This is the second year in a row that the golf course has been so honored. We thank everyone in the community who voted for us and look forward to your next visit. Without your continuing support and the hard work of our dedicated employees, we wouldn’t be accorded this recognition. Happy New Year!

Report from the GM—Claire Richmond 360-898-2560 [email protected]

Hello Alderbrook Family & Friends,

Although 2018 will go down in the AGYC record books as year of great accomplishments, we welcome 2019 with excitement! Our passion for building a strong community continues as we remain focused on member communication, well-maintained common areas and meeting financial goals. Our AGYC departments are in full swing attending to projects and improvements preparing for the terrific year ahead.

After a quick recovery from holiday hustle and bustle, we hope you will join us for some interesting community activities filling our January calendar. Demonstrating the Board of Director’s commitment to member engagement, we begin the new year with a Saturday Board meeting on January 19 at 10am in the Clubhouse. Then, on Thursday, January 24, stay tuned for the next edition of the Not-So-Newly-Wed Game, once again hosted by Kayla Arevalo in the Business Office. Enjoy a hilarious evening of dinner entertainment observing member couples taking on relationship questions and proving how well they know (or don’t know) each other.

Supporting and staying connected to the outside community is something AGYC is known for. Our new monthly Community Care Luncheons highlight local organizations providing needed services throughout our region. Join us Saturday, January 26, from 12 to 1:30pm for presentations by Shelton Adopt-A-Pet and Habitat for Humanity. Lunch, a delicious soup and sandwich combo, is $10. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Please stop by the Clubhouse when you can. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Happy New Year!

Claire

Tree Removal Back 9 Cart Path Paving Project

There are 25 trees currently marked for potential removal for the Back 9 Cart Path Project. Additionally, seven (7) trees are also marked for removal for paving needs at Hole #4. Your Board of Directors would like to invite you, the members, to look at the trees and provide them with feedback. Please provide your feedback to any of the Board members either in person or via email.

Since non-golfers are not allowed to walk on the golf course, including on the cart paths, when the course is open for play (dawn to dusk), non-golfers who wish to review the trees marked for potential removal are encouraged to do so in a golf cart. The purpose of this rule is to protect non-golfers from being struck and injured by errant golf balls during play.

Town Hall Meeting Elicits Lively Discussions By Rhonda Westover, President of the Board of Directors

On Saturday, December 1, 2018, AGYC held its fifth and final Town Hall meeting of 2018, following meetings in January, March, May and September. The standing-room only crowd of approximately 50 members actively participated in the lively discussions.

Several topics were covered and discussed:

• Roads and Drainage: Questions were asked about the completed drainage work on Vine Maple Lane between Manzanita Drive and the golf cart crossing between #13 and #14. Several members commented that puddling is still occurring at the intersection with Michelle Drive. It appears that the eastern-most drain is higher than the surrounding road and the pothole has reappeared. However, overall, drainage much improved. [Note: The puddling will be resolved in the spring with grading and paving.]

• Hole #2: A member asked about the possibility of a bridge crossing for the new hazard area that runs most the length of the fairway on Hole #2. Players must walk around the hazard, which AGYC members gather on December 1 for a wide-ranging slows down play since no carts are allowed. discussion of issues of interest to them at the fifth Town Hall [This idea was referred to Green Committee for meeting of 2018. comments.] Photo courtesy of Mary Gin Kennedy

• Security Issues. A member asked about the possibility of registering member autos, or having decals to identify member autos, based on concerns about the string of gas siphoning and auto damage. Newly-retired emergency responder Andy Hanke emphasized that calling 911 is a more effective way to address security concerns and urged all members to call 911 for any security issues. There was also support for reviving Neighborhood Watch.

• Speed Limits and Speeding: What about a “slow down” sign on Jack Pine Lane between Vine Maple and Paintbrush Lanes? Vehicles seem to speed unnecessarily around the blind corner. Can we request the electronic radar sign from Mason County to remind AGYC members, contractors and visitors to slow down? Another suggestion was a lighted speed sign detector, similar to signs on Hwy 106. A member estimated the cost at $3,500. Another suggestion was to lower the speed limit to 20 mph. Finally, the consensus of those members attending the Town Hall was that, with all the new construction, it is time to address speeding by contractors. [Note: AGYC has reserved the Mason County Sheriff Office’s portable radar for this spring and will meet with the Sheriff’s Office for direction on implementing future security measures in the HOA.]

