GRAVES uakers are remembered generally for their historical efforts to end slavery, reform prisons, improve the plight of the mentally ill, and Q other humanitarian goals. They are also recognized for their contri butions to science, the industrial revolution, reform of banking and insis tence on ethical business practices. However, they are not noted for their contributions to the arts, which are in fact minimal. Wtthregard to the the atre, early Quakers would probably be numbered among Jonas Barish's "legions of hard-shelled, mole-eyed fanatics" who occasionally have filled the ranks of theatre-bashers (The Anti-theatrical Prejudice, 2) .

Customer Reviews. Write a review. And an even better suggestion Published by Thriftbooks. Walsh's "Philip II" is one of the finest of pro-catholic histories, and actually perhaps the best researched book in history, I mean in comparing it to the other stuff out there on the subject. The man was clearly led by Heaven on a mission to Set the Record Straight. It has to be read to be believed, what a collosaul [? More interesting and with more complex plot lines than most novels, it digs deep to penetrate what actually went on. It actually can hardly be recommended enough. Although my review here is probably a bit over the top, that is how I feel. Shipwreck of Civilization Published by Thriftbooks. In reviewing this, the fourth volume of Dr. Carroll's monumental history of Christendom, we feel compelled to invoke Belloc's apt description of the Reformation epic, as the "shipwreck of civilization". For indeed, that is what it was. Sadly, we see emerging in Dr. Carroll's meticulously documented account yet more evidence of his desire to shield the reader from a bit of the truth of the matter. While there is a great deal of wonderful revelation contained herein, that which is excluded is even more dispositive of the shipwreck. We wonder even more than in previous volumes why Dr. Carroll is so selective in his presentation.

Christian values permeated all aspects of human activity in sixteenth century England; the basic truths of Christianity were largely unquestioned, and these would underlie the views on life and death, whether consciously formulated or not, of most of those who made up Shakespeare's first audiences. I explore the ways in which Shakespeare responded to, and significantly departed from, his sources in four major tragedies with Christian (or non-pagan) backgrounds: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello andMacbeth. In the first chapter, I discuss the prevailing religious tensions in England as Shakespeare was growing up, and the theological instruction he is likely to have received. I examine the interaction of these theological ideas with the cultural exploration of ideas taking place in the English Renaissance.

UNIVERSITY MICROFILMS Sir, in Cambria are we born, and gentlemen: Further to boast were neither true nor modest, Unless I add we are honest. Belarius in Cymbeline. Act V, sc. v. PREFACE In 1927 Lloyd George became the recognized leader of the Liberal party with the stated aim of making it over into a viable third party. Time and again he averred that the Liberal mission was to hold the balance— as had Parnell's Irish Nationalists— between the two major parties in Parlia ment. Thus viewed in these terms the Liberal revival of the late 1920's must be accounted a success for at no time did the Liberals expect to supplant the Labour party as the party of the left. The subtitle reads: "A Study in Political Communi cation " because communications theory provided the starting point for this study. But communications theory is not im posed in any arbitrary fashion, for Lloyd George and his fol lowers were obsessed with exploiting modern methods of commu nications.

Introduction The Varieties of Liturgical Performance For centuries Christians have explained their repeated enactment of the Holy Eucharist as an attempt to remain faithful to Jesus’ words at the Last Supper: “Do this in remembrance of me.”1 Justin Martyr (c. 100 ‒ c. 165), whose First Apology and Dialogue with Trypho are two of the oldest explana- tions of the Christian meal, traces its celebration to these very words: “The apostles, in their memoirs which are called gospels, have handed down that they were commanded to this: Jesus took bread, and, after giving thanks, said ‘Do this in remembrance of me; this is my body.” And again, “[T]he offering of fine flour ...was a type of the bread of the eucharist which our Lord Jesus Christ commanded us to offer in memory of the Passion He en- dured.”2 This “argument” would be repeated over and over again by apolo- gists and theologians East and West and would survive into the modern pe- riod in the debate between Protestants and Catholics over the place of the Eucharist in the life of the church.
