NORTH BEND — The Bay Area is starting to reap the rewards of a massive motor coach rally that took place in 2012. Today will conclude the Oregon Coast RV Jamboree, a new event at The Mill Casino-Hotel sponsored by Guaranty RV Super Centers. The event dozens of vehicles visiting, and included a Menasha forest tour and traditional tribal salmon bake. Ray Doering, communications manager for the Mill, says the Bay Area can expect more of these rallies in the future coming off the success of last year’s massive Family Motor Coach Association Northwest Rally.

Many states have banned, or soon will ban, texting and phoning while you drive because it’s so distracting. However, it’s a well-known fact that eating, fiddling with the radio, singing along with Beyonce, making hand-gestures to other drivers and wiping the ketchup that has dribbled onto your shirt from that burger you just ate while driving are all perfectly safe activi- ties. I think we’ll all feel better if we know that we were killed by a guy eating a cheeseburger and not by a jerk on his cell- phone. There’s just something comforting about it. Funny thing though, when drivers finish their phone calls, they usually don’t throw their phones out the window. But when they’ve finished the burger and the soda, they toss the remains out the window, wherever they happen to be — just like we Kudos all do. Sen. Committee clears nomination of FBI head WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate Judiciary Com- mittee has unanimously approved the nomination of James Comey to be director of the FBI, clearing the way for a full Senate vote. The 18-0 committee vote will send Comey’s nomination to the Senate floor. The soon- est that vote could take place would be early next week. President Barack Obama nominated the 52-year-old Comey in June to succeed outgoing FBI Director Robert Mueller. Comey spent 15 years as a federal prosecutor before serving as the no. 2 official in the Justice Department of President George W. Bush. He is best known for resisting that administration’s demands for warrantless wiretapping. The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democ- ratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Ver- mont, praised Comey and thanked Republicans for help- ing to expedite his nomination.

C M C M Y K B2 •The World • Thursday, July18,2013 Y K Sports O’Meara is a big early surprise

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) — Mark O’Meara turned back the clock to 1998. Rory McIlroy can’t figure out what he was doing 11 months ago. While Zach Johnson seized the British Open lead with a 6-under 66 today, the biggest surprise was O’Meara. He ripped through the front nine on his way to a 4-under 67 at sunny Muirfield as though he was in his prime — not a 56-year- old who has combined to shoot a combined 76 over par over the past decade at golf’s oldest major. The Open champion from 1998 at Birkdale made the turn with a 5-under 31 before stumbling with his first bogey at the 10th. He lipped out a birdie try on 18, leaving him one stroke behind. Not that it’s unusual for an old-timer to play well in the Open. Four years ago, Tom Watson nearly won at age 59. Greg Norman led after 54 holes well into his 50s. The biggest disappoint- ment of the opening round was McIlroy, who only last August won his second major title with a runaway victory at the PGA Championship. He showed no signs of snapping out of his baffling slump this season, struggling mightily to a 79 that marked the second- worst Open round. The only time McIlroy shot worse was an 80 at St. Andrews in 2010, but that was more a product of a bru- tal wind than poor shots. This time, he could blame only himself. Time and again, he found himself whacking at the ball out of the rough or trying to escape the treacherous bunkers. His most telling sequence came at the 15th, where he drove it into the tall grass, chopped it out just short of the green, then sent a putt screaming past the flag — right into a bunker on the other side. He let out a sigh that said everything — a once-dominant player who, as Paul Azinger said earlier in the week, looked “adrift.” “I wish I could stand here and tell you guys what’s wrong and how to make it right,” McIlroy said. “I don’t know what you can do. You just have to try and play your way out. BY EMILY THORNTON The World Rainbow Rabbits will showcase their fuzzy pets for the first time at this year’s fair. Nicole Erenfeld, leader of the group, said the young girls of Rainbow Rabbits decided to participate in 4-H after checking out last year’s fair. She said the girls got excited about animals and chose the small animals because they seemed like a good beginner pet. “Rabbits are an easy intro for animals,”Erenfeld said. Only one of the five girls, 10-year-old Bella Erenfeld, will actually compete at the fair because participants must be at least in fourth grade. Before that, they are considered Cloverbuds and can’t compete for prizes. Erenfeld said she was learning right along with the girls. “Honestly, I’m brand new at this,”she said. The five youngsters in her group are: Bella Erenfeld, 10, Aunika Miller, 9, Analise Miller, 7, Lyvia Erenfeld, 7, and Madeline Miller, 8.

They eat out of your hands.” Another animal show group, Wings and Things, is also new to 4-H this year. Their specialty is poultry and insects. Leader Randi Marchant said the kids chose those groups because her daughter, Jocelyn Marchant, liked them and found other children who felt the same. “I knew 4-H had a project and wanted to find others who enjoyed bugs,”Randi Marchant said. “I like that it’s connected to the university.
