by the united action of England and France. The two Powers declared war against the Czar on the 27th.March 1854, and the British force was sent to south-eastern Europe, under command of Lord Raglan- who as Lord Fitzroy Somerset had earned distinction under Wellington. The Royal Fusiliers, were amongst the first regiments ordered to be brought up to war strength. They were quartered at Manchester, and the North of England was their recruiting ground. During the early spring, the Regiment was raised to full establishment, and drilled into one of the smartest, and most solid battalions in the service. On Tuesday, the 4th.April 1854, the Royal Fusiliers: Headquarters and 8 companies; consisting of 3 Field officers, 8 Captains, 14 Lieutenants, 5 Staff, 46 Sergeants, 15 Drummers, 850 Rank and File, and 25 women – under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Walter Lacy Yea, entrained at Manchester for Southampton, where they embarked the same evening on board the transport „Orinoco‟. After touching at Gibralter and Malta, the transport disembarked her troops at Scutari, on the 22nd. Here the regiment was brigaded with the 23rd and 33rd. Foot, under Brigadier General Richard Airey. Airey‟s Brigade, with the 19th, 77th, 88th. and 2nd Rifle Brigade, formed the Light Division, commanded by Lord George Brown.
