The group have up to 3 clients and one staff person. The walks are easy with gentle gradients but you need to be a “good walker”. Then a coffee / drink nearby! On Mondays weekly 10am-1pm starting mid-April, leaving from the front of the office. Wednesday Art Group provides a fun art experience for residents of the Northern Sydney Area. You can learn new skills, experiment with different types of art like painting / collage / mixed media, and meet new people through the group of up to 6 to 8 people and 2 staff. You supply some art materials like paints and canvas; the rest are provided, as well as coffee and tea. Wednesdays 11am-1.30pm for 10 weeks. Where? I LOVE Music Therapy at Lane Cove What? Lane Cove & North Side Community Services is offering music therapy for adults of all abilities. You can learn new skills in song writing, singing and improvisation, and playing a range of instruments like keyboard, piano, guitar and more. Learning how to express yourself through music and dance will build confidence and creative capacity, with fun along the way. Highly experienced music facilitator and composer Sarah de Jong will conduct the classes, and there will be support staff on hand to assist with your needs. When? NDIA Information Sessions What? The National Disability Insurance Agency has organised, in partnership with Local Government staff, a series of sessions to inform residents about the National Disability Insurance Scheme. NDIA will organise the presenters, with time for questions. Planning for the NDIS with Independent Planners What? Individuals with disability / mental health, their family members and their supporters are invited to get their plan ready to meet with NDIA Planners. Planning your goals is a positive step to assist in your NDIS planning meeting, getting the support you want / need, creating a person centred plan with choice and control built into it. The free 2-day workshop are interactive and full of examples of successful plans and approaches. The facilitators are independent without connection to any service provider or funding body, so participants are free to discuss any situation in a safe and confidential environment. Workshops are facilitated by family members with experience in Person Centered Planning and Self-Managing supports, as well as experienced professionals from the disability/mental health industry. Responding to Suicide for Carers What? This training aims to provide a guideline on how to identify a person at risk of suicide, how to approach the subject of suicide and ask relevant questions, how to support them to seek appropriate assistance and how to identify relevant resources through the use of a plan of action in response to their distress. ADHD Speaker Evening: Antonia Canaris on “ADHD & Difficulties in Reading, Writing, Arithmetic What? Parents, teachers and other professionals assisting children and adults with ADHD are invited to hear Antonia discuss the overlap between ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia. She will also mention helpful strategies and how to find reliable advice and remediation. She is a qualified Orton-Gillingham multisensory educational therapist, and a member of the International Dyslexia Association and the Australian Dyslexia Association. Antonia is a director of Neurosensory, an educational and remedial teaching practice, specialising in multisensory learning for children and adults with dyslexia, ADHD, ASD and other learning disorders. Day to Day Living Program for Adults living with Mental Illness What? Tobacco Free and New Moves (Thursdays) and the Hearing Voices Support group (Fridays) are running, with many other programs on Monday and Tuesday. PeerZone (Fridays) aims to increase awareness about the various aspects of recovery, improve the management of symptoms by non-medical means, reduce dependency on services and improve social connections. If you want to take ownership of your recovery journey and learn how to get the best out of mental health services, attend these 3-hour workshops (with lunch, tea, coffee) every fortnight. When? Don’t Make it Worse What? This 8 week DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) integrated skills training helps carers of someone with a mental illness to acquire effective skills to manage themselves in overwhelming situations. Three areas of DBT skills being focused on in this program: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation. Commitment to participate in all 8 weeks sessions is essential. An individual interview will be conducted in order to assess suitability prior to the program. When? Carer Dementia Education: Creative Ways to Care What? Discover ways of using everyday activities to connect, have fun and share meaningful time with the person living with dementia with this free six week program. Carers will also learn strategies that may settle or cease changed behaviours, or assist with a task. This program will be delivered by Anglicare and Northside Community Forum Inc. Professionals would include teachers, speech pathologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, disability support staff, and may be able to claim their participation as continuing professional development.