• PUD #1: Can we check on the possibility of refurbishing the water tank located on Vine Maple at the Composting Center similar to the work completed on the water tank on Westwood Lane?

• The Wickiup: A member group is collecting donations to buy a small climbing wall, with assistance from the GM. AGYC will track the details, such as size, placement and liability, as the project proceeds.

From the Head Pro—Sam Smith

Happy New Year from the Golf Shop! At this time, we are all looking, with anticipation, at what 2019 will bring. Resolutions are being proclaimed, and next up is making a plan to succeed. We had to postpone our December Fireside Chat. It has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 16, at 4pm. It will last about two hours depending on the depth of the conversation. We will focus on how to set up your plan to succeed in bettering your golf game. We will also have a short test on the new rules for some added fun!

Other upcoming events for the Golf Shop are the “Re-Gifter” Tournament on January 26. It is an individual stroke play format where players will be able to “re-gift” their worst three-holes, in relation to par. The entry is $10 per person. Since there are no teams, we will have three divisions—Men’s, Ladies and Guests. Each division will have its own payout. On Wednesday, January 9, we will also have our next Ladies Winter Clinic. The topic will be “Putting and Green-Side Specialty Shots.” We will have two sessions on the signup sheet but will default to the morning session if we don’t have enough sign-ups. The first session will again be at 10:30am with the second session being at 12:30pm. Lunch will be served at 11:30am, and the cost will again be $20.

The new rules are going into effect. We will be using them in our “Re-Gifter” Tournament and going forward. As you look at the new rules, I hope you’ll find them easier to understand and navigate than the previous version, but, if you ever have questions, please do not hesitate to bring them to Assistant Pro Kyle Preston or me. So putt with the flag in, take an unplayable lie from a bunker (2-stroke penalty) and learn to use these rules to your benefit.

My first full season at AGYC is coming to an end. I want to thank you all for your support of our Golf Shop and our events. We have a very active and energetic membership, and we hope to provide you with great playing opportunities in 2019!

No Grinches Here!

Mike and Rayni Lambert and Penny and Randy Shelton, standing left to right, tied for First Place in the Coed Division during the Grinch Open on Saturday, December 8. In the Men's Division, Archie Araujo and Gerry Cassel finished one stroke ahead of Bob Hurst and Michael Johnston. We had a great turnout and look forward to our next tournament on January 26 at 10am, the “Re-Gifter.”

Mens Club News By Gary Gozart

A new year is upon us and another opportunity to excel at the things we love to do.

During 2019, some will improve their golf game by practice and perhaps some lessons from our golf professionals. Some will work on their health by making better choices about their diet, or by getting more exercise, or both. Others may take up new interests in the new year, or maybe write that book that has been going through their mind for quite some time. Whatever all of us may decide to do in 2019, there is one thing that I suggest we all can try to do as we begin another year on this old planet earth. We all can try to be kinder, more thoughtful, more giving, more forgiving—because in the end it isn’t what we have accumulated or what we have accomplished, it’s how we have treated others that will be how we are remembered.

A little reminder that our 2019 Men’s Club dues should be paid by now. If you have not paid, make a mental note to do so soon. Some of us may need to write it down also because our mental notes are often forgotten notes. Please pay $58 to Alderbrook Men’s Club. Send your dues to Jim Sroke or Tim Micek or leave them in the Golf Shop.

New to Alderbrook? You are invited to join us. Beginning in April, we have regular events on Wednesdays and Fridays. Come on out and meet a bunch of knuckleheads who like to have fun. And they play golf too!

Person of Interest---Kevin Shutty, Mason County Commissioner By Jenn Devan, Foremast Editorial Team

AGYC member Kevin Shutty is serving his first term (2017-2020) as one of three Mason County Commissioners and currently chairs the Board of County Commissioners, which is the county’s legislative authority. The commissioners serve as chief administrators for several important county operations, such as public roads/public works, emergency services and planning of unincorporated areas. They direct public policy by serving on a wide variety of community boards and multi- county boards. Additionally, they have some quasi-judicial duties.

When deciding to run for District 2 Commissioner, Kevin met with many Mason County residents and believed they were ready for new leadership. He noted, “Voices from the past can’t take us where we need to go.” As a commissioner, he would like to see Mason County become a leader in the region and a competitor across the state. His vision is for a stronger economy, safer neighborhoods and expanded opportunity for every resident.

