Game of the Week (by Laurence Matheson)

Papin,V - Matheson,L [A34]

Canterbury Summer Swiss (7.2), 30.12.2014 18.Rxc4 Now things are really difficult for Black, his Going into the last round I miraculously found myself pieces are misplaced and under pressure, and will take equal first with the visiting Grandmasters, but faced a time to untangle 18...Bd7?! Again not best [The tough task as Black against Russian GM Papin. The two ungainly 18...Nd8 seems the monst tenacious; 19.Nb5 Kazakh GMs agreed a quick draw, leaving my board to Bd7 20.Nxa7 and although Black is a pawn down and decide the winner. 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 c5 3.g3 d5 4.cxd5 his pieces are strangely placed, he's at least not losing Nxd5 5.Bg2 Nc7 6.Qa4+!? An unusual sideline, well- any more material immediately] 19.Bxb7 Rab8 20.Bd5 prepared by Papin 6...Qd7 7.Nf3 Nc6 [7...Qxa4 8.Nxa4 White now threatens Rc7, winning a piece 20...Rfc8 Ne6 9.b3 and White will have annoying pressure in the 21.Re4 Kf7 22.Re1 Setting up the following tactic ending] 8.0–0 e5 9.a3 f6 (otherwise White plays b4 due 22...f5 losing material, but there's nothing better to the e5 weakness) 10.e3 After this move, it becomes 23.Bxe6+! Bxe6 24.Rxe6 Kxe6 25.Bc5+ Kd7 26.Rxe7+ clear that White is trying to play a quick d4 advance to Kd8 27.Re5 Rxb2 28.Rxf5 Kd7 29.Bd4 Ke6 30.Ra5 and I break open the position; if he manages to play this resigned; a very strong showing from Papin, who thus successfully Black will be in trouble, as his pieces are took the title 1–0 much less actively placed and difficult to let out 10...Be7 11.Rd1 Ne6 12.Qc4 Possible the critical moment in the game; if Black can castle without problem, he will likely be OK 12...0–0 [12...Rb8! may be tougher to deal with; 13.d4 b5 14.Qa2 (14.Nxb5 Na5) 14...cxd4 15.exd4 exd4 and White doesn't have an outright winner] 13.d4! As I calculated the consequences of 12...O-O, I seriously underestimated the power of this move; the two pins against the Queen and King make Black's position very awkward and the c8 Bishop is a serious liability 13...cxd4 14.exd4 exd4 15.Nxd4! This sacrifice is only temporary and the White pieces spring to life 15...Ncxd4 16.Be3 Qc7? Not the best decision, as White now gets a clearly better endgame [16...Bc5 is likely the best of a bad lot; 17.b4

Bb6 18.Nd5 Kh8 and White should play the seemingly slow 19.a4! when Black's pieces are badly placed and Position after 14...exd4 it's difficult to untangle and give back the piece under good circumstances] 17.Rxd4 Qxc4

The Australian Juniors (by IM Max Illingworth)

The recently concluded 2015 Australian Junior Chess Championship at Canberra Grammar School was a success for the Victorian juniors, who won 7 of the 12 main

on perhaps the most surprising victor of those, namely Haran Salasan (the new Australian Under 14 Champion). Going into the event, it was expected that favourites Ray Yang, Ethan Lim (both BHCC members) and ACT’s Dillon Hathiramani would be the main contenders for first, but 10th seeded Haran vastly outperformed his 1449 rating with his 8.5/9. Almost every winner needs a bit of luck, but the key game proved to be Haran’s Round 3 win over Ray Yang (who finished in 2nd on 8/9), annotated below.

Yang,Ray (1949) - Salasan,Haran (1449) [A00] AUS jr U14 Open Canberra AUS (3.41), 22.01.2015 [Illingworth,Max]

