WINNIPEG CHINESE CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY CENTRE PROFILE Winnipeg is a city of many cultures of which the Chinese community has always been an integral and significant part. Over the last few decades, as the number of Chinese immigrants increased, so has the need for redeveloping Winnipeg’s Chinatown. In 1981, the redevelopment became a reality with the support of the three levels of government through the Winnipeg Core Area Initiative and the Chinese community itself. The Winnipeg Chinatown Corporation was established in 1981, and in 1983 the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre was incorporated as part the overall development project in response to a survey conducted in 1982 wherein 90% of the Chinese in Winnipeg indicated a need for such a facility. OBJECTIVES • To promote and advance the awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the Chinese culture in relation to the multi-cultural mosaic of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada. • To increase understanding between the various Chinese and non- Chinese organizations in Manitoba. • To encourage public understanding of matters relating to the affairs of the Chinese Community. • To provide facilities for educational, cultural and recreational purposes. 1 WINNIPEG CHINESE CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY CENTRE BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2007 – 2008 The Rt. Traditionally, the next AGM should be held in March 2008. However, at the recommendation of the treasurer and the auditors, WCCCC’s AGM should be held in November annually to better reflect the Centre’s fiscal year in the financial statements. Subsequently, the WCCCC Board has decided to hold its AGM in November as recommended. As in the previous years, the past year from April 1, 2007 till the present, the Centre has been actively undertaking many worthwhile projects in order to fulfill our goals and objectives. I am very pleased to report that during my recent trip to China with Philip Chang in June 2007, we have made a tentative agreement with the city of Kaifeng, Province of Henan, China to send a youth folk arts troupe to perform at Folklorama 2008 at the Chinese Pavilion. As well, we were able to solicit partial funding commitment from the Chinese government for the China Garden project at the Millennium library. On Friday, August 10, 2007, at the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural & Community Centre’s multipurpose room, we hosted a photo exhibition and a traditional Chinese banquet at the Golden Terrace Restaurant to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong special administrative region. Both events were very successful and we have hnoured guests from Toronto in attendance including Deputy Consul General Li Zhengming of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto, and Director Bassinio So of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada), China in Toronto. After the successful partnership with the Winnipeg Public Library to display a photo exhibition of the <Tibet 24 Hours> at the Millennium Library, the Centre and the Winnipeg Public Library launched another photo exhibition, <Dynamic Beijing>from September 7 to October 30, 2007. With more than 100 beautiful and elegant pictures, <Dynamic Beijing>vividly display that Beijing is a fascinating and dynamic city. The exhibit originally scheduled to run from September 7 to October 30, 2007. However, due to the great interest of the general public, it has been extended to November 12, 2007. The Centre and Downtown Biz continued to provide summer concert series at the China garden this summer. As well, a karaoke singing contest was held with the help of U of M students and Downtown Biz. In addition, a Jade and Pearl concert: a musical collaboration between the Chinese and Filipino community was held in the Winnipeg Art Gallery on September 16. Together with the Friends of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, the Chrysanthemum Festival was officially introduced to public at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory on October 4. As well, a free admission concert of the Chinese Opera musical enjoyment was held in the Centre on October 13 at the Centre. The Winnipeg Chinese Community Foundation fund initiated by the Centre has raised over $150,000.00 and generated about $7,000 interest. Detailed report is given by Dr. Patrick Choy at this AGM. Moreover, I am proud to report that in this Spring, the Centre and the <Manitoba Chinese Tribune>rallied the community to raise $27,539.29 to help a young U of M student,Hao Shou from China to battle against lung cancer. 5 Our biannual Golden Dragon Awards Gala to be held on November 13, 2007, honouring two outstanding individuals: Mr. Hartley Richardson and Dr. Patrick Choy is progressing nicely as planned. We anticipate that there will be over 500 guests attending this noteworthy event. We are confident that it will be another successful year to raise most needed funds for the Centre. Undoubtedly, the upcoming year will be eventful, exciting and challenging. First of all, I would like to inform you in advance that the Centre has chosen February 7, 2008 (first day of the year of the rat) to host our traditional Chinese New Year banquet at the Kum Koon Garden Restaurant. I hope you can all join us to celebrate this spectacular festival. In closing, I would like to thank the efforts of the board of directors and, in particular, the staff and volunteers. The Center’s success is largely due to their dedicated contributions. Thank you very much for your support. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Holiday Season and a happy, healthy & peaceful New Year. Dr. Joseph Du, CM., OM, FAAP, FRCP(c), MD 余岳兴医生 Community Volunteer Income Tax Program Report -Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre The 2007 community volunteer income tax program for the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre (WCCCC) has been very successful this year. It’s been a few years since the start of the program sponsored by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) with the help from Spencer Leung, Qin Zhou, and Ricky Wong from the CRA. We were more organized this year from past experience. The computer donations program from the CRA really helped the organization to better serve the targeted groups (less waiting time) and did more efiling of income tax returns. We had two income tax return and income tax software information training sessions consists of training 12 volunteers on how the income tax system works, and how to file an income tax return. There were scheduled in two afternoons. We had two income tax learn how to file your own income tax return knowledge classes, one in Mandarin, and one in Cantonese for about 82 new immigrants and low-income families. We had four income tax filing clinics (appointments and ongoing). This year, the volunteers had filed approximately 470 income tax returns for the low- income families. The comments we got from the people we helped were all positive, especially for the Cantonese and Mandarin classes. We were THE place to obtain income tax information, learn about the Canadian income tax system, and file income tax return for the Chinese new immigrants and low-income family in Cantonese and Mandarin.