As a member of the Commission, Kevin has oversight of the county’s budget and spending. He believes the county must live within its means and cannot buy more government than its taxpayers are willing and able to pay for. The county’s bond rating was downgraded in December 2017 by S&P Global because of a deteriorating budgetary performance. He believes the reforms he has championed and had enacted, such as policies to protect the county’s reserve dollars and ensure a balanced budget, will improve the financial outlook going forward.

Kevin enjoys being a commissioner and meeting with the people of Mason County to help in any way he can. He keeps mobile office hours in his predominantly rural district and emphasizes his intention to be available to the people of Mason County. “I am proud to call Mason County my home,” he said,” and I am committed to being a full-time advocate for the people of our community.”

Kevin was raised in Pennsylvania and attended college at Pennsylvania State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and has just completed a Master of Professional Studies degree in Community and Economic Development. It was Kevin’s wife, Catherine, whose influence brought him to Washington state as she was originally from Silverdale. She works as District Nurse for the North Mason School District and is currently enrolled in Washington State University’s School of Nursing where she is working toward a doctorate as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

The Shuttys resided in Shelton for three years before moving to Alderbrook in 2015. Kevin says that the move to Alderbrook was an easy transition, and he felt welcome in the community. He has embraced the Alderbrook community and feels that we have embraced him.

Kevin does not golf as often as he would like, but he is first to point out that there are many different options to pursue at AGYC. He and Catherine enjoy gardening in their home garden, and he is an avid reader. Kevin and Catherine also enjoy walking their two Labrador Retrievers, Maggie and Ellie, and make frequent trips with them to the off-leash area at the Wickiup. He also owns a Cockapoo that he inherited when his mother passed away.

Kevin encourages all AGYC members to attend the County Commission meetings on the first, second and third Tuesday of each month at 9am and on the fourth Tuesday at 6pm in the Mason County Commission Chambers located at 411 N 5th Street in Shelton.

Building & Architectural Committee continued from page 4 By Rod Heidemann, Chair of the Building & Architectural Committee

The Building and Architectural (B&A) Committee met on December 10 and discussed the following topics. The next meeting of the B&A Committee is Monday, January 14, at 3pm.

Old Business: • Fencing Policy: With a lack of B&A Committee cohesiveness on a fencing policy, the committee will look to a review of the existing Policy and Procedures. Possible revisions will be presented during the next B&A meeting. • 191 E Michelle Drive Landscaping: A previously-approved landscaping plan was amended to include an 18-inch block wall on the golf course side. The amended plan was approved. • 90 E Eastwood Lane: The greenhouse request was moved to the next meeting. A committee member was unable review request. New Business: • 171 E Susan Lane: The request for a variance of one foot toward the golf course to install a deck was approved. • E Dogwood Lane: The request for new construction lacked details. A committee member was assigned to follow up. • 40 E Rhododendron Lane: New construction and variance. A variance was requested for a drain field within five feet of the side and ten feet from the front or back. The B&A Committee requires a copy of the building plans, landscape plan, paint colors and a building permit receipt. A committee member was assigned to assist. A motion to approve the request for the setback for the drain field was approved. Alderbrook Properties: • Blackberry Lane/Blackberry Court: New construction and a variance was requested for a new design for a two story home (Twanoh). 1200 sf 1st floor, 600 sf, 2 rooms, 2nd floor. No street address has been assigned yet, and the building permit hasn’t been issued yet. Construction is to start at the end of January or early February. A setback variance from 25 feet to 15 feet from the Blackberry Lane property line was requested, and a setback variance from 25 feet to 21 feet on Blackberry Court property line was requested. The new construction and the variance were approved. • 10 E Blackberry Lane: New construction and variance. The variance is for two drip lines and room for parking, 7.5 feet from the garage to the front property line, because of a significant slope in the back. Further review is required and was assigned to a B&A Committee member for an update during the January meeting. • 741 E Country Club Drive: New construction using a new house plan, not previously reviewed by the B&A Committee, was requested. Alderbrook Properties is to submit a copy of new house plan. The new construction permit was approved.

Activities Committee Jingles All Month Long By Marcia Hawkins, Chair of the Activities Committee

Paint ‘n Sip. Amazed were 20 participants who did not know they could actually paint a picture of a holiday truck worthy of hanging on the wall. Our instructor Nicole Frazier, who owns My Painted Heart in Shelton, packed up her supplies and brought them to the Clubhouse on December 5 for a night of fun, laughs and art. We hope to host another Paint ‘n Sip event in February.

