    Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

    POE EN EL CÓMIC: ADAPTACIONES E INFLUENCIAS Francisco Saez de Adana Herrero Universidad de Alcalá RESUMEN En este artículo se muestra la relación de E.A. Poe con el mundo del cómic. Esta es una relación que va más allá de la abundante, tanto cuantitativa como cualitativamente, traslación que de su obra se ha realizado al medio de la narrativa gráfica, y que también incluye la gran influencia que tuvo el autor en los primeros comic-books americanos y, particularmente, en un género de cómic de una gran difusión como es el cómic de horror y misterio cuya estructura está basada en las historias cortas. También se cubre en este artículo la presencia de Poe, en algunas historias, como un personaje más de cómic, mostrando que la trascendencia de la personalidad del autor es, en cierta medida, tan importante como la de su obra. PALABRAS CLAVE: Poe, cómic, horror y misterio, relatos cortos, adaptaciones gráficas. ABSTRACT «Poe in the comic book: adaptations and influences». The relationship between E.A. Poe and the comic’s world is shown in this paper. This is a relationship which not only goes beyond the abundant, both quantitatively and qualitatively, translation of his work to the graphic narrative medium, but also includes the big influence that the author had in the initial 151 American comic-books and, particularly, in a comic genre with a big audience as the horror and mystery comic-book whose structure is based on short stories. The presence of Poe, in some stories, as a simple comic character is also covered in this paper, showing that the transcendence of the author’s personality is, to a certain extent, as important as his work.

Common terms used in the entertainment industry for this ever- increasing genre of content are “reality,” “informational,” “documentary” Television programming or “unscripted” programming; but content creators and producers Karen Kraft and Molly Hermann would disagree. Writing is definitely a part of crafting documentary/informational content—to such a degree that even the WGA is working to implement a division for the Docu/ writers of the so-called “nonfiction” genres. Karen Kraft graduated with a B.S. in communications from Ithaca College and an M.A. in film and writing from American University. Kraft joined Discovery in 1995 as a producer/writer for Discovery Networks Reality International. During her tenure Kraft was personally involved in pitch- ing, producing and writing numerous award-winning productions. In 1999, she was promoted to creative executive of the Discovery Production Group International. In her role, Kraft oversaw the editing of dozens of Special long and short-form originals as executive producer/creative executive, as andand thethe creationcreation andand well as handled reversions for Discovery networks in over 155 countries.     GRAPHIC NOVELS IN YOUR SCHOOL LIBRARY Jesse Karp ILLUSTRATED BY Rush Kress AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CHICAGO 2012 For more than ten years, JESSE KARP has been a school librarian at LREI (Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School), one of Manhattan’s oldest independent schools and a long-standing leader in progressive education. He works with students across the cur- riculum, from beginning readers to high school students, with all kinds of material, includ- ing graphic novels. He regularly reviews graphic novels and picture books for Booklist and contributes to the magazine’s yearly graphic novel best list roundup; he has written articles for Book Links and American Libraries as well. He has delivered seminars on the sequen- tial art form at Pratt Institute and Queens College and teaches a graduate course about the history and analysis of the form at Pratt. He has served as a graphic novel panelist at Book Expo America for two years running and served on YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens committee from 2009 to 2012. He cocreated the education webcomic Dr. Lollipop and is the author of the young adult novel Those That Wake, which is set in Manhattan, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.
