Michael FisherEvery once in a while a really fascinating, creative gem of a book comes along that I want to read and study, for years, because it is so rich. Subba, coming from a unique background intellectually, as an artist-philosopher, and from the far East, really brings some exciting light on the subject of the human being's relationship to fear. This is not a new topic, and Subba does cite several modern and postmodern philosophers who have tackled the Fear Problem (as I call it), yet fearism is an entirely new and fresh way of framing the troubled and interesting relationship that humans have had to fear for as early as we have recorded history. As a fearologist for 25 yrs myself, I am always looking for a fresh outlook on the topic fear and its relationship to a whole ecology of individual and communal dynamics of what seems to bring out the best and worst in humans. I agree with Subba, that what has not been studied and written about is seeing the entire world of human behavior, philosophies, theories and practices through the lens of fear--meaning, through a lens called fearism, which rigorously and imaginatively begins to see that most all human activity has been (and still is) largely determined by fear. Subba, like myself, then set out to suggest that fear is much much more complex than we usually are taught. This book helps one re-orient to a philosophy of life, health and well-being, by which fear is re-discovered a new, not merely re-cycled or re-hashed under the rhetorics of old ideas about fear and its management.A philosophy of fearism, in Subba's eyes, gives fear, finally, its due value as a shaper of human behavior and thought, if not our destiny. He avoids any ideology per se, not overly religious and spiritual, not overly psychological, but a good balance of secular wisdom in this book with spiritual insights, and so much more. He definitely is a philosopher of his own, with a style of his own, at least as best I can make out. As a Western English-as-first-language scholar on fear and fearlessness, it is hard sometimes to understand the translation of Subba in this work. He is Nepalese and so are the translators of the work, so the English translations come out strange if not incomprehensible at times. This can be disconcerting, as I found. But, because I am so keen on this topic, I am willing to stick in and pull out the 'gems' from the rubble. Subba's work, to be accepted in the West and by English-as-first-language scholars is going to need a lot of re-interpreting.I too have theorized about fearism for some time, and Subba is not the first to use this notion, and indeed, there are several different perspectives on the concept fearism itself. Readers ought to be aware of these differences and the particular optimistic bias that Subba approaches when articulating his philosophy of fearism. This work needs to be studied, and critiqued. I have dedicated a recent article "Towards a Theory of Fearism" to this very task (a free pdf is available, go to http://csiie.org/mod/page/view.php?id=3, and scroll down for pdf)--and I look forward to engaging with Subba and others interested in seeing the world through the eyes of the philosophy of fear(ism) or whatever other term we want to call it. I also like to call it: seeing the world of fear through the lens of a philosophy of fearlessness. Again, there are many angles to pursue this insight and study. Most important however, is to keep expanding our current understanding and approaches to understanding fear (and our knowledges about fear)-- and in that sense, Subba has done a supreme job.0 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It can not be say that every one can take advantage but most of the people like fear patientBy Desh SubbaPhilosophy of Fearism is a philosophy of fear. Fearism describes source, effect, treatment of fear. It has many more explanation with illustrations. There are many people in the world who are suffering from various kinds of fear. They are looking treatment, but no way. So far as fearism can help fear patient to reduce their fear. It can not be say that every one can take advantage but most of the people like fear patient, fear doctor, student, job holder etc can take advantage. Without reading a book how can do judgement.