Golf Cart Caroling 2018. Rain, light drizzle and a couple of showers did not deter 13 golf carts from making the trek around the community on December 13. Decked out with lights, lights, lights, gift-wrapped packages, bows, wreaths, Christmas trees and reindeer, Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Grinch joined the parade as Michael Johnston and Carol Sroke led the way. The judges awarded cash prizes to the top three golf carts. Aspiring Paint ‘n Sip artists are hard at The winners are: Colleen McEachin and Carol Sroke, first place; Mark work on their canvases. and Erika North, second place; and Tim Micek and Carol Norbeck (aka Santa and the Mrs.), third place. Afterwards, carolers gathered for hot chocolate and cookies at the Clubhouse.

Upcoming Events. The Activities Committee will host another Bunco Night on Thursday, January 17, from 5 to 7pm. The entry fee is $10, and the group breaks for dinner at 6pm.

The Paint ‘n Sip class is all smiles on December 5 as they show off their paintings of an old truck hauling a Christmas tree.

Golf cart carolers prepare for their choral rounds in the community on December 13. Seen in Santa costumes in the center of the photo are Carol Sroke (left) and Colleen McEachin (right), whose golf cart won first place in the cart decorating contest. On a rainy night, it’s a lot easier to travel by golf cart to spread holiday cheer. Here participating golf carts are lined up and ready to go ”a-caroling.”

AGYC’s Holiday Party Was a Smashing Success

The annual AGYC Holiday Party has all the ingredients for success—great food, great company, great ambience, great fun! Here AGYC members enjoy themselves at the party on December 8. At least 170 members attended the event. That’s when the Clubhouse ran out of chairs! The 125 pounds of canned and boxed food collected in AGYC’s Holiday Food Drive got a “wow!” from the attendants when it was delivered to the Saints’ Pantry Food Bank in Shelton by Activities Committee Chair Marcia Hawkins. Love INC was equally delighted with the load of toys (transported in two “SUV sleighs”) delivered by Bill and Kelly Holtz and Gary and Marilyn Larson.

A group of AGYC members relaxes over dinner and drinks on December 8 while other members (shown in the background) are indulging themselves with the many delicacies prepared by Chefs Leon, Damien and Dina. Thank you, chefs, for an exquisite buffet.

Freezin’ for a Reason Raising Money for the Lambert/Westover Chill Thrill By Rayni Lambert

Several Men’s Club members challenged Hood Canal Lions Club President Mike Lambert to take the Polar Bear Plunge this year. He laughed and said. “not for less than $500,” thinking that would never happen, but, big surprise, $700 has already been pledged so he’s committed to jump. When AGYC Board of Directors President Rhonda Westover heard about the challenge, she said she’d jump, too, if the total reaches $1,500. Mike added he’d do a back flip if $1,500 is pledged.

Now it’s our turn to be cool. The Lions Club is asking AGYC members to donate to the Polar Bear Plunge so that Mike and Rhonda both have to chill out on February 9. 100% of the funds raised will be equally distributed among the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and the Mason County Volunteer Fire Departments in Union, Hoodsport and Lake Cushman.

Contact Lion Archie Araujo, Lion Mike’s handler, to pledge donations. Let him know it’s for the Lambert/ Westover Chill Thrill.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree By Jeff Bickford, Chair of the Environment Committee

Okay, so the Christmas holiday is over, and you're trying to figure out what to do with that dry, crispy Christmas tree that's still in your living room. Don't toss it out in the backyard and wait until the composting center is open in March when you can recycle it right now!

Through Monday, January 7, you can drop off your tree at AGYC's materials storage yard located along Manzanita Drive (and just west of Fairway Lane) for free. Look for the orange cone that the maintenance staff has placed at the site and place your tree there. They will grind up the trees they receive and use those grindings on nearby walking paths. Please be sure that the trees are unflocked and free of any ornaments, lights or tinsel.

If you don't get your tree down until after January 7, you can still take your tree to the Union Transfer Station on McReavy Road for recycling, but at a cost. The transfer station is open on Sundays and Mondays from 9am to 4pm.

The Environment Committee will meet on Saturday, January 12, at 9am.
