Title: Wilson Lumpkin letters Dates: 1833-1834 Extent: 0.05 cubic feet (1 folder) Identification: MS 0508 Biographical/Historical Note Wilson Lumpkin (1783-1870) was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on January 14, 1783 to John Lumpkin and Lucy Hopson Lumpkin. While he was still a young child, Lumpkin's family moved to Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Lumpkin married twice, first to Elizabeth Walker, with whom he had six surviving children, and second to Annis Hopkins, with whom he had three children. He served on the Georgia State Legislature and was a member of Congress, 1815-187 and 1827- 1831. Lumpkin served two terms as Governor of Georgia, holding office from 1831-1835. Afterwards, he was appointed U.S. commissioner to the Cherokee Indians, a position he held from 1836 until 1837; Lumpkin was a proponent of the removal of the Cherokee from Georgia. He also served as a U.S. senator and a trustee of the University of Georgia. Lumpkin died on December 28, 1870 in Athens, Georgia. Scope and Content Note This collection contains two letters from Wilson Lumpkin to John Gayle, governor of Alabama, 1833 and 1834. In the first letter, Lumpkin writes that he is transmitting the affidavit of James R. Guerry regarding William Alday, who was charged with stealing a slave; Alday was a fugitive in Alabama at the time of the letter. The second letter requests that Augustus L. Glover, jailed in Alabama and wanted in Georgia for murdering James R. Ross, only be released to Georgia agents. Index Terms Fugitives from justice. Gayle, John, 1792-1859.
