Witchy Wild West Witchy Wild West Comics | M.Mignola, D.Fegredo, R.Corben: Hellboy 11 Im elften Band der ›Hellboy‹-Reihe mit dem Titel ›Der Krumme‹ stellen Mike Mignola und eine ganze Horde Zeichner die Mythen des Westens vor und legen eine Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten oben drauf. PETER KLEMENT ist mit dem roten Dämon in die Berge Virginias gereits und hat die Grenzen der Zivilisation ausgelotet. 1872 hat der Maler John Gast dem Manifest Destiny ein Gemälde mit dem Titel «Der Fortschritt Amerikas» gewidmet. In diesem Gemälde schreitet eine – wie immer leicht bekleidete – allegorische Dame mit einem Telegrafendraht in der einen und einem Schulbuch in der anderen Hand durch die Wildnis Amerikas, in die sie das Licht der Zivilisation trägt. Doch Licht ist keine binäre Angelegenheit, wo Licht ist, ist zwar auch Schatten – doch dazwischen ist eine Grauzone. Hellboy trifft auf seinen Weg durch die Appalachen Tommie, einen Herumtreiber, der vor Jahren einen Pakt mit dem dämonischen Krummen geschlossen hat und das nun bitter bereut. An der Frontlinie zwischen Licht und Schatten kämpfen die beiden gegen Hexen, den Krummen und das ungezähmte Land, in dem es keine Telefone gibt und in dem das Licht der Zivilisation nur trübe aus einer Petroleumlampe funzelt. Intermezzo Der elfte Band ist eines von Mignolas berühmt-berüchtigten Zwischenspielen, in denen er Geschichten präsentiert, die mit dem Hauptplot wenig, gar nichts oder noch nichts zu tun haben – man kann das Mignola nie so genau wissen. Die titelgebende Geschichte «Der Krumme» nimmt knapp die Hälfte des Bandes ein, die restlichen Seiten teilen sich fünf andere Geschichten über Piraten, Löcher im Boden und versehentlichen familiären Kannibalismus. Vier verschiedene Zeichner, exklusive Mignola und ein Kolorist (Dave Stewart) machen den Band künstlerisch extrem abwechslungsreich, da neben anerkannten Größen, wie Richard Corben (›Punisher: The End‹), auch weniger bekannte Zeichner, wie Jason Shawn Alexander zum Zug kommen. Die anderen beiden sind die Schwergewichte Guy Davis und Duncan Fegredo, mit denen Mignola schon zuvor zusammengearbeitet hat. Witchy Wild West Genauso divers wie die Stile der Künstler sind die erzählten Geschichten: ›Der Krumme‹ ist aktualisierte amerikanische Folklore, mit lovecraftschen Untertönen. ›Die in Schiffen übers Meer fahren‹ ist eine schön erzählte Geistergeschichte, in der Blackbeard seinen Kopf sucht. In ›Die Kapelle von Moloch‹ nutzt Mignola die Gelegenheit, mit seinem Recherchefleiß anzugeben und so dem/der LeserIn Material für die nächste Cocktailparty der okkulten Art an die Hand zu geben. Schließlich ist es immer gut zu wissen, dass Bischof Zrinyi 1752 in Rumänien gegen die Karpatenziege kämpfte. ›Das Mal‹ ist ein kleiner Ausflug in die Sphären dies Mindfucks oder der Beat Generation, je nachdem wie man es hält. ›Wie Koschej unsterblich wurde‹ und ›Baba Jagas Festmahl‹ sind Adaptionen russischer Märchen, denen Mignola und der jeweilige Zeichner seine eigene Note gibt. A man called Manly Wade Wellman Neben den verschiedenen Geschichten, die alle – wie immer – gut erzählt und gezeichnet sind, hat der Band noch einen lesenswerten Aufsatz über ein Urgestein der amerikanischen Pulp-Ära zu bieten. Wellman ist einer der Autoren, die in der goldenen Ära von Pulp und Science-Fiction für Magazine wie ›Wonder Stories‹ oder ›Weird Tales‹ Geschichten über Marsmenschen, Dämonen und Helden schrieben. Zu Beginn seiner Karriere standen eher klassische Weltraumopern auf dem Programm, von denen er sich bald verabschiedete, um sich dem Okkulten zuzuwenden. Als Inspirationsquelle dienten ihm dabei amerikanische Mythen, die er mit seinen Figuren bevölkert. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Autoren lagen ihm die Geschichten aus den Appalachen am Herzen und so findet sich in seinen Erzählungen nicht das übliche Vorurteil des ungehobelten Hinterwäldlers oder der unzivilisierten Rothaut. Seine Figuren verfügen über Wissen aus Jahrhunderten alten Bräuchen, die sie in dem unheimlichen, weil unzivilisierten Land überleben lassen. Wenn man den Artikel liest, bekommt man zum einen Lust, eine Geschichte von Mr.Wellman zur Hand zu nehmen und zum anderen gewinnt man einen kleinen Einblick in Mignola’s Quellen. Once upon a time in the west Der Krumme ist wieder ein gelungener Wurf von Mignola, in dem er den amerikanischen Kontinent ins Rampenlicht rückt, was für europäische Leser mit Sicherheit interessantes Neuland ist. Als einzige Nörgelei bleibt anzumerken, dass es überhaupt keinen Spaß macht nach einem fiesen Cliffhanger im vorherigen Band einen Sammelband aufzuschlagen, in dem Mignola – mal wieder – abseits des Hauptplots in den Gebirgen von Virginia durch die Gegen mäandert. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

