INTRODUCTION BY G. TALBOT. It is important to know exactly where type specimens are to be found. The British Museum set an example by publishing catalogues of some of their Rhopalocera types, and we hope this will be continued. Mr. Gabriel, who was responsible for that work, has been asked by Mr. Joicey to prepare a catalogue for the Hill Museum. The original description of almost every name in this catalogue has been examined for the correct reference, and where the sex or habitat was wrongly quoted, the necessary correction has been made. -

REMARQUES PRÉALABLES 1 – Présentation sommaire du Togo Situé dans la sous région Ouest africaine, le Togo est un petit pays effilé coincé entre le Bénin à l’Est et le Ghana à l’Ouest. Il est limité au Nord par le Burkina Faso et au Sud par le Golfe de Guinée. Sa superficie est de 56 600 km2. La population est de 4 500 000 habitants avec une densité moyenne de 25 habitants / Km2. La proportion de la femme est de 62%. La zone guinéenne du Togo qui comprend les régions Maritimes et des Plateaux compte 76,6% de pauvre dont 65,5% extrêmement pauvre1. Sur le plan économique, l’évolution du PIB par habitant du Togo en général a progressivement baissé depuis les années 1997 à la suite de la situation socio politique du pays, jointe aux problèmes climatiques qui ont eu des impacts négatifs sur la flore, la faune et la production agricole2. En vue de freiner la pression anthropique sur les ressources naturelles et réduire la pauvreté des populations tributaires des ressources animales et végétales, les divers programme de développement3 proposent dans leur plan d’action, le développement des activités génératrices de revenus afin d’orienter les activités de ces exploitants. -

WILLIAMS. http://www.lepsocafrica.org/?p=publications&s=atb Updated 7 June 2020 Genus Elymnias Hübner, 1818 Palmflies Type-species: Elymnias jynx Hübner, 1818 (= Papilio hypermnestra Linnaeus, 1763). Zuträge Samml. exot. Schmett. 1: 12. Lamas (2010) notes that Papilio hypermnestra Linnaeus, 1763 is an invalid junior homonym of Papilio hypermnestra Scopoli, 1763 (currently treated as a synonym of Zerynthia polyxena ([Schiffermüller], 1775) (Papilionidae: Zerynthiini). However, Lamas suggests that longstanding usage will be less disruptive for both of these species if Scopoli's name is suppressed under the plenary powers of the ICZN. = Elymniopsis Fruhstorfer, 1907. Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift, Iris 20: 171, 173 (157- 252). Type-species: Papilio phegea Fabricius, by subsequent designation (Hemming, 1943. Proceedings of the Royal Entomological Society of London (B) 12: 24 (23-30).). Synonym of Elymnias Hübner, 1818. Hemming, 1943, syn. nov. Elymniopsis Fruhstorfer, 1907. Larsen, 2005a: 283, stat. n. Elymnias Hübner, 1818. Wei et al., 2017. Note: Gardiner (2010b: 150) considers Elymniopsis to be a junior synonym of Elymnias. He states: “For the moment I follow Hemming (1943) who synonymized the African Elymniopsis Fruhstorfer, 1907 with the Oriental Elymnias Hübner, [1818]. I also use the genus name Elymnias as Peña et al. (2006) showed the close similarity in the DNA sequence of the two genera and suggested the use of Elymnias for bammakoo.” However, neither Peña et al. (2006) nor Gardiner (2010b) made a formal taxonomic change. The change was formally made by Wei et al., 2017. The genus Elymnias belongs to the Family Nymphalidae Rafinesque, 1815; Subfamily Satyrinae Boisduval, 1833; Tribe Elymniini Herrich-Schaeffer, 1864. -

Chapter 10 The Butterflies and Skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) of Angola: An Updated Checklist Luís F. Mendes, A. Bivar-de-Sousa, and Mark C. Williams Abstract Presently, 792 species/subspecies of butterflies and skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are known from Angola, a country with a rich diversity of habitats, but where extensive areas remain unsurveyed and where systematic collecting pro- grammes have not been undertaken. Only three species were known from Angola in 1820. From the beginning of the twenty-first century, many new species have been described and more than 220 faunistic novelties have been assigned. As a whole, of the 792 taxa now listed for Angola, 57 species/subspecies are endemic and almost the same number are known to be near-endemics, shared by Angola and by one or another neighbouring country. The Nymphalidae are the most diverse family. The Lycaenidae and Papilionidae have the highest levels of endemism. A revised check- list with taxonomic and ecological notes is presented and the development of knowl- edge of the superfamily over time in Angola is analysed. BUTTERFLIES AT AFI MOUNTAINS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY --- Report of work progress July 2010 (Update of previous report, Feb 2009) OSKAR BRATTSTRÖM ([email protected]) Previous efforts As far as I know the only published report of butterflies from Afi Mountains Wildlife Sanctuary is from a joint report on Cross River butterflies (Knoop & Warren 2005). In this report there is included at list of butterflies from Afi Mountains documented by Duke P. Knoop and Inaoyom Sunday Imong who collected within the sanctuary for some days (exact number not reported) and recorded 139 species. The species found in this survey are listed in Appendix 1. Some records have been deleted since new revisions in taxonomy/ phylogeography have made them obsolete (Falcuna gitte, Euriphene veronica, Euriphene simplex). Survey efforts I have surveyed butterflies at Afi Mountains Wildlife Sanctuary at four different occasions. The first two visits were just quick stops as tourist at Afi Drill Ranch and the “survey” consisted of visual identification and some photographic work and resulted in 101 recorded species. My initial experience of the region was positive and therefore two longer periods have now been spent (20 Nov-2 Dec 2008 and 11-25 Feb 2009) with the sole purpose of surveying the butterflies in the area. At both occasions Drill Ranch has been used as base for daily surveys but an additional five nights were recently spent at higher elevations (see special section). After this initial survey a first report was written (February 2009) and this report is an updated version of the previous report including new records from two visits made 25-27 Jun 2009 and 25-30 Mar 2010. -

However, these mining activities are in conflict with and threaten the sustainable utilisation and conservation of biodiversity. We used butterflies, a known bioindicator species as surrogates to measure the level of change in vegetation within Tarkwa Gold Mines (TGM) in Ghana. Butterfly assemblages were sampled within the concession and characterised in terms of diversity indices and vegetation type. Transect counts, aerial netting and charaxes trapping were employed to assess butterfly assemblages. -