1.a3 d5 2.d4 Nf6 [2...c5 3.dxc5 is the idea, when White's extra a3 is useful in supporting b4 to hang on to the c5–pawn, but if Black avoids ...c5 White's a3 move starts to look wasteful.] 3.Nf3 e6 [3...c6 4.Bf4 Bf5 (4...Qb6 5.Ra2 makes a3 seem slightly useful.) 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 Bxd3 7.Qxd3 e6 should also be fine for Black.; 3...Bf5 4.c4 e6 5.Qb3 on the other hand is a bit unpleasant.] 4.c4 c5 [or 4...dxc4 5.e3 b5 (5...c5 6.Bxc4 a6 along the lines of the QGA makes sense too.) 6.a4 b4 7.Bxc4 c5= and Black is completely fine as White had to move his a-pawn twice.] 5.dxc5 [5.e3 is less original.] 5...Bxc5 6.b4 Be7 7.e3 0–0 [7...a5 8.b5 0–0 9.Bb2 Nbd7 is another approach, intending to exploit the c5 square.] 8.Bb2 dxc4! [Correctly judging the tension battle as White will lose time from the trade of queens either way.] 9.Qxd8 [9.Bxc4 Qxd1+ 10.Kxd1 won't be so different after a later Ke2.] 9...Rxd8 10.Bxc4 Bd7 [While watching the game live, I found this a bit peculiar and would have gone for] [10...a5 11.b5 b6 or; 10...b6 as the bishop is safer on b7 than c6.] 11.Ke2 [11.Nbd2 is somewhat less committal - it's clear the knight belongs on d2 to give the b2–bishop maximum scope.]

11...Bc6

12.Nc3?! [Another reason the knight is misplaced here is that White's c4–square is now quite weak. ] [12.Nbd2 Nbd7 13.Rhc1 with equality was correct.] 12...Nbd7 13.b5? [White plays as if he is better and only destroys his position as a result. It's not so unusual for the much higher-rated player to start playing the opponent instead of the position when their lower-rated player starts the game well but in doing so they can easily overpress and beat themselves.] [13.Rhd1 would again be pretty standard. Black would like to jump a knight to c4 but it's hard to arrange here, so instead 13...a5 14.b5 Bxf3+ 15.gxf3 Rdc8 16.Bb3 Nc5 17.Ba2 a4 (a bit like in the game) seems best. Black will improve his other knight with ...Ne8–d6. ] 13...Bxf3+ 14.gxf3 Rac8?! [A natural move, but] [14...Ne5! 15.Bb3 Nd3 16.Rhb1 Rac8 17.Na4 Nxb2 18.Rxb2 g6 would have been quite awkward for White as the a1– rook is tied defending the a3–pawn, but the a4–knight is also out of play.] 15.Bb3 Nc5 [15...Ne5 is no longer a threat because of 16.Ne4 Nxe4 17.fxe4 Nd3 18.Bd4= .] 16.Bc2 Nd5!? [Forcing matters, but the knight on c3 isn't very well placed so I would have played] [16...Nfd7 and ...Bf6 to pin the knight.] 17.Nxd5 Rxd5 18.Rhg1 [I'm not sure what this move does but it hardly spoils anything.] [18.Rac1] 18...g6 19.Rac1 Rh5! [A nice idea, hitting the isolated h2–pawn. The position is still equal, but this light pressure prompts White into a mistake.] 20.Be4? [20.Rh1 looks passive but the h2–pawn can't be attacked easily as 20...Bd6 is answered by 21.f4 .] 20...b6?! [Throwing away the advantage again as now the bishop can be annoying on c6.] [20...Rd8 would have won a pawn as 21.Rh1 fails to (21.Bc2 Rxh2) 21...Nxe4 22.fxe4 Rxb5 .] 21.Rgd1 [Adopting an active approach to the position, though the simple] [21.Rh1 also sufficed.] 21...Rxh2 [21...Rf8!? has the idea of threatening ...Nxe4.] 22.Be5 Rh5 23.f4 [White must have been counting on the h5–rook's inability to reenter the game.]

23...f6 24.Bd6 [By exchanging the bishop, White gets the chance to enter Black's position.] 24...Bxd6 [24...Kf7 25.Bf3 Rh4 26.Bxc5 Rxc5 27.Rxc5 Bxc5 28.Rd7+ Kf8 29.Rxa7 g5 30.fxg5 fxg5 would be close to equal.] 25.Rxd6 Kf7 [25...e5 26.Rxf6 exf4 27.Rxf4 frees the rook at the cost of the extra pawn. The position is equal.] 26.Bf3 Rh6 [26...Rh4 is a more natural square for the rook, so that ...e5 becomes a threat.]

27.Rd7+! [White takes his chance, although it doesn't really affect the evaluation.] 27...Nxd7 28.Rxc8 Ke7 29.Rc7 Kd6 30.Rxa7 e5

BHCC and CJCC venue: 21a Electra Ave., Ashwood, Vic 3147 Page 7

31.Rb7? [White thinks he's winning the b6–pawn by force, but it proves an illusion. ]

[31.Bc6! looks stronger than it is; after 31...Nc5 32.fxe5+ fxe5 33.Kf3 Rh4 34.Kg3 Rh5 35.a4 Nb3 White can't break through, still Black has to be a little careful.]

