They are relatively inaccessible, other than 23 by boat, and despite being a virtually unbroken succession they have not received the 24 attention afforded to the Whitecliff GCR (Geological Conservation Review series) 25 site at the eastern extremity of the island. A detailed account of the lithostratigraphy 26 27 of the strata in Scratchell‟s Bay is presented and integrated with macro and micro 28 biostratigraphical results for each formation present. Comparisons are made with 29 earlier work to provide a comprehensive description of the Seaford Chalk, Newhaven 30 Chalk, Culver Chalk and Portsdown Chalk formations for the Needles promontory. 31 32 33 The strata described are correlated with those seen in the Culver Down Cliffs – 34 Whitecliff Bay at the eastern end of the island that form the Whitecliff GCR site. -

Identification of Karst Features in the Portsdown Chalk Fm. from Aerial Photography, Dorset, UK
Identification of Karst Features in the Portsdown Chalk Fm. from Aerial Photography, Dorset, UK Morena N Hammer1, Paul D Burley2, Howard D Mooers1 1Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Minnesota Duluth, Duluth, MN 2Department of Earth Sciences, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN (email: [email protected]) Introduction Cranborne Chase hosts a unique geological and archaeological landscape in south central England. The Chase occupies the chalk downlands underlain by the cretaceous White Chalk Subgroup plateau that extends from the northern Chalke Escarpment, southward across the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, and Hampshire (Hopson, 2005). In this region, there is extensive archaeological evidence supporting a large Neolithic population in southern central England from approximately 3600-3440 BC (Woodbridge et al., 2013). During the transition from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic at about 4000 BC, there was a significant change in the tools, farming technique, and cultural tradition. Though archaeologically these transitions are significant, there is little to no data available recording the environment that the Neolithic people were living in and how they influenced the landscape through cultivation and related impacts. One site that has yielded an extensive collection of animal and cultural remains during this time period is the excavation of Fir Tree Field Shaft doline (Allen & Green, 1998). Other typical data archives that would be used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the Neolithic period, such as lakes or peat fens, do not exist in Cranborne Chase because of the well-drained karst landscape. These karst features developed in the chalk can be excellent paleoenvironmental archives. Chalk, a form of limestone, is developed by the accumulation and lithification of calcium carbonate shells from marine organisms. -
Sex-Related Differences in General Intelligence G, Brain Size, and Social
Personality and Individual Differences 39 (2005) 497–509 www.elsevier.com/locate/paid Sex-related differences in general intelligence g, brain size, and social status Helmuth Nyborg * Department of Psychology, Research Unit for Differential Psychology, University of Aarhus, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark Received 24 November 2003; received in revised form 9 March 2004; accepted 7 December 2004 Available online 8 June 2005 Abstract The question of a sex difference in intelligence has long divided the experts. IQ researchers sum standard- ized subtest scores to calculate intelligence in general, and find that males outscore females by about 3.8 points, whereas factor analysts derive the g factor scores from intertest-correlations and find no consistent sex differences in general intelligence. The latter finding is puzzling, as males have larger average brains than females, and brain size correlates .30–.45 with g (and IQ). Males thus ‘‘ought’’ to score a higher g than females. The present study addressed this paradox by testing four hypotheses: (1) Inadequate analyses explain why researchers get inconsistent results, (2) The proper method will identify a male g lead, (3) The larger male brain ‘‘explains’’ the male g lead, (4) The higher male g average and wider distribution transform into an exponentially increased male–female ratio at the high end of the g distribution, and this largely explains male dominance in society. All four hypotheses obtained support and explain in part why relatively few males dominate the upper strata in all known societies. The confirmation of hypothesis 3 suggests that the brain size—intelligence– dominance link may be partly biological. -

A Brief History of Medieval Monasticism in Denmark (With Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia)
religions Article A Brief History of Medieval Monasticism in Denmark (with Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia) Johnny Grandjean Gøgsig Jakobsen Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen, 2300 Copenhagen, Denmark; [email protected] Abstract: Monasticism was introduced to Denmark in the 11th century. Throughout the following five centuries, around 140 monastic houses (depending on how to count them) were established within the Kingdom of Denmark, the Duchy of Schleswig, the Principality of Rügen and the Duchy of Estonia. These houses represented twelve different monastic orders. While some houses were only short lived and others abandoned more or less voluntarily after some generations, the bulk of monastic institutions within Denmark and its related provinces was dissolved as part of the Lutheran Reformation from 1525 to 1537. This chapter provides an introduction to medieval monasticism in Denmark, Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia through presentations of each of the involved orders and their history within the Danish realm. In addition, two subchapters focus on the early introduction of monasticism to the region as well as on the dissolution at the time of the Reformation. Along with the historical presentations themselves, the main and most recent scholarly works on the individual orders and matters are listed. Keywords: monasticism; middle ages; Denmark Citation: Jakobsen, Johnny Grandjean Gøgsig. 2021. A Brief For half a millennium, monasticism was a very important feature in Denmark. From History of Medieval Monasticism in around the middle of the 11th century, when the first monastic-like institutions were Denmark (with Schleswig, Rügen and introduced, to the middle of the 16th century, when the last monasteries were dissolved Estonia). -
