'Talk of the Town', And, Later in the Year, in Cabaret Wi
1966 The group appeared with Cliff for a six-week spell at London’s ‘Talk Of The Town’, and, later in the year, in cabaret without Cliff at Bournemouth and South Shields. But they were with him for three further major projects, the films ‘Finders Keepers’ and (as puppets) ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’; and also (in the flesh) the pantomime ‘Cinderella’ which opened at the London Palladium on 10 December 1966. For all three, the first two especially, they penned a number of finely crafted vocal and instrumental pieces, which resulted in eponymous releases, an LP (which made No.6), an EP (No.6 again), and another LP put out in January 1967 (a mere No.30 for Cinderella , a very uneven set, the first Cliff Album not to make the Top 20). The high points for Cliff and The Shadows in the Singles department were the outstanding ‘Time Drags By’ (No.10) and ‘In The Country’ (yet another No.6), both group compositions. The Shadows fared less well with their own Singles, the first and third of which were vocals: [138] I MET A GIRL (No.22), [154] A PLACE IN THE SUN (No.24), [156] THE DREAMS I DREAM (No.42). [138] I MET A GIRL was eminently hummable, if not in the league of “a Rubber Soul outtake”, to which one reviewer likened it; nobody appears to have stopped to reflect that the elegant [154] A PLACE IN THE SUN, released in July, might have been wholly out of line with current market trends, as a glance at the Top 20 for the beginning of August, say, will reveal; as it happened though, Hank Marvin’s [156] THE DREAMS I DREAM, the most commercial-sounding by far and a composition that compares favourably with his later favourite [203] THE DAY I MET MARIE, was the one that gave them their lowest chart placing to date; it would be recorded by Cliff Richard without The Shadows on the 1968 Album Established 1958 . -

SHADOWS of the SEVENTIES an Article Covering the Shadows’ Most Creative but Criminally Overlooked Decade
SHADOWS OF THE SEVENTIES An article covering the Shadows’ most creative but criminally overlooked decade. By Chris Drake 1 In August 2013, Music Club Deluxe/Parlophone released a 2CD Shadows compilation CD entitled The Collection . The slipcase and inner insert featured a big close-up of the by now obligatory red and white Fender Stratocaster, which during the past 30 or so years has become synonymous with virtually any Shadows-related product. It’s an attractive and eye-catching image. What is worth remarking in this case is that the 35 tracks contained within come almost entirely from the 1970s – a period of the Shadows’ history in which there wasn’t a single red (or Salmon Pink !) Fender Strat in sight. But, in fairness, would a close-up of the scratch plate, body and other furnishings, all uniformly in black, have made the product stand out on the shelves? What is interesting also is that the period covered represents something of a commercial low-point for the band, with very little in terms of hit singles and albums compared to the previous decade. What it does contain, on the other hand, is some of the band’s most creative and impressive recordings and suggests that perhaps the Shadows’ output of the 1970s is worth listening to and evaluating after all. The basis of this article, therefore, will be the contents of MCDLX187: The Collection . Before venturing into the territory so comprehensively covered by the compilation, let’s just pause for a few moments to consider the period leading up to it and the way in which the Shadows seemed to prepare the ground for this new and potentially very exciting decade. -

1 Victor Rust
VICTOR RUST: THE SHADOWS RECORDING CATALOGUE AN EXTENDED REVIEW Malcolm Campbell Victor Rust, The Shadows Recording Catalogue . Lulu Publications, September 2011. ISBN 978-0-9567384-1-7, 572pp. A download is available for purchase. In my review of Victor Rust’s book in Pipeline 88 (Spring 2012) 54–56 I complimented the element of musical analysis, but found practically nothing else to commend it. I decided when I submitted the review that it was better on balance with the space at my disposal to single out the main problem areas and furnish representative examples of each. The purpose of these pages of further personal reflections is to deal more extensively with the rampant plagiarism and the mountain of inadequately researched and poorly digested material that pervades the work. I won’t rehearse here the particulars of the Pipeline review. I am happy however to furnish anyone interested in the fuller picture with a scan of it via email, just contact me direct at [email protected] I should make it clear at the outset that it is a matter of great regret to me that my judgement of this book has turned out to be so severe. Its outer appearance suggested that we might expect a substantial contribution to our understanding of the group’s rich musical output, something that built constructively upon the foundations laid with immense patience, effort, skill and dedication by various researchers over a number of decades. That such an expectation is far from being met on any reasonable reckoning is the contention of this paper. -

1 1980 Was the Year in Which the Group's Long-Standing EMI Contract
1980 1980 was the year in which the group’s long-standing EMI contract came up for renewal. A key point in the ensuing negotiations was that The Shadows (Marvin, Welch and Bennett) wished to exert firm and meaningful control of their recordings, by funding and leasing them out, so retaining ownership. EMI declined their terms. Bruce Welch: “Given our length of time with EMI and the incredible sales-figures for those late Seventies Albums, I was staggered when they turned our offer down.” The group then found itself without a record label, formed their own production company Roll Over Records, and presently signed an initial three Album deal with Polydor. The last gasp of fresh Shadows’ material from EMI was the Single [311] RIDERS IN THE SKY/ [312] RUSK in January 1980, followed up in July with a compilation Album offering a solitary track hitherto unavailable in the UK, [313] BLACK IS BLACK. By August the first Polydor Single was out. The transition was smooth and, in musical terms, imperceptible. Writers on the Polydor phase seem particularly prone to self-delusion, fabricating a profound break with the past where none exists. There is an unvoiced implication that, had the group stayed with EMI, they would have somehow preserved what is commonly perceived to be their musical integrity, that is to say, they would have remained faithful to the style of music that brought them to the attention of fans in the first place. That style of music had long since been buried, irrevocably. To move from the general to the particular: the claim by one CD annotator that “their Polydor debut signalled something of a change of style” and that [314] EQUINOXE was “wholly unlike any of their previous Singles” is demonstrably false. -
Victor James Daley - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Victor James Daley - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Victor James Daley(5 September 1858 – 29 December 1905) Victor James William Patrick Daley was an Australian poet. He was born at the Navan, County Armagh, Ireland, and was educated at the Christian Brothers at Devonport in England. He arrived in Australia in 1878, and became a freelance journalist and writer in both Melbourne and Sydney. Whilst in Melbourne, he met and became a friend of Marcus Clarke; later, in Sydney, he became acquainted with Henry Kendall. He is notable for becoming the first author in Australia who tried to earn a living from writing alone. In Sydney in 1898, he founded the bohemian Dawn and Dusk Club, which had many notable members such as writer Henry Lawson. He died at Sydney of tuberculosis. He used the pseudonym Creeve Roe, (Irish =Red Branch - the area next to the Navan where Cu Chulainn trained as a Red Branch Knight) as well as his own name. His Poems (1908) and other collections were published posthumously. A memoir of Daley by Bertram Stevens was published in Wine and Roses. Daley serves chiefly as an example of the Celtic Twilight in Australian verse. He also serves as a lyrical alternative to his contemporary bush balladists. www.PoemHunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive 1 A Christmas Eve GOOD fellows are laughing and drinking (To-night no heart should grieve), But I am of old days thinking, Alone, on Christmas Eve. Old memories fast are springing To life again; old rhymes Once more in my brain are ringing— Ah, God be with old times! There never was man so lonely But ghosts walked him beside, For Death our spirits can only By veils of sense divide.
