1948 - London Vern McGrew was only two years removed from winning the Texas state high school high jump title for Houston’s Lamar H.S., but the lanky youngster won the U.S. Olympic Trials with a lifetime-best 1928 - Amsterdam 6-8.25 clearance and he finished 14th in London. McGrew would go on to win the 1950 NCAA title. The 1948 Games had a decidedly Rice flavor, as legendary coach Emmett Brunson was on the staff , known by journalists as “the Texas as an assistant coach. Flyer”, would become Rice’s first world-record- setter in 1929, zipping to a 9.5 in the 100-yards. In 1928 he won the NCAA 100y and 220y titles, and went on to finish sixth in the semifinals of the 100-meters at Amsterdam. Bracey was fourth in the Olympic Trials, running four tough 100m races in a single day.

1964 - Tokyo In 1964, Fred Hansen was preparing for dental school after finishing his Rice track career in 1963, and he made a startling improvement to become the best pole vaulter in the world. Entering the Tokyo Games as the favorite after setting three world records during the lead-in, the Cuero product endured a gruelling 8+-hour competition on Oct. 17. He had first-attempt clearances at 4.70m, 4.80m, 4.85m and 5.00m, but at 5.10m/16-8.75 he missed twice. Never before had the U.S. failed to win the Olympic gold in the pole vault. On his third attempt, Hansen flew over the bar to the delight of the American team and fans, keeping the national winning streak alive.

Claude Bracey 1952 - Helsinki Jim Gerhardt was a multi-talented athlete for the Owls, but he Ed Red, who holds the distinction never really competed for Rice in the event that got him to the of having the shortest full name in Olympics. Gerhardt scored for the Owls in the long jump, sprints Olympic history, was the only U.S. and throws, and was also a basketball letterwinner. His Olympic athlete to qualify for the javelin final. moment, though, came in the triple jump. Gerhardt was second Red, who was third at the Olympic in the Olympic Trials with a lifetime-best 49-7.75, and he finished Trials, placed 11th in Tokyo at 234-8. 11th at Helsinki at 48-2.5.

Long-time Owls trainer Eddie Wojecki was on the medical staff in Helsinki, joining Emmett Brunson as the only Rice non-athlete Olympians in .

1976 - Montreal 1984 - Los Angeles Dave Roberts became the first-ever Gawain Guy prepped at Pasadena’s Dobie High School, but three-time winner of the NCAA he was born in Jamaica, and it was for his native nation pole vault in 1971-73, and after that he ran in Los Angeles. Guy, Rice’s best-ever miler, graduating from Rice he continued competed in the 1500-meters at Los Angeles, running his stellar career with two world 3:52.04 in the first round. He returned to Rice and set a records and a U.S. national title school record of 3:41.0 in the metric mile in 1985 that stood in 1974.