31...exf4 32.exf4 f5 [or 32...Rh4]

33.Bc6?! [White must have thought he was winning here.]

[33.a4 Rh4 34.Ke3 would still be equal.]

33...Nc5! 34.Rxb6?? [But this throws away the draw White would likely still have got after]

[34.Rb8 as the king and knight are stuck to the queenside to stop White's majority.]

34...Kc7 [And just like that, the Under 14 Champion was decided.]

35.Rb8 Kxb8 36.Ke3 Kc7 37.Kd4 Kb6 38.Ke5 Rh2 39.f3 h5 40.Be8 Rg2 41.Bxg6 Rxg6 42.Kxf5 Rg8 43.Ke5 h4 44.Kd4 0–1

Australian Junior Chess Championships 2015.

On the 8th day of the championships (24 Jan), the AUSJCL had their AGM. Most of the officials were returned to their positions except for Vice President where GM Ian Rogers had decided to retire and Peter Tsai had agreed to his nomination in absentia. He was elected unopposed. The other replacement official was the Bulletin editor. Raelene Zelesco had been performing this function for the last couple of years but has been time poor. Sabrina from SA put herself forward and was appointed unopposed.

It was reported that there was a significant increase in female participation. 20% of all entries were girls !!

The 2016 AJCC, at this stage, appears to be going to Adelaide.

A Visit to the Katoomba Chess Club (by Peter Tsai)

The Katoomba Chess Club is located in the newly constructed Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in the heart of Katoomba. The centre was opened in late 2012 and only a few minutes walk from the Katoomba train station. The club meets every Saturday from 10.30 am to 3 pm with about a dozen players, both adults and juniors. It is in a very open area with players free to wander in & out and play socially against any of the players.

Garry Millington (former member & player from the Box Hill Chess Club) has moved to Blackheath to live and sometimes attends the Katoomba Chess Club. On 31 January, I went to visit Garry at the club to see how he was getting along in the Blue Mountains as well as playing a number of games with him. It was good to see that Garry has settled in well into the community and still continues with his chess. If you want to drop a line to Garry, his email address is [email protected]

The Katoomba Chess Club is run by Glynn Curran (he is player on the right in the background with the white pieces).

Autumn Cup (by Trevor Stanning)

We have 43 entries for the Autumn Cup which has started a little earlier this year. The early start has clashed a little with the end of school holidays and entries are being accepted for round 2 (scheduled 6/2/2015) and late entrants can have a half-point bye for the first round.

Our new venue has received compliments from members who have attended the January Rookies or the Autumn Cup and it is a particular pleasure to play chess with an outside view of woodland and a setting sun.

We welcome a few newcomers to Friday events: Mitko Alekandrov, Lousanne Beeren, George Meilicke, as well as a few past members who have been absent for a while.

In Round 1 Milic Sucevic played well to get a draw against the much higher-rated Miodrag Milosevic.

2014 Chess Olympiad Team Champion! (By Elsa Yueh)

GM Ni Hua from has a current FIDE rating of 2683. He became China's 15th at the age of 19 in 2002, and in 2008 he became the second Chinese player to pass the 2700 FIDE rating. He has represented China in numerous individual and team events for many years and is a member of the winning men's team representing China at the most recent 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway.

After scoring an extraordinary result of 10.5/11 in 2015 Australian Open Championship and ascending his rating back above 2700 in Sydney, GM Ni Hua's next stop was to the second largest city in Australia, Melbourne. In addition to visiting friends and to celebrate the great victory, the champion gave a simul at the University of Melbourne in the historic 1888 building.

The event was an excellent opportunity for players of all ages to play against an Olympiad champion. Though no one defeated the Super GM, five players managed to draw against him and they were: Luke Li, Bill Jiang, Lillian Lu, Mitko Aleksandrov and Ray Yang. They each received a chess set and a memorable prize for their outstanding achievements.

Many junior players participated in their first ever simultaneous exhibition event. Lillian Lu from Box Hill Chess Club, also the only youngest girl who managed to draw with GM Ni Hua.

Memorable prizes were offered for any player GM Ni Hua giving a moment of thought against junior players. who managed a win or a draw in the simul.

GM Ni Hua's first trip to Australia was definitely a remarkable journey in which he not only conquered the highest prize event in the country by a large margin, but also he promoted chess and gave a simul opportunity for junior and adult players alike. When asked if he would be back in Australia again for another tournament, the answer was a definite: 'Yes'.
