Besides their fear of a loss of power and control, another factor was their ignorance of both practical knowledge and the benefits that could accrue to them from peaceful relations with representatives of Western nations, most particu- larly the resident missionaries. Richard had become convinced that educa- tion in practical Western learning was the key to change. Chinese leaders could develop an understanding of the laws of God working in the forces of nature and then learn how to use these forces for the benefit of their people. The ultimate purpose of this Western learning, however, was to open these leaders to the Christian faith. He served as a missionary in China in the 1930s. He was captured by the Japanese and put in a concentration camp. He died there. During internment he wrote a Manual of Christian Discipleship for serious Christians. Here’s his teachings about a daily quiet time. Liddell’s Morning Quiet Time: One way to know God is to spend time with him each day. Set aside a specific time for prayer and Bible study and plan to stick to it... Ask yourself, Have I surrendered this new day to God and will I seek and obey the guidance of the Holy Spirit throughout its hours? Wait until you can honestly say, Yes... Here are some suggestions to help you make the most of that time: 1. Be still. God, the source of all truth and love, is here. Take time to realize his presence. Be glad that he speaks when we listen and hears when we pray. Thank him for his Spirit living in us. -

By providing a survey and interpretation of the Christian presence in China from the 7th century to the present, this course intends to answer this question from various angles. We will draw the lessons from history, point to the characters of the missions and Church in China, highlight the contemporary situation, project the future developments, and discuss the ways the churches from the other parts of the world relate to the Church in China. The experiences of Chinese Church will be examined in the larger context of global Christian movement, and the past and future relationships between the churches in China and the West will be explored. The history of the Protestant movement in the country will receive primary attention and review. The Learning Objectives of this course are stated as follows: Learning Objectives 1. Students will have the opportunities to understand the cultural, social and historical contexts of the missions and the Church in China throughout the ages: whether dominated by Confucianism or Marxism. -

Eric Liddell's Lasting Olympic Impact on Chinese Culture By Rev Dr Ed & Janice Hird - published in the July 2019 Light Magazine How often does a Chinese-born missionary to China become the subject of an academy award- winning movie?1 The people of China see Eric Liddell as their first Olympic gold medalist, even recently unveiling a statue of him.2 His daughter Patricia Liddell commented, "My father was multi-faceted, he didn't just appeal to religious people. He was born in China, he worked in China, he died in China. He's their Olympic hero." Duncan Hamilton poignantly commented, “In Chinese eyes, he is a true son of their country; he belongs to no one else.”3 In Chariots of Fire, he is shown running for the glory of God in the 1924 Olympics.4 Eric commented, “I never prayed that I would win a race. I have of course prayed about the athletic meetings, asking that in this too, God might be glorified.”5 A leading sports reporter summed him up as ‘probably the most illustrious type of muscular Christianity ever known.’6 Nicknamed the flying Scotsman, he famously said: “God made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.”7 When asked how he ran so quickly, he often said that he ran as fast as he could for the first half of a race, and then asked God to help him run even faster for the second half.8 Eric won so much gold and silver that his mother hid his trophies under her bed at night, in case of burglary.9 Missionary families often make great sacrifices for the sake of the lost. -

This paper will be divided into two parts, the first part will a Glass Darkly: make an observation and analysis on the dialogue which occurred between Master Sheng Yen and Fa Xian through their writing and On the Study of Modern Chinese will deal with the following subjects: how the dialogue between Buddhism Through Protestant two great monks were made, the way the dialogue carried on, and * the contents of the dialogue. The second part of this paper will Missionary Sources focus on the dialectic speeches which appeared in many places of the books, including: see / not to see, sthiti / abolish, past / future. These dialectic dialogues made Master Sheng Yen’s traveling Gregory Adam Scott Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Religion, Columbia University writings not only special in having his own characteristic but also made his traveling writings of great importance and deep meanings in the history of Chinese Buddhist literature. ▎Abstract KEYWORDS: Master Sheng Yen, travel literature, Fa Xian, Fo- European-language scholarship on Buddhism in nineteenth— guo-ji and early twentieth—century China has traditionally relied heavily on sources originally produced by Christian missionary scholars. While the field has since broadened its scope to include a wide variety of sources, including Chinese-language and ethnographic studies, missionary writings continue to be widely cited today; * T his paper is based on presentations originally given at the North American Graduate Student Conference on Buddhist Studies in Toronto in April 2010, and at the Third International Conference of the Sheng Yen Educational Foundation in Taipei in May 2010. -

1 JESSE BOARDMAN HARTWELL COLLECTION AR 884 Prepared by: Dorothy Davis Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives June, 2007 Updated March, 2012 2 Jesse Boardman Hartwell Collection AR 884 Summary Main Entry: Jesse Boardman Hartwell Collection Date Span: 1855 – 1921 Abstract: Collection includes ten volumes of letter books and some additional writings from Hartwell, a travel journal, a mission report, history of his mission work in north China, and events such as the Tai Ping Rebellion and uprisings and resistance to mission efforts. Size: 4.5 linear ft. (five boxes) Collection #: AR 884 Biographical Sketch Jesse Boardman Hartwell, Jr. served as a missionary in northern China from 1858 – 1875 and from 1889 – 1912. From 1875 to 1889, Hartwell worked with the Chinese in California, as Superintendent of Baptist Missions in San Francisco, and organized the first Chinese Baptist church in the United States. After graduating from Furman University in South Carolina, he taught mathematics at Mt. Lebanon University, where his father served as president. Hartwell became a missionary, in 1858, and left for China, where he served in the Shantung (Shandong) Province. In 1861, he began the first Protestant church in China, north of Shanghai, and assisted refugees during the Tai Ping Rebellion (1851 – 1864). Hartwell also served as president of the Bush Theological Seminary, later North China Baptist College, in Hwanghsien. Jesse Boardman Hartwell, Jr. was born in 1835 in Darlington, South Carolina, to Jesse Boardman Hartwell and Margaret Foreman Hartwell. He married Eliza H. Jewett of Macon, Georgia in 1858. Eliza died in Tengchow, China, in 1870, and left four children, Jesse, Nellie, Anna, and John. -

In order to ensure competitive advantage, they must be able to promote high levels of professional performance. This research is part of this theme and aims to analyze how the job characteristics, professional knowledge, skills, competencies, training and work engagement influence the job evaluation and, consequently, the performance of employees of six public hospitals, China. The sample consists of 546 subjects aged between 21 and 58 years (M = 37.9; SD = 8.73), with the majority being females (55.5%). For the collection of data, such scales were used as the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS), the Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Personal Characteristics Scale (KSAOS), the Competencies and Training Scale (CTS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The results obtained show that the job characteristics, the professional knowledge, the skills, the training and the work engagement influence the job evaluation. It was also found that the male respondents, those belonging to the older age group, those with higher academic qualifications and those with higher positions present higher average performance in all dimensions under study. -