Esta es una relación que va más allá de la abundante, tanto cuantitativa como cualitativamente, traslación que de su obra se ha realizado al medio de la narrativa gráfica, y que también incluye la gran influencia que tuvo el autor en los primeros comic-books americanos y, particularmente, en un género de cómic de una gran difusión como es el cómic de horror y misterio cuya estructura está basada en las historias cortas. También se cubre en este artículo la presencia de Poe, en algunas historias, como un personaje más de cómic, mostrando que la trascendencia de la personalidad del autor es, en cierta medida, tan importante como la de su obra. PALABRAS CLAVE: Poe, cómic, horror y misterio, relatos cortos, adaptaciones gráficas. ABSTRACT «Poe in the comic book: adaptations and influences». The relationship between E.A. Poe and the comic’s world is shown in this paper. This is a relationship which not only goes beyond the abundant, both quantitatively and qualitatively, translation of his work to the graphic narrative medium, but also includes the big influence that the author had in the initial 151 American comic-books and, particularly, in a comic genre with a big audience as the horror and mystery comic-book whose structure is based on short stories. The presence of Poe, in some stories, as a simple comic character is also covered in this paper, showing that the transcendence of the author’s personality is, to a certain extent, as important as his work.

There apparently will be at least 4 Blackmark books by Gil Kane from Bantam, vzith the first one due to be reissued with a new cover.

    The Return of “The Rook” Information Guide There is a clear void in today’s American pop culture that is The Rook. It all began in the early 1960’s. Bill, or his adventure hero alter-identity “Billy De” began working in comics before he grew his first whisker. His fascination with comic books was shared by his partner in crime Marty Arbunich. Together they created some of the very first comic book fanzines; Fantasy Hero, Fantasy Illustrated, Yancy Street Journal and Voice of Comicdom, starting at the ripe age of 14. Bill and Marty worked tirelessly to meet self-imposed deadlines as if their loyal fans relied on their publications. On one occasion Bill even snuck into Sacred Heart High School’s art room and used the Dot printer to mass produce their fanzine. Before Comic Con became the premier pop-culture comic event, there was the World Science Fiction Convention (now known as WorldCon) and in 1964 it was in Oakland. Although only 523 were in attendance, this show would have resounding impacts on Bill’s career in comics. Also in attendance was maybe the greatest science fiction fan of all time Forrest J. Ackerman, who contributed to the first science fiction fanzine, The Time Traveler. In the same year, The Time Travelers, a science fiction film, would go into production. The cast included Forry Ackerman. The Rook’s return to comics is nearly 50 years to the date of the event that would inspire Bill’s creative direction. Forrest Ackerman would later go on to create the highly popular alternative comic character Vampirella in 1969.

Kane 2013 i ABSTRACT This dissertation explores ways in which the graphic narrative (graphic novel) format for storytelling, known as sequential art, can be adapted for undergraduate-level introductory textbooks across disciplines. Currently, very few graphic textbooks exist, and many of them lack the academic rigor needed to give them credibility. My goal in this dissertation is to examine critically both the strengths and weaknesses of this art form and formulate a set of standards and procedures necessary for developing new graphic textbooks that are scholastically viable for use in college-level instruction across disciplines. To the ends of establishing these standards, I have developed a four-pronged information-gathering approach. First I read as much pre factum qualitative and quantitative data from books, articles, and Internet sources as possible in order to establish my base of inquiry. Second, I created a twelve-part dissertation blog (graphictextbooks.blogspot.com) where I was able to post my findings and establish my integrity for my research among potential interviewees. Third, I interviewed 16 professional graphic novel/graphic textbook publishers, editors, writers, artists, and scholars as well as college professors and librarians. Finally, I sent out an online survey consisting of a sample chapter of an existing graphic textbook to college professors and asked if the content of the source material was potentially effective for their own instruction in undergraduate teaching.
