The KNIGHT REVISION of HORNBOSTEL-SACHS: a new look at musical instrument classification by Roderic C. Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below). -

Pay special attention to the section where he talks about buzzing the lips to create sound, and how tightening and loosening the buzzing lips create different sounds as the air passes through the instrument’s tubing. 2. Tell the students: There many instruments that create sound the very same way—but without the valves to press. These instruments use ONLY the lips to play different notes! Mystery Instrument Trivia! 3. Students will explore some unusual and distinctive instruments that make sound using only the buzzing lips and lip pressure—no valves. Students should use online searches to match the trivia clues with the instrument names! Mystery Instrument Trivia - CLUES: This instrument was used in many places around the world to announce that the mail had arrived. Even today, a picture of this instrument is the official logo of the national mail delivery service in many countries. -

Characterization and' Taxonomy of Historic Brass Musical Instruments from ae Acoustical Standpoint Arnold Myers Ph.D. The University of Edinburgh 1998 I" V *\- Abstract The conceptual bases of existing classification schemes for brasswind are examined. The requirements of a taxonomy relating to the character of brass musical instruments as experienced by players and listeners are discussed. Various directly and indirectly measurable physical parameters are defined. The utility of these parameters in classification is assessed in a number of case studies on instruments in museums and collections. The evolution of instrument design since 1750 in terms of these characterization criteria is outlined. Abstract The historically informed movement has made it increasingly apparent that orchestras can no longer interpret Beethoven, Mahler, Mozart, and Bach in exactly the same manner. It is now incumbent upon each member of the orchestra, as well as the conductor, to be aware of historic performance traditions in order to color the music with appropriate gestures. It is therefore important for horn players to explore the hand horn traditions of the baroque, classical, and early romantic periods in an effort to perform the correct inflections in a way that the composer might have expected the music to sound. As an example, in the second movement of the Beethoven’s third symphony, beginning in the second half of the eighteenth measure from the end of the movement and going into the next measure, the second horn goes from a concert middle C down a half step to a B natural. Original practice would cause the B natural to be ¾ covered which would have caused tension in the sound. Modern horns can just depress second valve to play the note giving a completely different color. The intention of this document is to inform current and future generations of hornists techniques to not only re-create sounds of the period on modern instruments, but also to create new pathways to learning repertoire through deconstructing the orchestral passages, creating new ways towards a complete understanding of the literature. -

Wick 2001 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to recognize and explore the use of natural horn techniques in modern horn playing. Music composed for the horn by the great Classicists, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, contains subtleties for the valveless instrument that can sometimes be accomplished with the valved horn. Natural horn techniques applied to the modern valved horn can also be used in literature intended for the valved instrument. Of the compositions originally written for valved horn, I consider two categories: pieces in which the composer 1) directs the performer to use a natural horn technique, and 2) does not direct such a technique but where the use of the technique can enhance the effect intended by the composer. This document examines the use of techniques specific to the natural horn applied to modern valved horn performance in selected repertoire from the 18th through 20th centuries. Natural horn techniques explored in this document include right hand movements, embouchure flexibility and facility, ornamentation fluidity, oral cavity adjustments, and air stream usage.
