A similar eclecticism and scope also surfaced in his solo work, which couched his charmingly gravelly voice in a rustic yet rich swamp pop fusion of country, blues, and gospel. Born Claude Russell Bridges on April 2, 1942, in Lawton, Oklahoma, he began studying classical piano at age three, a decade later adopting the trumpet and forming his first band. At 14, Russell lied about his age to land a gig at a Tulsa nightclub, playing behind Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before touring in support of Jerry Lee Lewis. Two years later, he settled in Los Angeles, studying guitar under the legendary James Burton and appearing on sessions with Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell. As a member of Spector’s renowned studio group, Russell played on many of the finest pop singles of the ’60s, also arranging classics like Ike & Tina Turner’s monumental “River Deep, Mountain High”; other hits bearing his input include the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ “This Diamond Ring,” and Herb Alpert’s “A Taste of Honey.” In 1967, Russell built his own recording studio, teaming with guitarist Marc Benno to record the acclaimed Look Inside the Asylum Choir LP. -

Charles Diamond Pennywell & the Fairlanes / Sunlover's Shreveport Doo Wop to West Coast Soul By Charlie Horner With Contributions from Pamela Horner city, next to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It's always been an important music city, though it of- ten doesn't get the recognition it deserves. At one time or another, the Shreveport area was the home to important singers and musicians of all genres, including blues (Lead Belly), gospel (Ever Ready Gospel Singers), country & western (Hank Wil- liams, Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves) and rock-a-billy (Dale Hawkins), along with rhythm & blues, rock & roll and of course Cajun music. Shreveport's "Louisiana Hayride” broadcasts played a pivotal role in the music careers of both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. Shreveport was the home of Stan Lewis's Paula, Jewel and Ronn record labels and the birthplace of Nashville music mogul Shelby Sin- gleton. Shreveport was a major hub in black mu- sic's “Chitlin’ Circuit”. Still, precious little research has been done on Shreveport's 1950’s African American music scene. Charles Pennywell began singing at the age of ten but really began to take it seriously when he got to high school. Influenced by r&b vocal groups like the Spaniels, Dells, Five Royales and Five Sat- ins, Charles and some friends formed a singing group of their own. MY SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE GRAND OLE OPRY By Wayne Hogan Herald•Citizen, Cookeville, TN Sunday, 9 December 2012, pg. C•4 ‘Writer’s Corner’ Editor’s note: This was originally written by Hogan in 1993. They call it the “Grand Ole Opry.” That’s what former newspaper reporter George D. Hay, its inventor, named it not long after the first group of performers had stood before their open mikes that first Saturday night and had their down•home music and vaudeville•comic routines beamed out over Nashville’s WSM•650 “clear•channel” radio to nearly all of America, way back in 1925. Nineteen hundred and twenty five. The year Nashville’s venerable Grand Ole Opry was born. It’s hardly missed a heartbeat since. Almost since its first moments, the Grand Ole Opry has been Mecca to the millions who’ve, over the years, come to Nashville to savor the finest in “country” music. It was not till a few short years ago, through, that I became one of those “savorers.” For a long time, I hated “country music” (which, as I’m sure you know, has been called “hillbilly music” much of its life and mine). Could barely stand to think of it, much less listen to it. Well, to make what could easily be a longer story shorter, Susan and I’d often talked about getting a couple of tickets and driving the 80 miles to Nashville some Saturday night to experience this “Grand Ole Opry” thing in person. See if it was all that our mind’s eye image had it cracked up to be. -

RESOLUTION NO. 156 OF 2014 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO DEDICATE MILAM STREET BETWEEN COMMON STREET AND AUSTIN PLACE IN HONOR OF JAMES BURTON ON HIS 75 TH BIRTHDAY AND TO OTHERWISE PROVIDE WITH RESPECT THERETO. BY: COUNCILMAN JEFF EVERSON WHEREAS , Councilman Jeff Everson has requested that Milam Street between Common Street and Austin Place be dedicated in honor of James Burton on his 75 th birthday; and WHEREAS, James Burton was born on August 21, 1939; and WHEREAS, James Burton began playing the guitar at the age of 13 , and developed a style all of his own to become “the guitar players guitar player”; and WHEREAS, James Burton w ork as a session guitarist lead him to work with some the most famous musicians in the world; and WHEREAS, after being in the Ricky Nelson’s Ban d , James Burton became the lead guitarist for Elvis Presley from 1969 until Elvis’ untimely passing in 1977; and WHEREAS , James Burton career has taken him to many countries where he has performed shows keeping Elvis music alive; and WHEREAS, over the years James has performed with John Denver, Emmy Lou Harris, Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Richards, Eric Clampton, Brad Paisley, Gram Parson s and many others; and WHEREAS, James Burton is a multiple Grammy winner , and he is in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of fame. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Shreveport in due, legal and regular session convened, that the Mayor on behalf of the City is authorized to dedicate Milam Street between Common Street and Austin Place in honor of James Burton, during his 75th birthday celebration. -

John Fogerty Is Rehearsing for His first Extended Live Shows in More Than a Decade
May 21, 1997--- LOS ANGELES---The clouds of mystery are lifting over the mountainside studio where John Fogerty is rehearsing for his first extended live shows in more than a decade. Wearing a green plaid workshirt and pressed blue jeans, the creative force behind Creedence Clearwater Revival is preparing to hit the road to promote his new "Blue Moon Swamp" record, released Tuesday on Warner Bros. But the majority of the dates in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago will consist of Creedence hits. Fronting a quartet, Fogerty will even play some of the classics through vintage '60s gear. Fogerty has never leaned on Creedence songs as a solo act. Coming to terms with the past may account for the clarity of "Blue Moon Swamp." Full of dobros, guitars and passionate vocals, it is Fogerty's most rootsy album since his self-titled 1975 solo debut. Then again, maybe the clarity was already in place. "It came first," Fogerty says before rehearsal. "I get a lot of the clarity from my wife, Julie (Kramer, who hails from Elkhart, Ind.). Her positiveness helps me every day. That spilled over into my directness with the music, and I became very clear with who I should be. And that's a good thing to know, because there's been times in my life where I wasn't that sure. "(The dark, high-tech 1986 release) `Eye of the Zombie' is certainly a great example. So are some of the lost soul meanderings of the '70s, when I made an ill- fated record called `Whodo' that shows up in bootlegs at flea markets. -

Then I dump—I take it right out of—out of it and shoot it right into the Alesis or either to Nuendo which I used to mix with. It’s a—to me, it’s as good as Pro Tools.
