The Translation of the Book of Mormon Here we see a replica of the golden plates, a page of the original trans- lation of the Book of Mormon, and the press upon which the first cop- ies of the Book of Mormon were printed. The Restoration of the Gospel Here we learn of the restoration and reorganization of Christ’s Church on earth. We see artifacts from the Peter Whitmer home. Interactive touch screens connect us with other sites of the Restoration. Ohio and Missouri Here we learn of the growth of the Church in Kirtland, Ohio, and the simultaneous attempt by the Saints to establish Zion in Independence, Missouri. The Liberty Jail exhibit is roughly the same size and height as the cell where Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Caleb Baldwin, and others were held for over four months. Baugh On 6 April 1839, Joseph Smith, his brother Hyrum, Caleb Baldwin, Alexander McRae, and Lyman Wight were taken from the jail in Liberty, Missouri, and placed in the custody of a strong guard assigned to transport them to Gallatin in Daviess County for what was expected to be a formal hearing on the charge of treason against the state. The Smiths and Wight had been in state custody for more than five months, Baldwin and McRae slightly less. For over four months, the five men had languished in the loath- some Liberty dungeon. However, unbeknown to them at the time, in less than three weeks, they would be free men and would be reunited with their families and friends in Illinois. The Gallatin hearing, the release of Joseph Smith and his companions, and their flight across northern Missouri com- prise one of the concluding chapters of the Mormon experience in Missouri. The Arrest and Incarceration of the Mormon Prisoners Following nearly three months of civil conflict between the Mormons and their Missouri neighbors, Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, George W. Robinson, Lyman Wight, and Parley P. Pratt were arrested at Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri, on 31 October 1838. The following day, Hyrum Smith and Amasa Lyman were taken into custody. The arresting officers were actually part of the state militia called out by Missouri Governor Lilburn W. -

Karl Keller, who has edited the fol- lowing manuscript lecture by Sidney Rigdon's son, is a frequent contributor to DIALOGUE and a member of the Board of Editors; he has recently taken a position as Assistant Professor of English at San Diego State College, has just published an article on Emerson in AMERICAN LITERATURE, and has a book on Emerson and an anthology of Mormon literature in preparation. Not very long after the death of Sidney Rigdon, the influential preacher and compatriate to Joseph Smith in the first years of the Church, his son, J o h n Wickliffe Rigdon, wrote an apology for his father. He delivered it at Alfred University and other colleges and communities in the Central New Y o r k area around the turn of t h e century, in an attempt to revive interest in his almost entirely for- gotten famous family and in an attempt to clear his father's name once and for all of criticisms connected with the founding of Mormonism. -

Hartley “If I am called here again, in case of a noncompliance of a treaty made,” Major General John B. Clark of the Missouri State militia warned Latter-day Saints captives, “you need not expect any mercy, but extermination, for I am determined the governor’s orders shall be executed.” General Clark was implementing orders he had received from Missouri’s Governor Lilburn W. Boggs, dated 27 October 1838, which stated: “Your orders are, therefore, to hasten your operations with all possible speed. The Mormons must be treat- ed as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the state if neces- sary for the public peace.”1 Extermination, a powerful word, means to eradicate but also implies killing.2 Governor Boggs’s extermination order called for a nineteenth-cen- tury version of what in recent discussions of Serbian treatment of Kosovars is termed “ethnic cleansing.” This article focuses on how the Latter-day Saint people complied with that extermination order and managed, with war-reduced resources and mostly during wintertime, to leave the state and seek safety in Quincy, Illinois, and other places of refuge.3 The “Mormon War” in Missouri The Mormon troubles in upper Missouri are well documented and explained in several published histories.4 In a nutshell, what in Missouri annals is termed “the Mormon War” broke out in the summer and fall of 1838, resulting in shooting, house burning, pillaging of crops and livestock, WILLIAM G. -

Baugh On October 27, 1838, after nearly three months of hostilities between Mormon and Missouri settlers in Daviess, Carroll, Ray, and Caldwell Counties, Missouri, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs signed an executive order authorizing the state militia to subdue the Mormon populace and force their surrender, and ordered them to evacuate the state.1 The order was carried out by Samuel D. Lucas, a major general in the state militia and the commander of the troops from Jackson and Lafayette Counties. The day before issuing the “Extermination Order,” Boggs relieved Major General David R. Atchison of his command of the state militia in the Northern District.2 Atchison’s release probably stemmed from the fact that he had served as legal counsel to Joseph Smith and was at least partially sympathetic of the Mormons. Boggs replaced Atchison with John B. Clark of Howard County. However, since Clark was not on the scene to take charge, Lucas assumed command. On October 31, General Lucas and his officers negotiated a peaceful, albeit unfair settlement with a five-man Mormon delegation led by George M. Hinkle, commander of the Caldwell County militia. The final conditions of surrender called for the Mormons to make an appropriation of property to cover any indemnities caused during the Missouri conflict, give up their arms, ALEX A N D ER L. -

Foundations of Faith at Adam-ondi-Ahman Elder Ken Wilcock – 11 October 2020 Grateful to be here with you, Grateful to be here as a Senior Missionary at this Sacred Location for the past 19 months and to be associated with the other Missionaries who have consecrated 20 months of their lives to serve the Lord here. Grateful for the acquaintances that we have made with so many of you gathered here this beautiful Sunday Afternoon. Previous to our call here, we met with a business acquaintance of mine who had served here as Director in 2016. He suggested that we should purchase the book “Sacred Places in Missouri” by Lamar Berrett. As a novice student of history, I had already bought one, but had no idea at the time that this book would launch me on to the path of adventure that it did. Soon after my wife and I arrived here in March of last year, I went out exploring and started finding these Orange 1” steel pipe post in various locations. Looking into the book, “Sacred Places in Missouri” it mentions these markers placed at certain locations and by that I was able to learn what these markers identified. The book mentioned that 15 of these posts had been placed and it soon became a quest of mine to find all 15. Brigham Young University sent Archeological Research Crews out here during the summers between 1979 and 1984 to excavate and locate as many as the foundations of buildings and structures that had been established by the Saints who lived in in 1838 as they could. -

Bray: Caleb Baldwin 73 Caleb Baldwin: Prison Companion to Joseph Smith Justin R. Bray “He has shone himself appointed as a preacher of the gospil on all ac- catins [occasions]. He is a worthy brother.”1 Such was the description of Caleb Baldwin by his missionary companion, Levi Jackman, in the mid- 1830s. Although often overlooked in the annals of early Mormon his- tory, Baldwin played an active role in some of its most significant events. And while as a scribe he possessed an able pen, he failed to keep a record of his involvement during the early years of the Restoration. However, from among some of those he knew and with whom he served, mention is made of his activities and service—enough to piece together a life-sketch of this faith- ful Latter-day Saint. Early Life Caleb Baldwin was born in Nobletown, New York, on September 2, 1791. The name Baldwin comes from Germanic elements: bald meaning bold, and wine meaning friend or protector. The name characterized Baldwin as he so- journed through life. Generally, he was quiet and low-key, but when he spoke he was known for having had a “fiery tongue” in defending his friends, espe- cially the Prophet Joseph Smith.2 The Baldwin family originated in England, but sometime in the early 1600s his ancestors immigrated to North America. His grandfather fought in the American Revolution, and Caleb himself served as an ensign in the War of 1812 under Captain Charles Parker.3 After his military service, Caleb moved to Ohio where he and his brother, Rune, met and married two sisters, Nancy and Calista, on the same day— JUSTIN R. -
