In 2007 Abdoulaye Wade was reelected president in an election generally viewed as free and fair despite sporadic incidents of violence and intimidation. In 2007 the ruling Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) won the majority of seats in National Assembly elections that were boycotted by the leading opposition parties. During the March 2009 local elections (municipal, regional, and rural communities), a multiparty opposition coalition scored significant victories, especially in the country's major cities. International observers characterized the March 2009 elections as generally free and transparent. Security forces reported to civilian authorities. Major human rights problems included the following: inhuman and degrading treatment of detainees and prisoners, including reports of physical abuse and torture; overcrowded prisons; questionable investigative detention and long pretrial detention; lack of an independent judiciary; limits on freedoms of speech, press, and assembly; corruption and impunity; rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment of and discrimination against women; female genital mutilation (FGM); child abuse; child marriage; infanticide; trafficking in persons; and child labor. Rebels associated with the Movement of Democratic Forces of the Casamance (MFDC) killed civilians and military personnel, committed robberies, fought with the army, and harassed local populations while fighting each other. -

AKOSOMBO BROCHURE INTRODUCTION It was called Nkonson-konson-bo (a chain of rock). That was the name given to the little known settlement by its inhabitants, who in 1733, had settled at the foot of the gorge formed by the Akwapim and Togo mountain ranges. Nkonson- konson-bo soon became strategically a frontline safe haven of the militant Akwamus, who in retreat after two hundred years of conquest and imperial rule, had sought refuge in the safety provided by the hills and the river Volta It is said that the Chief of the Akwamus made his nephew headman of the community to keep a lookout for their enemies from the north of the river. For nearly two centuries the Akwamus enjoyed the protection, security and peace of the gorge, cultivating the rich fertile land and harvesting the abundance of fish from the river Volta, without any intrusion so to speak, until Sir Albert Kitson, an Australian geologist, who first discovered bauxite in Ghana in 1915, noted Nkonson-konson-bo, as a future hydro-electric dam site. This name latter became corrupted to Akosombo. With this remarkable discovery began the gradual but steady transformation of Akosombo into pre-eminence. World leaders, industrialists, engineers, surveyors and international celebrities from across the globe began to take express interest in what was seen as one of the biggest projects on the African continent. Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah made the implementation of the Volta River Project the cornerstone of his vision for the development and prosperity of the newly independent nation. -

NGO ASSESSMENT IN TOGO: Institutional and Technical Capability Assessement of Non-Governmental Organizations Active in the Health and Population Sector in Togo prepared by: Franklin Baer Eileen McGinn Arthur Lagacd in collaboration with Samuela Bell October 1993 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Phase II NGO Assessment team expresses its sincere thanks to OAR/Togo for its warm hospitality and assistance in conducting this study. A special thanks to Samuela Bell for her Phase I inventory of NGOs which was certainly the richest resource of information for the Phase II team. Thanks also to Sara Clark, John Grant, Karen Wilkens and Barbara McKinney with whom the team worked most closely. The team also acknowledges the devoted hard work of the many NGOs - large or small, national or international, urban or rural - who are working tirelessly throughout Togo to improve the health and well being of the Togolese population. Our review of the extant and extirpated mammals of Togo includes 178 species, with Chiroptera (52 species) and KEY WORDS Rodentia (47 species) being the most speciose groups. -
