In a reply back to me, the reader gave examples of the two spelling errors found in last month’s issue. After all, I am a quarter Irish, and what better way to celebrate than to don some festive green gear, share green beers with my friends and eat some corned beef and cabbage? Contrary to popular belief, St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t always a holiday devoted to imbibing green libations, organizing festive parades and pinching folks who for- got to wear green. Though over the years it has become a celebration of the Irish culture in general, its origins are with the Catholic Church dating back to the early 17th century. It was established to commemorate Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized Patron Saint of Ireland. And while we may love shamrocks because they bring good luck, their association with St. Patrick’s Day stems from the Saint’s use of them to explain the Holy Trinity. Although it is a holiday steeped in tradition, St. Patrick’s Day has morphed into an annual day of celebration with family and friends.
