ICE SKATING LESSONS FOR ALL ABILITY LEVELS.

Learn how to skate quickly and safely in an exciting environment by joining a group lesson class at The University School of Milwau- kee. Build self-confidence, sportsmanship, meet new friends, and have fun on the ice. Students are evaluated by highly qualified instructors the first day of class to ensure that the class level matches the student’s ability. Don’t wait until Winter to learn or refresh ice skating skills.

Bridge Program: The Bridge Program is for experienced ice skaters who have passed through the first three Basic Skills levels in a Learn to Skate Program. Here the skaters will choreograph skills to music, practice rhythms and flows, and begin to jump and spin. There is a class recital in December and in March. A commitment to attendance is important. Ages 7-adult

Snow Plow Sam Program: Snow Plow Sam is for young children who have not been spent much time on the ice. Emphasis is placed on proper balance, falling down safely and getting back up, forward and backward skating, following mazes on the ice, and having fun. Ages 3-7

Basic Skills Program: The Basic Skills classes are designed for the young skater who has passed the Snow Plow Sam level, or for the older beginning skater who feels confident standing and alkingw on the ice. Skaters are moved quickly through the various skill levels and learn how to skate fluently forward and backward, balance and glide on one foot, and turn from front to back while moving. Skaters will also be able to stop, jump, and play an assortment of games that they will be able to teach their friends. Ages 5-Adult

Tots Program: The Tot program is for the very young pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children. The skaters begin in the Snow Plow Sam program and quickly graduate to the Basic Skills Program. The Tots and Toys program allows the young children to play games with toys as thy learn how to balance and skate forwards and backwards. For children who would like to play hockey, we allow sticks and pucks on the ice after they are able to skate. Ages 3-7

Trying to find an extremely low cost, low time commitment, fun athletic opportunity for your child? Looking for a great way to boost your child’s confidence and self-esteem? Hoping for ways to have your son or daughter make new friends? Have a son or daughter who is not naturally athletic but you would like to see give sports a try? If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of these questions, then it is time for you to consider joining our Youth Softball program!!

Our three co-ed youth leagues cover boys and girls from K-5 through 8th grade, and are run by volunteer parents with a passion for teaching the game to young people. Beginners with zero baseball or softball experience have joined these leagues at all age levels and have grown with confidence as they learn the game and make meaningful contributions to their teams! Experienced athletes participating in soccer, basketball, lacrosse, fast pitch softball and even Little League have found this to be a wonderful alternative and a chance to enjoy competitive sports in a more recreational, family-friendly setting. Many of these kids are able to participate in two sports during the spring because our league has an extremely low time commitment of 1-3 hours per week, with an expectation that there will be occasional conflicts and an incredibly low cost that makes limited participation a non-issue!

In each league, one volunteer parent serves as the Manager, and is responsible for organizing practices, soliciting a sponsor, handling team communications, and coordinating all team activities. The manager is given a refund of the cost of registering one child from their family into the softball program in exchange for his or her service to the league. Additional volunteer coaches are sought to assist the manager with technical skills and other support duties. Practices are generally once or twice per week until games start, but are at the discretion of each manager. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please email [email protected]

Players are randomly assigned to teams based on the school they attend, but we honor and encourage requests to be paired with other friends to help with car-pooling and to make it a comfortable and enjoyable experience for the kids. Returning players are au- tomatically assigned the same team they played on the year before. There are no rules with regard to how many boys or girls are on each team’s roster or in the field of play at any given time, but efforts are made to maintain competitive integrity in the Junior and Senior leagues. Managers ensure that all players receive an ample amount of playing time regardless of ability. Games in the Junior and Senior leagues are umpired by adult recreation staff. To minimize disruption to family vacation plans, our seasons in all three leagues will conclude by July 19th. It is acceptable for players to make only 8 or 9 of the 12 games each season due to conflicts.

PARENT PITCH: Parent pitch is for those just finishing K5 through 1st grade. This league uses a soft, squishy ball. No scores or league standings are kept, but players are introduced to the fundamentals of batting, running bases and fielding under the watchful eye of several adult parent volunteers. Games are generally played on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

JUNIOR BOYS/GIRLS: The Junior league is for boys & girls just finishing 3rd thru 5th grade, and uses an 11” softball. Scores and league standings are kept, and teams finishing with a winning record are recognized with individual trophies at the annual Awards Banquet. Games are played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and there is an all-star game for those selected.

SENIOR BOYS/GIRLS: The Senior league is for boys & girls just finishing 6th thru 8th grade, and uses a 12” softball. Scores and league standings are kept, and teams finishing with a winning record are recognized with individual trophies at the annual Awards Banquet. Games are played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and there is an all-star game for those selected.

NicHoops 3v3 League Welcome to NicHoops 3v3!! 3v3 is great for youth player development as they improve basketball IQ, court awareness, and basketball skill. As player development coaches, we’re big fans of 3 on 3 basketball. We think it’s awesome for skill development at all age levels because... • You get MORE touches on the ball. (Six passes is an average possession in 3on3, meaning each player will have the ball at least TWICE every possession.) • You have more space to try new moves and practice new skills. • Your defensive footwork and agility gets challenged because you have to cover more distance with fewer players on the court. • You IMPROVE passing, dribbling, shooting, cutting, spacing, rebounding and defense. • All players have equal opportunity to make plays and help their team win.

NicHoops 3v3 is a five week season with two back-to-back games played on Saturday mornings throughout April and into the May. There is a girls league and a boys league offering a competitive experience to all youth. Teams should consist of 3-5 ball players within their grade level. Teams will be divided up among grade level.

Restorative Yoga Workshop Ideal for those needing some pampering and a recharge of mind/body. Open to all levels who need a very chill yoga experience, mostly floor postures.

Enjoy an evening of gentle, restorative yin yoga - combining supported restful posture, breath and guided meditation - with an extended savasana (relaxation and meditation) finale. Learn postures and techniques to reduce stress and fatigue – through a short series of long-hold supported floor postures designed for your body to release deep tension and to more deeply relax. When you slow your yoga practice down it becomes a practice of exploring what your body needs and how your body feels - meeting it’s walls and hopefully breaking them down. This class will mindfully guide you into stillness and will leave you feeling rejuvenated, balanced and tranquil. Be prepared to be on the floor much of the time in recline, seated and inverted postures.

Pickleball Yes, PICKLEBALL – the fun game with the funny name, is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation! Created in the backyard of Washington Congressman Joel Pritchard in 1965, it is a combination of badminton, tennis and table tennis and is enjoyed by all age groups. Using a badminton-sized court, tennis-height net, table tennis-type paddle and a baseball-sized whiffle ball, usually played by doubles, this game has few rules and is far less strenuous than tennis. It is easy to learn and provides plenty of exercise and eye-hand coordination; a game of strategy for both men and women, you don’t have to be tall and powerful. Want to watch a video? Go to www.USAPA.org, click on link “What is Pickleball?” under Training and Court Info link or sit in on any Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday open court session to see if you’d like it.

Pickleball players can purchase a 10-play punch card in the Recreation Office (Monday – Friday - 8am – 4pm) for $30 for resi- dents/$33 for non-residents, good for any day of play and DOES NOT EXPIRE. Each participant is responsible for bringing and punching their card each time they play. Once the card is full, another can be purchased. Drop in rate for participants without a punch card is a $5.00 fee.
