Annual Report 2018–19 3 Introduction 5 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 6 Season Repertory and Events 14 Artist Roster 16 The Financial Results 20 Our Patrons On the cover: Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes a bow after his first official performance as Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director PHOTO: JONATHAN TICHLER / MET OPERA 2 Introduction The 2018–19 season was a historic one for the Metropolitan Opera. Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.

In fact, it is safe to say that the debutants were the ultimate scene stealers of Librettist Profile: The Tumultuous the performance. Life of Lorenzo Da Ponte, The… Dominant Debutants Any comment on this performance much start with Tomasz Konieczny, who has been making waves in Europe for years. While he has done Wotan, he was cast here as the “vil- lainous” Alberich. The truth is that Konieczny conjured up one of the greatest Met perfor- mances of the season, creating a rich portray- al of a tragic Ngure who is scorned and reject- ed by those who feel themselves superior to him.

http://operalively.com/forums/content.php/902-Das-Opernglas-%96-November-2013-Issue-Summary Das Opernglas – November, 2013, Issue Summary by MAuer Published on November 11th, 2013 07:01 PM http://www.opernglas.de/ Interviews Jonas Kaufmann: The Interview In this year of the Wagner and Verdi bicentennials, during which he had new recital albums devoted to each composer released on the market, the superstar tenor talks about the challenges of singing their music – and the uproar over the high C in Manrico’s stretta that surrounded his role debut in Munich this past summer. Kaufmann loves the operas of both Wagner and Verdi, and says he’d never want to have to choose between them. Both musical styles have their advantages, he explains. Verdi’s music is probably more immediately accessible than Wagner’s, which makes the former’s operas better suited as introductory pieces for someone just becoming acquainted with the art form. While Wagner’s operas do have some appealing melodies – he mentions the Ride of the Valkyries – he believes they also require more time for listeners to become accustomed to. However, once that occurs, Wagner’s music can become almost addictive; one is always discovering new layers in it. In contrast, Verdi’s music is not so complex, especially when one views the accompaniment, he says. The melody was more important to Verdi than the density of orchestral sound. However, Kaufmann doesn’t believe this makes Verdi’s music in any way inferior, or that it means his music lacks a certain intellectual appeal. He points out that Verdi enthusiasts are of all ages and economic levels.
