  • Three New Ophrys Species from Malta
242 The Central Mediterranean Naturalist 4(4): 243-252 Malta, November 2008 THREE NEW SPECIES FROM THE GENUS OPHRYS , SECTION PSEUDOPHRYS [FAM: ORCHIDACEAE ] ON THE MALTESE ISLANDS. 1 Stephen MIFSUD ABSTRACT This article deals with the first substantiated records from the Maltese islands of Ophrys lupercalis J. Devillers-Terschuren & P. Devillers and Ophrys lojaconoi P. Delforge, both forming part of the Ophrys fusca group, and of Ophrys phryganae J. Devillers- Terschuren & P. Devillers, belonging to the Ophrys lutea group. Identification is based on isometric morphological analysis, following the Delforge taxonomical system. Treatment of these taxa according to another taxonomical system by Baumann, Kunkele and Lorenz is also discussed. Keywords: Ophrys lojaconoi; Ophrys lupercalis; Ophrys phryganae; Ophrys fusca group ; Ophrys lutea group; Malta INTRODUCTION Using isometric morphological analysis and taxonomy by Delforge (2006), Ophrys lupercalis J. Devillers-Terschuren & P. Devillers and Ophrys lojaconoi P. Delforge from the Ophrys fusca group and Ophrys phryganae J. Devillers-Terschuren & P. Devillers from the Ophrys lutea group have been identified from the Maltese islands. These 3 species are not included by Bartolo et al. (2001) in their comprehensive article on Maltese orchids, listing 33 different Orchidaceae species and consequently, they have not been reported to occur in Malta so far. Lanfranco (2007) and Delforge (2006) have already indicated an assumptive presence of O. lupercalis on the Maltese islands, whilst Lanfranco (2007) suggested O. phryganae , both without substantiated records. Ophrys lupercalis J. Devillers-Terschuren & P. Devillers (= Ophrys fusca auct. non Link , O. ‘nigroaenea-fusca’ H.F. Paulus & Gack nom. prov.); Malta: Dingli (11-I-2008. leg./det.

  • Opening Doors Association Inclusivity – Artistic Development – Accessibility
Opening Doors Association Inclusivity – Artistic Development – Accessibility Annual Report 2015 The Opening Doors Association continued to grow and flourish during 2015. The voluntary organisation went through some changes in personnel, and was heavily engaged in the final implementation of two important EU projects, ART-is and Creative Ways, both of which had been funded through a number of national and European programmes. During an Extraordinary AGM held on 19th February 2015, a new President, together with a new Board, were elected. Prof Joanne Butterworth was elected as President and took over from Lou Ghirlando, a founder member of Opening Doors, who stepped down after seven years of dedicated, generous and committed work for the organisation. Sara Polidano, Justin Spiteri, Leanne Fenech, Kevin White, Brian Gauci, Sandra Mifsud, Nicole Cuschieri and Charlotte Stafrace were elected as members of the new Board. In recognition of his dedication and commitment to Opening Doors Association, Toni Attard was invited to become a Patron to join Patron Janatha Stubbs. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on the 24th September 2015, where Leanne Fenech and Kevin White stood down from the Board. Grateful thanks were given to both for their contributions; whilst Leanne remains a member of the Dance group, Kevin White has stepped down from the organisation because of pressure of work. The achievements and the implementation of important projects in 2015 could not have been possible without the funding secured through national programmes such as the Premju tal-President għall-Kreattivitá, the Malta Arts Fund, Grundtvig Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission, Y4U (Aġenzija Żgħażagħ) and the Voices Foundation.

  • Girolamo Manduca and Gian Francesco Abela: Tradition and Invention in Maltese Historiography *
Anthony T. Luttrell GIROLAMO MANDUCA AND GIAN FRANCESCO ABELA: TRADITION AND INVENTION IN MALTESE HISTORIOGRAPHY * The historian of medieval Malta faces an overwhelming poverty of the sources for the period before about 1400. The surviving texts and documents, the toponyms and topography, the numismatic and archaeological evidence provide a meagre and uncertain picture. Furthermore the outlines of the story have been distorted by a number of false traditions which are strongly rooted both in the existing historiography and in popular lore, and which often involve matters of national sentiment, religious dogma or political dispute. Whether the Maltese are "European" or "African" and whether Maltese Christianity has a continuous history have, for example, long been questions affecting the identity of the Maltese people. In seeking to pose these problems in meaningful terms, to evaluate the available evidence and to eliminate unscientific solutions, the historian must naturally reject what seems to lack any basis in fact or probability. Ideally, he should investigate each tradition, and if it never appears before a late date or when it demonstrably originates in a misunderstanding or a deliberate invention, then it should normally be abandoned; otherwise its repetition as a "tradition" contributes to the perpetuation of the myth. Such problems arise in all countries, and the historian should always distinguish various types of tradition. Certain legends seem to derive from a fascination with place-names and the universal temptation to explain or misin terpret them in a sense pleasing to popular sentiment. Many stories of pirates, caves, kidnappings, saintly interventions and suchlike simply repeat themes and details found throughout the Mediterranean world and even in ancient literature (1).

ABSTRACT The Maltese Islands have a history of water resource problems. A high proportion of the Maltese population has suffered over the past few years from water scarcity caused mainly by: (a) a shortage in water production and escalating water demands; (b) rising salinity levels in groundwater and tap water; (c) an undersized and deteriorating distribution system; and (d) increasing levels of groundwater pollution.
