Members Ramallah is paved with memories, fragranced with the spirits of those who wrote its his- tory. Ramallah remains a witness of an everlasting identity that can never be wiped away. Its generations successively carried the legacy of its founder Rashed Al-Haddadin, who had always desired it to be a model city and strived with his successors towards this goal until it became a national beacon in the era of its knight, the martyr Karim Khalaf, who reinforced its identity. Biblical record and archaeological evidence indicate that the Jews conquered and began to settle Palestine, known in the Bible as the land of Canaan,post, during the thirteenth century before the Christian era (BCE). Moses had given the Israelites political organization and led them out of Egypt, bringing them to the country’s borders. Thereafter, under Joshua, they initiated a prolonged military campaign in which they gradually took control of the territory and made it their home. By the twelfth century BCE, the period of Judges, the Jews were firmly established in ancient Palestine, and the area of their control included substantial tracts of territory on both sides of the Jordan River.

Unger* I. INTRODUCTION A surprising amount of artistic activity takes place in the embryonic, war- torn state of Palestine. Despite the turbulent political atmosphere, there has been virtually no official governmental censorship of the arts. However, the volatile political and social context and unofficial governmental censorship have encouraged most Palestinian artists to practice self-censorship in the areas of religion, sex, and politics. This Article begins with an examination of the different ideological frameworks through which the Palestinian Authority (P.A.) and the Islamic Resistance Movement (hereinafter Hamas) view the arts. Next is a detailed discussion of the current status of the arts in Palestine. This Article concludes by predicting how the Palestinian constitution and the promulgation of more laws will shape the future of the Palestinian arts. II. TWO COMPETING IDEOLOGIES The two major political components in Palestine today are the Palestinian Authority government, lead by Arafat and his Fatah political party, and the Islamic Fundamentalists, dominated by Hamas. 1 These two political groups have very different views on the arts.
