Grade Level: 10-12 Background Hydroelectric Power has long been touted as a clean alternative source of energy. It produces roughly 70% of the power in the Pacific Northwest. However, hydroelectric is not without its costs. Salmon runs on the major river systems, such as the Columbia River, and on minor rivers, such as the Elwha River in Olympic National Park, have suffered greatly in recent decades, and some of these salmon species are becoming listed as endangered or threatened species. Today, large dams on the Columbia River, owned by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) provide the majority of power for the Pacific Northwest. Yet hundreds of small, privately owned dams are scattered around the region. These are in various states of disrepair, and often only provide enough power to fuel a small community or one or two factories. However, these dams do as much or more damage to the salmon runs in their area than the large dams (BPA dams have extensive programs to help the fish successfully navigate the dams). This lesson is derived from real testimony given to Congress regarding two of these small dams in the pristine Olympic National Park in Washington.

A stellar line up of prominent newsmakers presented the awards to a distinguished group of broadcast journalists following a black-tie dinner at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Noted broadcast journalist Charles Osgood, of CBS Radio and Television, acted as the Master of Ceremonies at the event. "The coveted Emmy was awarded to programs and program segments, as well as to individuals, for outstanding achievement in News and Documentary programming,” said Bill Small, Vice Chairman for News and Documentaries of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. “The recipients were chosen by blue ribbon panels composed of broadcast industry professionals.     RD 23 ANNUAL NEWS & DOCUMENTARY EMMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS IMMEDIATE RELEASE Revised: 8/16/02 THE 23RD ANNUAL NEWS AND DOCUMENTARY EMMY AWARD NOMINEES ANNOUNCED BY THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES New York, July 22, 2002 -- The 23rd Annual News and Documentary Emmy Award nominees were announced today by Peter O. Price, President of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). "We received a record number of entries this year for the News and Documentary Emmy Awards,” said Price. “Entries totaled 1654, up from last year’s 1450.” The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast during the 2001 calendar year. “These entries and nominations reflect the extraordinary year of television news coverage that 2001 proved to be,” said Bill Small, Vice Chairman for News and Documentaries. “This year’s awards will pay tribute to the role of broadcast journalists in covering 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan, among the most significant news stories in modern history. It will also reflect that same excellence in the coverage of news in other key areas affecting our culture including the AIDS crisis as a world health problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” This year, the presentation of the News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be part of a series of events titled “9/11 to 9/11: A Tribute to News Professionals.” The tribute will begin on Monday, September 9, at the Essex House with a noontime lunch for newsmakers and leading television journalists and executives. Later that day, a symposium attended by journalists, television executives, newsmakers and students will be held at Fordham University to study the role of television in covering the current world crisis.
