    The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release March 1990 COSTA-GAVRAS: A RETROSPECTIVE April 13 - 24, 1990 A complete retrospective of twelve feature films by Costa-Gavras, the Greek-born French filmmaker, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on April 13, 1990. Both thought provoking and entertaining, Costa-Gavras's suspenseful mysteries deal with compelling social issues and are often based on actual political incidents. His stories involve the motivations and misuses of power and often explore the concept of trust in personal and public relationships. His films frequently star such popular actors as Fanny Ardant, Jill Clayburgh, Jessica Lange, Jack Lemmon, Yves Montand (who stars in six of the films), Simone Signoret, Sissy Spacek, and Debra Winger. Opening with Z (1969), one of his best-known works, COSTA GAVRAS: A RETROSPECTIVE continues through April 24. New prints of Costa-Gavras's early French films have been made available for this retrospective. These include his first film, The Sleeping Car Murders (1965), a thriller about the hunt for a murderer on an overnight train; the American premiere of the original version of One Man Too Many/Shock Troops (1967), a story of resistance fighters who free a group of political prisoners from a Nazi jail; and Family Business (1986), a drama about the transformation of a family crime ring into the local affiliate of an international syndicate.     The Development of the British Conspiracy Thriller 1980-1990 Paul S. Lynch This thesis is submitted to the University of Hertfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. January 2017 Abstract This thesis adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to explore the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in British cinema during the 1980s. There is considerable academic interest in the Hollywood conspiracy cycle that emerged in America during the 1970s. Films such as The Parallax View (Pakula, 1975) and All the President’s Men (Pakula, 1976) are indicative of the genre, and sought to reflect public anxieties about perceived government misdeeds and misconduct within the security services. In Europe during the same period, directors Costa-Gavras and Francesco Rosi were exploring similar themes of state corruption and conspiracy in films such as State of Siege (1972) and Illustrious Corpses (1976). This thesis provides a comprehensive account of how a similar conspiracy cycle emerged in Britain in the following decade. We will examine the ways in which British film-makers used the conspiracy form to reflect public concerns about issues of defence and national security, and questioned the measures adopted by the British government and the intelligence community to combat Soviet subversion during the last decade of the Cold War. Unlike other research exploring espionage in British film and television, this research is concerned exclusively with the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in mainstream cinema. This has been achieved using three case studies: Defence of the Realm (Drury, 1986), The Whistle Blower (Langton, 1987) and The Fourth Protocol (MacKenzie, 1987).

    feature films made in Luxembourg 2013-2015 MADE IN EUROPE The young, vibrant and vivacious film sector in Luxembourg is especially proud this year. The Oscar for “Mr Hublot” (best short animation) is the first Oscar ever for a Luxembourg production. This international acclaim is an acknowledgment of the know- how, competence and excellence of the entire Luxembourg production sector and is a boost for the industry. This majority Luxembourg co-production, produced by Luxembourg based Zeilt Productions, and directed by Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares, was backed through the direct financial support mechanism provided by Film Fund Luxembourg, an official body under the supervision of the minister responsible for Communications and Culture. Luxembourg is a forerunner when it comes to co-productions. All of the 20 feature films (live action and animation) and documentaries that are annually produced in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg are mainly co-productions between a national producer and one or more international partner(s). With the support of local creative and technical talent, the 3 productions initiated, developed and created in the Grand-Duchy - as highlighted in this brochure - are all Films from the heart of Europe.
