Wednesday 21st June 06, Results of Rathfarnham WSAF Winter League Well done to Michael Freeley who won this years Rathfarnham WSAF Winter cross country League, Michael has also posted pbs over 1500m and 3000m this season. In Second place was John McHugh and in third was PJ Claffey. It is intended for the Summer 5km league to start up on Saturday 15th July at 10.30, so put it in your diary. Wednesday 21st June 06, Results of IrishMilersClub Track Meeting, Irishtown Well done to Paul Fleming who posted a fast time in the Mens 1500m of 3.54.4 in placing 8th, also well done to Ronan Kearns who broke the 4 minute barrier in the same race. In the mens 800m Eoin Flynn finished in 3rd place with 1.54.97, in a race that was won by James Nolan in 1.50. Jonathon Hughes was third in the Mens B 1500m with 4.13 and Brian Coleman ran 4.14 to place 5th. Sunday 18th June 06, Results of European Cup Division 2 for Men, Ireland gain Promotion Victories in the last two events of the European Cup Division 2 for men at Banska Bystrica enabled Ireland gain promotion to Division 1 for 2007. After the women retained their position in Prague both teams will now compete together in the higher division next year. It was nerve wracking with the hosts Slovakia out in front with 129.5 pts and Ireland 2nd 109 pts with Israel and Denmark one point behind with 128 pt. It was the 3000 metres victory of Mark Kenneally and the 4x400 win by Brian Murphy, Antoine Burke, Paul McKee and David Gillick that clinched it. Tuesday 6th June 06, Summary of Leinster Track & Field Championships, Tullamore Eileen O'Keeffe threw the hammer 67.83 metres and also won the discus in 43.66 metres. There was a spendid double for Mary McLoone in the triple jump 12.57 metres and the long jump 6.03 metres. Brian Murphy won the 400 metres in a seasonal best of 47.76 good preparation for Bratislava next week. Gordon Kennedy won the 200 metres in 22.30 ( -0.8 ). Agaiin Laura Cogan upped her pb for the shot with 13.45 metres.Darragh O'Farell won the long jump in 7.13 metres. Decent performances from Padraig White in winning the hammer in 55.54 metres and Ger Nagle the discus in 47.68 metres and the shot in 14.59 metes. Tuesday 6th June 06, International Results from this weekend Cragg set his new PB of 13:08.97 when finishing fifth behind five Kenyans in Randalls Island. David Gillick opened his 400m season by finishing third in 47.03 in Zaragoza, Spain. Joanne Cuddihy ran a 400m PB of 52.40 in Uden, Holland. Paul Hession was second in the 200m in 20.98 and third in the 100m in 10.52. Ciara Sheehy and Michelle Carey won the 200m and 400m hurdles respectively in 23.72 and 57.49. Linda Byrne was second in the 1,500m with a PB (4: 24.18), while David Campbell won the 800m in a PB of 1:48.88. Sinead Delahunty won the 1,500m in Flanders in 4:10.11.     2008 Irish Olympic Team Briefing Athletics Ireland Team Story so far After a disappointing Athens Olympics for athletics, there has been a changing of the guard with only five of the thirteen qualified athletes being present four years ago. There have been several standout performances in those four years such as Derval O’Rourke’s World indoor Championships Gold and silver in the European Championships in 2006. David Gillick has also won two European Indoor titles at 400m. The Irish Sports Council in conjunction with Athletics Ireland made timely interventions post European Championships which have proved very positive. The Irish Athletics team has improved year on year and had a successful World Championship in 2007 in Japan with eight athletes finishing in the top 16 of their respective events. Paul Hession is in very strong form after a double in the 100m & 200m in the Cork City Sports. Both Robert Heffernan and David Gillick have set new national records this season for the 20km Walk and the 400m respectively. Olive Loughnane is another athlete to watch after a personal best performance at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge finishing in 6 th place. Supporting the team All the athletes who will be representing Ireland in the Bird’s Nest stadium receive both financial and medical support from the Irish Sports Council. Derval O’Rourke is the only contracted athlete with eight athletes receiving World Class level funding. The remaining qualified athletes receive funding at International level. Athletics Ireland provides a High Performance programme funded by the Irish Sports Council and has 80 athletes in total with a support strategy that includes warm weather training camps, medical support and preparation for international competitions.

    Evolution of Irish National Records 1861-2020 Event Note Athlete Competition Venue Date The task of developing a table of the Progression of the Irish National Records, from before the birth of organised Athletics in the late 19th Century up to the present day, inevitably presents the compilers with a number of difficult problems. First, of course, is the difficulty that arises from the existence of parallel governing organisations during significant periods of this history and the practice of their maintaining non co-ordinated sets of records. We have also needed to recognise that up until almost the last quarter of the 20th century performances achieved outside Ireland were not accorded status as Irish National Records. Thus, most notoriously perhaps, the winning performances of Bob Tisdall and Ron Delany at the Olympics of 1932 and 1956 were never, in their day, recognised as Irish Records. But there were many others, perhaps less prominent, which because they were achieved outside Ireland were never subjected to those levels of appropriate scrutiny which are customarily accorded to Irish record performances. A further problem arises from the fact that until sometime in the early-1930s the National Record was deemed to be the best authenticated performance made in Ireland whether by a local athlete or by an overseas visitor. Thus an Official List of Records published, for example, in 1924 credited Irish Records to Wyndham Halswelle (SCO., 440y), Hugh Welsh (SCO.,1 Mile), Alvin Kraenzlein (USA, 120yH), and Ralph Rose (USA, Shot Putt). The particular significance of this in the context of our project is that, therefore, a performance by an Irish athlete superior to an earlier Irish Record but inferior to that achieved by an overseas athlete, was not considered for ratification and so, not subjected to the higher levels of scrutiny customarily applied when considering whether to award the accolade of “Irish Record” to a particular performance.
