It is a huge tribute to our small army of volunteers, who turn up unfailingly year after year, that the race is alive and prospering – thank you all. But the most important person is you, the participant. Without you, there would be no race and we are very grateful for you taking the time and effort to support us. If you have been here before, you know what to expect and we hope it lives up to your previous experience. If it’s your first time then you are doubly welcome and we hope to make it as good a race as possible for you. For Jared, it was another fantastic top-eight finish and it was in the lesser of his two Olympic events. With the Olympic 50km event this week, Jared upped the ante even further, taking his second successive Olympic 50km silver medal and recording a 2+ minute PB time of 3:36:53, also breaking the Olympic record into the bargain. What a performance! Walker of the Week! 50KM MEN'S RACEWALK, OLYMPIC GAMES, THE MALL, LONDON, SATURDAY 11 AUGUST 2012 The men's Olympic 50km walk started at 9AM at the Mall in London and I was one of the many spectators who lined the 2km loop to cheer on the contestants. SPÓRT ÉIREANN SPORT IRELAND The Rio Review The official report into Ireland's campaign for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games RIO 2016 REVIEW Foreword The Olympic and Paralympic review process is an essential component of the Irish high performance system. The implementation of the recommendations of the quadrennial reviews has been a driver of Irish high performance programmes for individual sports and the system as a whole. The Rio Review process has been comprehensive and robust. The critical feature of this Review is that the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) took a greater level of control in debriefing their own experiences. This Review reflects the views of all the key players within the high performance system. Endorsed by Sport Ireland, it is a mandate for the NGBs to fully implement the recommendations that will improve the high performance system in Ireland. There were outstanding performances in Rio at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic roll of honour received a new addition in Rowing, with Sailing repeating its podium success achieved in Moscow 1980, demonstrating Ireland's ability to be competitive in multiple disciplines. Team Ireland has built on the success of Beijing and London, and notwithstanding problems that arose, Rio was a clear demonstration that Ireland can compete at the very highest levels of international sport. Sport Ireland is committed to the ongoing development of the Sport Ireland Institute and adding to the extensive facilities on the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus. These are real commitments to high performance sport in Ireland that will make a significant difference to Irish athletes who aspire to compete at the top level. -

Editorial People all over the world love race walking. It started here, and now reaches into every continent. I often find myself in contact with people in far-off exotic locations. I’ve just recently returned from racing in Switzerland and France. Faces become familiar from race to race abroad, and people eventually introduce themselves and over time become friends. Many readers have told me how they have made long- term friends at overseas events. Several people at the Swiss event turned up six days later at the French event 500 miles away, and supported each other just because they had that one common link. Race Walking is treated slightly differently within each country, but walkers have a huge respect for each other whether they are Olympians or just fitness walkers. UK walkers race abroad in many countries each year, and welcome overseas walkers to events here. This magazine is now sent to readers in twenty different countries, and growing... People queuing behind me at the post office each month really hate me, as I have so many international magazines to send, one-by-one! On my holiday I found the source of the River Danube and ceremoniously set one of my old trainers floating down it. An hour later, the other one was set floating down the River Rhine. (Please don’t litter!) You can’t just throw away something that has brought you so much enjoyment! Am I crazy? Aren’t all race walkers.. -
Athletes Being Present Four Years Ago
2008 Irish Olympic Team Briefing Athletics Ireland Team Story so far After a disappointing Athens Olympics for athletics, there has been a changing of the guard with only five of the thirteen qualified athletes being present four years ago. There have been several standout performances in those four years such as Derval O’Rourke’s World indoor Championships Gold and silver in the European Championships in 2006. David Gillick has also won two European Indoor titles at 400m. The Irish Sports Council in conjunction with Athletics Ireland made timely interventions post European Championships which have proved very positive. The Irish Athletics team has improved year on year and had a successful World Championship in 2007 in Japan with eight athletes finishing in the top 16 of their respective events. Paul Hession is in very strong form after a double in the 100m & 200m in the Cork City Sports. Both Robert Heffernan and David Gillick have set new national records this season for the 20km Walk and the 400m respectively. Olive Loughnane is another athlete to watch after a personal best performance at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge finishing in 6 th place. Supporting the team All the athletes who will be representing Ireland in the Bird’s Nest stadium receive both financial and medical support from the Irish Sports Council. Derval O’Rourke is the only contracted athlete with eight athletes receiving World Class level funding. The remaining qualified athletes receive funding at International level. Athletics Ireland provides a High Performance programme funded by the Irish Sports Council and has 80 athletes in total with a support strategy that includes warm weather training camps, medical support and preparation for international competitions.
